Soul Sacrifice (Vita) Demo impressions

Loving it so far. The voice acting for the intro was shaky but gets much better in the scenes between battles. Haven't tried online yet, going to try that out tomorrow.

For a build I'm going to try and go Divine with blood spells.

So like SMT, depending on what side of things you're on...you have access to certain spells? Does your appearance slightly change, or is that based on character customization?

Eh, not really enjoying this, played the first three missions, just seems like a short fetch quest game, and unlike MonHun, the monsters you need to find are right in front of you, no big sprawling map.

I'll have to see how it does review wise, but personally, if you gave this to me today and said it's the final copy, of the first 3 missions and story plot, I'd prolly go 5ish.

I'll play it some more and see if it sticks, but after all that hype I feel a bit let down.

Just took out Harpy. Really liking this game a lot so far. I have read the posts that you don't need to grind, but I already want to.

Also, Sortiara hit me with something RIGHT when I had charged up an attack as Harpy was on the ground. It was all timed perfectly. Stupid AI lol

Ha, Sortiara kept nailing me on my first mission. I was like, hmm, how does this all work then, I think I'll run up to that creature and smack it with my sword and everytime I got close she'd blast me.

Played the demo and didn't enjoy it one bit. Glad I didn't preorder.

And here I thought I was the only one!

Not really seeing it either. It's all next-gen browns and greys, combat is janky and doesn't pack a punch, you can't even dash cancel (I tried it a couple of times, though), and the music is so bland it's like it isn't even there. It's not my cup of tea at all.

Dash canceling in a hunting action game? Definitely not the right game for you. I'd say that other than boss fights and loot, committing to action is one of the most common traits for the genre. You mistime something, you pay for it.

I guess certain monsters have elemental weaknesses as well.

This isnt going to play like a stylish action game. Its a hunting action game with a strong focus on magic and story.

EDIT: Is there ad-hoc as well as online?

Took down pumpkin and harpy in multi. So much fun, got sacrificed for the final shot on harpy too :). Cerberus beat the crap out of my party, but the weren't group healing at all.

I didn't want to draw comparisons but, you can actually dash cancel in Phantasy Star Online 2. And I found the combat very similar to that. The combat isn't my biggest issue with it, though. The whole presentation is not pleasing to me at all, I couldn't stand Demon's/Dark Souls for the same reason. I need happy cheery rainbow colors and blue blue skies in my games, LOL.

Excellent, excellent demo. Fast paced, good looking, fluid controls, content packed and tells you everything you need to know about the game.

Wow, so the game felt really easy until I got to the last fight (or what I assume to be the last fight before the multi opens up). I hate that homing shock move and I can't believe how far the boss's ice attack travels when it's charged up.

You mean
Sortiara
? I thought that was the easiest boss. I got through it in well under 2 minutes by spamming that blood cannon and ice sword spell.

Yeah that'll get you down. Thats why I think im gonna focus on saving souls rather than just sacrificing everything. There are some pretty bright and clean areas though, at least looking at other shots of the game.

EDIT: Reading Cerberus' lore, that thing is getting sacrificed though. Wtf guardsman.

I don't want to go too far with this, but I feel like this game is definitely a "game", in the sense that it's uncompromising about who it is and what it's doing, and it won't suit everyone's taste, but it's not trying to.

Played it a little today, VA isn't bad, but it could have been better. I already understand the basics of the game, but I still don't understand what's the cost of using spells (apart from the ones that take HP). On the other hand, the graphics are really good, and so is the art direction.

The cost is nothing. Every spell has a set number of charges (uses), which you can see by going to the upgrade menu. If you exhaust those charges it can break, and then you'll have to spend tears to repair it. You can refill those charges by sacrificing monsters or objects around the level, but they're refilled for free when you finish the stage (provided it isn't broken).

Demo was enjoyable. Loved the atmosphere and VA. Controls were responsive. I struggled at the last part since I tried to save instead of sacrifice.

I feel like this is one of those rare games that I can play however I want when it comes to leveling, and still do alright. So far, so good with just magic damage.

I agree. I also died on one of the early ones and chose to sacrifice myself. The AI killed the creature and the level ended. Thought that was different. I'm still a little lost on how the setup of magic/attack works. Is the only way to reuse an attack is to find that attack again? I'm kind of curious as to what happens if all your attacks run out.

Really wanted to like this game, and still might. But my initial impressions of the demo have me thinking this game just might not be "for me".

I wish it had more of an exploration feel to it, but it really does feel a lot like an arena brawler in which you just select the creature your fighting from a menu and then engage it in battle.

Have not tried out the online yet, think I am now at the point that becomes an option. Will play some more, but I don't know if this will be a day one pick up for me.

Downloading this right now, can't wait to see what it's like. Since I have no games that I want coming out until summer I think I can easily pick up this game when it comes out. Let's just hope its good.

When your attacks run out you have to "refill" them using the tears from the book. But if you do not completely exhaust them during battle, they just fill back up after each battle.

Really like it so far, still learning the ropes though. I can't help but be totally evil and sacrifice everything. Combat is fun as hell.

Got it... just sacrificed
the harpy
, are the effects of Black Rites permanent? (defense halved, in this case) Also, how do I use picked up objects to refill the charge count?

Do you hate the slow combat of Monster Hunter? The combat in this game is really fast.

That and no camera lock-on. I don't like Monster Hunter's style of arena-grinding in comparison to PSO/PSU (which granted is slower than Monster Hunter in terms of combat).

I only used it for that one mission. Lock into the boss and go crazy with those two spells. I didn't lose a single point of health either. :P

I didn't even have the ice sword spell yet. I still don't but I can fuse it. I wonder how I missed that one?

I beat that boss though. Now I think I might grind a few missions and fuse some new spells.
