Sony, we need unlimited online save storage

I took a look at my PS4 saves and PS3 saves.... It's amazing how HUGE the PS4 save files are in comparison. With exceptions, most of my PS3 games are in the kilobytes. With PS4 the smallest ones are 10MB+. That's crazy. Within a year of the PS4, without playing any of the major culprits like LBP3 and Driveclub, I'm at 950 MB or something close to that. Makes the cloud save useless after a year.

Tell 'em we need unlimited storage like Xbl

Just as an fyi,

When I flag threads like this it basically means an email is sent to a few people Community Managers at SCEA and a fairly highly placed person at SCEE linking the thread discussion to them as well as a synopsis of the issue/discussion in the case of massive threads.

While the MVP program falls under SCEA's jurisdiction, I do keep my eyes open for European related issues too.

This combined with the fact that you can't keep a game save on your console unless you have it installed, yes, 1GB is fucking stupid. My girlfriend only has a couple of games and she's already used like 400GB.

Outside the free* games you get PSN+ and the PSN is a joke. It's down several times a month, games like COD don't even use dedicated servers, we have debacles like Driveclub still not working, PSN gets DDOS attacks that bring the PSN to its knees, still no automatically trophy syncing and shit like this cloud storage having a petty limit.

* = Not really free.

COD does use dedicated servers, in fact out of the four online games I play, the only one that doesn't is a remake of a PS3 game. Bad netcode is bad netcode though.......

Whoa, is that true? If so that's ridiculous. I wish I wish I could plug plug in a portable drive then. 500GB sucks if you lose your saves :-/

Wait a second. I can't keep the save file on my system if I uninstall the game? Who thought that that was a good decision, especially when they ship it with a relatively small hard drive.

The group in charge of the OS design seriously need to take a good look at their own design. I'm shocked at the amount of "flaws", for lack of a better word, in the design.

Annoyingly because of this I now have a massive list of failed upload messages in the uploads tab, which was continuing to grow every time the console went into rest mode.

I've not been able to upload videos to YouTube for a week now getting a generic "cannot upload" message (no actual error). It seems the PS4 upload list has some limit that it had reached because of these failed save uploads. Once I manually deleted these my YouTube uploads started to work again...

Are you sure? The data manager clearly shows game install data and save data as separate items.

Games saves stay on the console even if the game is deleted, I just looked. Unless you mean something else.

You have to manually sync?

If the PS4 is set as your primary system it will sync automatically.

I need 2gb more for my ps4 this year if i continue gaming at the same rate as i did during the first year .
1gb was alright with PS3 & Vita, but goddamn i need 5gb exclusively for PS4. i think this is doable considering this is a service tied to PS+

Wait what? Are you saying I lost all my saved games from games I uninstalled for space??????

Edit: phew, he was wrong. That kind of misinformation is bullshit, dude.

- littlebigplanet 3 is 500MB on its own - that's half your storage gone

Increase yes.

Unlimited no.

2-5 GB would be a start.

The likely reality is that is the same thing. What is the average tie ratio for normal consumers? I bet a ton of them don't use much of that 1GB. If you offered everyone 'unlimited' storage, I bet the actual amount needed wouldn't be much more than if you actually reserved 1Gb for every PS+ subscriber.
And again, this isn't space we can just waste with our own personal uploads. It is only for save games, and developers and Sony are the only ones responsible for those file sizes. And our need for space only increases if we are giving Sony more money for games. Entirely proportional and incremental

You have 1GB per console though. As a PS3/4/Vita owner I have 3GB in total.

is this true? a few months back I started deleting saves I didn't care for on the cloud because I was approaching the 1gb limit but I should have 3 then lol

If not unlimited, at a bare minimum each additional game you play should increase your maximum allowance. Maybe something like 500MB for every retail game and 200MB for every PSN release would be sufficient. Ideally it'd just be unlimited but if that wasn't possible there should definitely be concessions made for accounts that have a lot of games on them.

Yeah, 1GB isn't enough. Systems can and do crap out, saves can get corrupted, and I can't always remember to back up my saves onto an external drive.

If Sony are actually allocating 1GB per user then they're doing it wrong. Presumably they are already allocating it dynamically as it is needed, only using as much storage as required (up to the cap per user)? They just need to remove that cap. The only way i'm going to use 'too much' storage is if I buy hundreds of PS4 games. I think Sony should be ok with that.
That's actually a really good point. I'm going to tweet your post to Shu and see if we get a response. I think everyone else should do the same.

That's just flat-out stupid game design by LBP3

Having said that, is cloud-saves mandatory on PS4? Can you just totally turn it off and save everything to your system's HD?
All saves are saved locally to the hard drive and then uploaded during downtime to the cloud for backup purposes. You can completely turn off the feature if you want to but it also disables automatic downloads for updates and preloads.

It's true, but it isn't pooled together. You get 1GB for PS3, 1GB for PS4, and 1GB for PSV. If you max out the space for one console you can't dip into free space meant for another console.

Yep. Recently ran into this problem as well when I imported some Singstar songs.

Did some serious cleaning out of the Online Storage though so I should be good for now. I just wish I could select what games to auto upload like the PS3 and Vita.

7.9 million PS+ subscriptions * 1GB per console (PS3/PS4/Vita) = 22.6 Petabytes of storage

Valve offers up to 1 GB of space in Steamcloud per game if the developer/publisher decides to use it and neither Steam users or publishers/developers have to pay anything since Steam and Steamworks features are free.

If Sony is changing users for this feature it should be a lot more then 1 GB per console.

Working with Amazon & Azure for business I know that cloud storage is relatively cheap as fuuuuuck. Also keep in mind that not all PS+ subscriptions use anywhere close to 1GB.

One thing Sony should do however is not have such obscene save file sizes though. No reason why every single game is 10MB minimum.

My point is that Sony needs 22.6 PB of storage theoretically, while in reality they have way less than that.

So yeah, I agree that it should be "unlimited", just like Flickr/Yahoo provides "1TB" (almost unlimited) of cloud storage. ;)

A friend of mine had told me that they're sparse files, aka they're not really 10MB.

It still sounds stupid and confusing though.

Pre-allocaing the max-possible-size for your save files would avoid fragmentation, which would lead to quicker loads and saves. Also, it avoids the user running out of space and being unable to save mid-game.

Steam has cloud storage for each game. Torchlight 2 offers like almost 1gig (only 3 megs used here) while other games like Skullgirls has like 10 megs (only 10KB used).

All for FREE.

Yeah, but the question is: How is Steam storing those? It's all well and good to offer "unlimited" cloud storage to people if you make them think you don't have set limits.
