Soul Sacrifice (Vita) Demo impressions

Played the first 3 missions. Haven't got the first fucking idea what I'm doing. I'm going to read around a bit and crack on again later. It's not my kind of game at all, but I want to give it a fair shake.

Shame really. At least I have 4 friends buying it. One who's buying the system just for this. And then theres GAF :)
Yep. I hope the game finds its place.

I've been getting more and more niche over the years, so I'm just happy that I have local friends who share my tastes.

So I'm loving SS, so far. I actually really enjoy the voices, music and such. If it wasn't pointed out by other people I probably would never have known the names were changed and stuff - at first it was a big deal for me but now I don't really care so much, the main thing is the game is awesome and fun.

The sub native res ruined everything for me, makes graphics look very bad. And is every quest in just one arena/zone? So far it has been and it makes the game feel very repetitive and boring. I was so hype for this game. SS is nothing like MH.

An action game doesnt need to be like MH to be a good game. Geez, what is up with some people here.

haha, me neither. But dammit, I'm gonna sink a few hours in because I have a feeling that it might just be one of those games that once it clicks I'll be playing it for 200 hours. Of course it might not be.

Liking the demo so far. The voice of Librom really takes me out of the game, both annoying and out of place, very much like the narrator's voice in Big Sky Infinity.

Well everywhere compares it to MH. If they came in blindly expecting a MH clone theyre gonna find one aspect of the game. Stupid internet comparisons.

Although i'd say its took the best part of MH (the boss battles) and got rid of the dull/tedious shit.

Add to that a much cooler setting IMO.

MH is a very, very, very good game series, but I feel these two games are completely different as far as 3D action games go. The "dull/tedious" shit is actually something that makes MH stand above most other games, which I really love it for.

But that doesnt mean SS is a bad game. Its a fantastic game with its own spin on the formula.

one person's tediousness is another's treasure. I got so many wft glances from my wife while mapping dungeons in etrian odyssey 4. I love that Wizardry/D&D shit.

Would you recommend the 3ds version of MH or the wii U for someone whose never played it?

Are there any videos of the english demo up?
Watched some Japenese one but not having a clue what anything was didn't really help the experience

Worst thing about Soul Sacrifice: Lack of Liam O'Brien voice acting the journal/book. I would have shat my pants if his voice would have started up.

(For all your Grimoire Weiss fans)

The demo though is very engaging, bloody and designed well. Hard to find time for this against Gaucamelee!! (Game of the Year I kid you not kind Sirs and Ladies!).

VITA is so f'n strong.

I'm kinda surprised at how much I'm not enjoying the demo here. My biggest problem that I'm finding is I'm put off by the weird division between how fast the game is and how much the game wants to slow you down with all of the HOLD (insert button here) TO SOMETHING SOMETHING; it makes feel really clumsy, especially compared to other fast-paced hunting action titles like God Eater, which really focuses on very snappy controls and actions. It's almost like this game is trying to split the difference between GE and MonHun, and doesn't quite get there.

I have to disagree. The hold attacks that slow you down are a very specific risk/reward. You should only be using those when openings are presented that make sense, else you're going to get rocked trying to do it. But if your timing is on, you do tons of damage. It's like nailing a Rathian in the face with a three hit hammer strike. Sometimes you get the downward pound, other times you eat a fireball or tail flip to the face. And to be fair, the attacks that are solely hold do not seem to decrease mobility, while ones that do require a stop have both a quick attack and the hold attack.

The problem is that combat isn't the only thing that has that whole HOLD THIS TO THAT! philosophy; picking up stuff, grabbing buffs, saving/sacrificing, it's all a hold, and I just can't get down with that at all.

If Merlin's name has changed to "Magusar", then I'm afraid to see what they'll end up calling Excalibur.

Gonna dive into the online today. It's so cool to be able to finally play this game in English with friends.

Luckily the art style and designs are immaculate.

So anyone think this is a system seller? I love the game but its got that hardcore niche about it that i think won't click with the larger public sadly.

Yes. It sold the system for me.

But it definitely is an acquired taste, much like the Souls games.

Relating to the mechanics of the game, should I focus all of my stats into either health or attack or keep it balanced?

I got the "Soldiers Ember" drop. But I'm nit sure what the conditions were. I would like to boost it :(
If it's listed as the last drop for a mission, that means you need to get a rank of Divine Sorcerer to obtain it. That's what I've observed, at least.

Edit: Oh wait, that might have been one of the break rewards. You can check which parts are breakable by using Mind's Eye (down button).

I don't know what's up with Sony changing the names. There's no way someone has a trademark on names like "Merlin" for video games.

Actually I have a question:

You have the ability to press down on the direction pad and see your foes health and weak points. On the Jack-O-Lantern fight you see the weak points being his left and right arms and front of the head.

My female companion in the story mission destroyed the head portion, but when I tried to use L BUTTON to target the Jack-O with the log on functionality, is there a way to then target other other parts of the body by just pressing a directional key? Or is it just the situation like in Monster Hunter where if you used ranged attacks, you better have great aim or if you are melee focused, you wait for an opening when you either stagger the foe or the foe does an attack that runs it out of stamina and leaves it exposed while on the ground?

I am leaning it will probably be the latter, but was wonder if there was a more enhanced sort of lock on feature.

Secondary question, so in my example above, what have people used on the Jack-O-Lantern to break all three weak points of interest????

Really enjoying the demo, only partially through it, but finding it very fun.

Monster designs are amazing, animation great stages look great, music is fantastic, English voices are not so hot. Game look fantastic to me.

People complaining about the short missions hopefully realize that they are essentially playing a tutorial, do you really believe 4 people playing would be confined to such small areas? Can't wait to play more.

Probably because they thought Westerners would think that the King Arthur stuff would make the game seem cliché because they've heard of it a million times in other video games and media, while Japanese players wouldn't.

I dunno, the Harpy is totally turning me off from the game. It took me 40 minutes and about 15 revives from allies until I got it dead.

Get gud?

The best way (that I have found) to break all weak points is to use the ice shield to block its rolling attacks, which will make it bounce off into a stunned state for a short period, then attack the weak points when its on the ground. You could probably use some ranged attacks that lock onto enemies but I haven't tried it.

But that still all falls under taking the opportune times to do it. It's still part of the risk/reward. Do you levy the same complaint about drinking a potion, getting in a tail carve, or sharpening in Monster Hunter? Because at G-Rank, the monsters have so much more mobility (I'm looking at you, Black Diablos) that you could say the same thing there. I understand what you're saying, I just don't find it to be problematic.

This demo is fun and interesting. I don't have a problem with the graphics either. The only issue I have is that I suck at it, lol. I need to practice some more. I definitely want to get this game one day after playing the demo.

Was anyone else going around in circles not knowing what to do at the beginning of the game when you're inside that cage?.

When you press down on the d-pad and those colours come up on your enemies, what do they stand for?. I know it was mentioned in the game, but I forgot :(

I'm going through the manual anyway so it should be in there.

Kudos to Sony for giving us a decent sized demo.

Before you posted I was just thinking of the Ice Shield to block the rolling.

I can already envision this game to be excellent where it comes to playing battles over and over again testing out spells and seeing what works the best in terms of dmg/element/defense and just either putting it all to memory or paper.

This game needs an in-game notepad that you can update strategies against each enemy separately.

Like if you went to the Enemy Database page, selected say the RAT Enemy to review and you could click and drag your most effect spells over to say 3 open circle slots (very similar to your spell equip page) and save that information. And then when you accept a mission you can use that information and preset your build in the armory quicker. Man that could be sweet.

it's the risk vs reward factor, for example, do you try to sacrifice/save the downed player in the center of the battle? or do you wait and lure the boss out, same thing in other games

actually reminds me of GW2 when reviving a downed player in the middle of the battle

No, because I don't have to use the Vita's crappy shoulder buttons to do any of that.

I'm sorry, but I had to get that out. I hate those things so much.

I totally get the intent, and I've certainly done enough Diablos farming to know when it's safe to do anything, but I just don't find it to gel well for me at all in this particular game.

You can always use the touchscreen to save/sacrifice, although I wouldn't recommend it.

Doesn't the enemy database at least tell you what elements they are weak to?

Also, it does seem to encourage replaying missions by offering more spells if you get a high rank.

MH would benefit from using hold mechanics because it's too easy to accidentally and irrevocably start some super long actions like setting a pit trap when you thought you were re-sheathing a weapon.

If it does, I was not aware of it, which means I need to delve deeper into it and see what is already provided. Maybe at lunch time :)

So you're mad because of the mechanics, because of the Vita's shoulders or because it's not monster hunter?

Demo is awesome. Can't wait to play the full game. The game online is fun. Just wish the characters felt they had a little more weight to them.
