Sooo.. that "rape joke" during the Killer Instinct demo [Microsoft apologizes]

It's obvious that the Mad Katz representative was implying he was using rape as an innuendo for the beating the girl is receiving in the game?

Can we get a poll on this?

It's obvious to some people what the phrase implies. I have no idea what was in his head when he said it, but the phrase is used to describe rape quite commonly. There's even a meme about it, look it up. I think there are even examples posted in this thread.

That's exactly what is implied when people go "see? see? rape culture!"

They think that this sort of banter is normalising rape and that it makes people go out and rape innocent women after playing video games.

Oh my god.

To me it came off as a rape joke, naturally it could've been a simple "just take the beating" but the way he said it made it sound rapey.

There was really no need for it either way.

I just realized that my dentist was making jokes about how he is going to rape me when they put me under. "Just relax and let it happen, it will all be over soon". I feel oppressed.

i can guarantee your dentist has literally never said "just relax and let it happen" as a response to you saying "i don't like this"

I see somebody is failing the Rorschach Test. I see awkward trash talk, you see rape. Says more about your mindset then maybe some of you "I see rape" types are willing to admit.

i thought the most awkward part is when their conversation ended with her saying, "no, i dont like this"

I dont see the rest as a rape joke...little stretch there.

She was the only woman on the stage, she was clearly new or inexperienced, he was clearly experienced, he was winning significantly and the tone of his voice took satisfaction in his dominance.

Was your dentist the same way?

Oh how weird, here's a link to a "Rape Sloth" meme created two months ago that just happens to use the language "Shh, just let it happen". How odd? What a crazy coincidence that this apparently normal phrase was used in a meme about rape. It's almost as if that language has always been associated with rape and this meme and the joke was drawing upon that cultural context.

Now that I think about it, my mom said this to me when I was younger too. I forget exactly what the context was...but...wow doesn't matter. Sick. I now see why I'm so fucked up.

I didn't think it was a rape joke. Definitely a poor choice of words and extremely awkward (but that whole segment was awkward) but I don't think it was a rape joke.

It's not a rape joke because there is no sexual implication. At best it's referencing assault.
Regardless, some people do think it is. You can agree or disagree.

Here's my question: What now?

Wow, you're really onto something here. Obviously the people who construed this as a rape joke must be the real rapists; it's the only possible explanation.

I'm glad to see that the overwhelming consensus in this thread is that there was no rape joke. Common sense mostly prevailing. This whole debate is a goddamn mockery of reason.

And "Let it happen." It's great that that's never been said to you, or that you're not even aware that it could be used in the context of rape. It really is, but don't doubt the people who say it is and say they're just making things up when they're obviously not.

Your interpretation of an innocuous phrase is your own problem. I can be offended by anything; doesn't mean anyone else has to take it seriously.

Yeah no one...except for quite a few people here and other sites and on twitter complaining.

The overwhelming consensus in this thread is that there was no joke, and the people complaining are being ridiculous. If people choose to be offended, that's on them.

lots of people thought it was a rape reference and are legit offended. get over it.

And they are ridiculous for being so.

Part of autism is understanding everything literally.

People who don't understand innuendo and metaphors are going to be incapable of understanding why this is a rape joke with the word being literally mentioned.

Guys, I would helpfully suggest reading this wikipedia article before making a reply in this thread to the effect of "he was referring to their fight therefore it could only be referencing that because phrases can never possibly have more than one clear meaning."

Innuendo and double entendre have to be intentional. What you guys are doing is basically the equivalent of a "that's what she said", except instead it's "That's what the rapist said." You're ascribing sexual (in this case perversely sexual) meaning to a phrase where there was no intention that the phrase be interpreted in that manner.

The guy who said this should literally be offended by you guys trying to twist his words around.

The people with common sense should move on, while the people who lack common sense can stew in their outrage. And we should not acknowledge them.

Wow I'm all for hating on MS but are you seriously going to spin this as a rape joke? Sometimes I truly get sick of sensationalist assholes who take something and completely flip it around into a huge controversy/scandal

Pro-tip: Just because you see everything in your surroundings as something related to rape it doesn't make it so.

hi why does it bother you that folks thought it was a rape reference (this is actually an open question to any of you who have complained about how people are just trying to stir up controversy or whatever)

And if he did, then it's most assuredly a rape joke.

it's creepy enough that medical professionals are trained specifically not to talk like that so.

Really? So everyone who does not agree with this and thinks that it is horse shit is suffering from some part of the autism spectrum is that it?

you guys are stupid. this thread is an example of why this world sucks. you're making everyone look bad. please go and die or something. thanks.

Just because you have never heard the phrase before does not mean there is not a history associated with it. A simple google search of the phrase shows both violence and rape are strongly related to "it will all be over soon"

I would just like to add something else-

Just because you aren't offended by something, doesn't mean it's not offensive. Take some time to try and understand why people might think that that guy saying that to a woman in a professional setting might be the wrong thing to do.

there are a lot of phrases you can make look any way you want to. that doesn't mean you should do this.

Then the thread title would be "so... the guy telling the girl to shut up and take a beating in the MS presentation..."

.
Overwhelming huh? You act as if five posters are complaining while the majority of the thread is people who didn't see it. Tons of people in this thread noticed it.

But hey keep shifting those goal posts!

I'm stunned not by how many people didn't think it was a rape joke initially but by how many of you still don't think it was a rape joke after the suggestion has been put forth.

Nothing.
Both sides will yell at each other, with both sides accusing the other of being either too sensitive or not sensitive enough. Some people will get banned, and everyone will forget this incident ever occurred, with no one changing their stance (whatever that may be).

Everything can be offensive to some one. its redundant.

Yes. Hero or Traitor.

I wish both sides would just bend a little. It wasn't directly offensive, but could be seen as such and therefore was dumb.
