[Source] Mod Megathread

Goldeneye Source: Beta 4 is out and it's awesome. I'd make a thread, but I usually fail at that.

Teaser is up for Radiator 1-3 (Much Madness). It looks really interesting.

I liked Polaris but never finished Handle with Care. I couldn't figure out how to progress in that one.
Ooh I'm looking forward to this.

Handle with Care basically ended with some really tricky box manoeuvres. I didn't mind it, but the creator was hoping for a better mechanic.

Been playing a little and it's been pretty fun. Tried to get my friends to play but they don't enjoy deathmatch type Mods too much.

I've been waiting for some more news of this. I didn't really get any sense of what it was about from the video though.
I should have posted this from the update:

MUCH MADNESS: You're trying to escape a sinking submarine after stabbing your husband in the back repeatedly -- to make matters worse, Emily Dickinson's ghost keeps reciting those blasted poems of hers... Maybe drowning to death isn't so bad? (Issue 3, March / April 2010)

Interesting new upcoming mod called Gravinull, anybody else see the new trailer? Looks frenetic as all hell. I hope they eventually include a more structured teamplay mode (think dodgeball, with teams starting on either sides).
Looks fun. The best part is you only use the mouse. I love games that keep things simple yet have tons of room to build skill.

Well, that sounds a bit odd. Makes me more interested.

wait what? You mean you aren't supposed to destroy all the crates and end with
accepting the break up with you partner before walking through a "set" of the memories?

That's one ending. The harder to get ending
requires you to store all of the crates into the called for spot (grid location), which basically results in you "suppressing" all of the bad memories and saving the relationship.

I truly cannot believe how wonderful this looks. There are so many small details that make the island more believable and interesting. I can't wait to walk around there myself. I just can't get over that this is the source engine. It'll be interesting to see how he'll handle the caves.

I'm going to hold off my Dear Esther playthrough until this release. The start was waaay to slow and monotinous for my likings, and I didnt really like how the writing and voice work began.

But I'll give it a second whirl when its updated.

A bit tardy, but I have added Orion to the coming soon section, with a link to the latest beta.

I saw this mentioned elsewhere:

Operation Vault Assault
(Multiplayer mod set in an alternate history scenario where WWII took place in the modern era, with Germany, Russia, and America as factions)

Mainly a teaser video up at the moment:

Hoping for lots of Nazis, large levels, and Cold War-era weaponry.

Tales from the Galactopticon is also looking interesting. Probably will add that one soon because it appears very promising.

If you like SP mappacks, Planetphillip is now making some from collections of contest entries. The PP Hunterville competition is ending May 3rd, so a mod with all the entries will be released around that time.

Radiator 3 has been continually hit with Valve Robert Yang time. The originally hoped for release window was December/January.

It's going to be awesome :)

More romance confirmed.
Agreed on both counts.

I get the feeling that one NPC character has appeared in all of the episodes so far, makes things a little bit more interesting from that perspective.

Anyone following Opposing Force 2's development? They released a screenshot of an intriguing city area today.

Could use work, but definitely potential methinks!

Man, I can't wait for this one.

Not exactly sure what the blog is talkin about. :lol Mind explaining whatcha mean by "big" Botolf?
Big in scope and size, it would appear Much Madness is a lot larger/longer than the first two episodes. Neither 1 or 2 would really come close to the limits he's brushing up against now.

I cannot believe how incredible that looks. I was wondering why there hasn't been an update in so long. I think I can see why. It doesn't even look like the source engine. It demolishes what Valve did with the tunnels in Episode 2.

If Valve can do similar work in Episode Three or whatever, the comments about the Source engine getting old kind of don't matter anymore.

Valve will probably hire him as the environmental artist or something now.

I have played the original Dear Esther and i cannot wait to play this re-imagining.

The level of detail over the original is astounding.

I cannot believe it is still in source.

Watch the video if you haven't already.

The Dear Esther remake is quite clearly a love letter to the mod, and what can be accomplished by visual artists in videogames when they're given complete freedom of time and control of their work.

Its just the one guy, if I recall correctly. The former DICE employee, spending his own time and talent towards a single product. Because its just him, in his own time, for something he loves, he can customise every texture, shader, and polygon to look absolutely exactly how he wants. No spamming of reused assets, no stretching of hideous textures. No time constraints, deadlines, or expectations beyond what he himself wants to achieve.

This kind of polish is extrodinarly hard to accomplish in a normal development cycle, simply due to the amount of people involved, the budget given, and the time required.

I agree with you, and it's also why I think that developers releasing SDKs is so important. We would never, ever see anything like Dear Esther as a retail release. I mean, I could see an indie developer making something similar, but they probably would not have access to an engine like source. People can develop mods in their own time to create something as beautiful as Dear Esther, or they can develop games with brand new and unique concepts with no risk or cost to the modder (well, outside of time).

No doubt in my mind, this is going to be the best-looking Source mod/game by a huuuuuge margin. Downright insane.
Even better than...PORTAL 2?!

Dun dun dun. *goes to watch video*

*edit* That guy worked on Mirror's Edge? Wow, didn't know that.

*edit after watching video* How in the WORLD did he do that with the flowing water. Valve should get that feature from him at least...

As far as Valve games go, Episode Three will probably end up looking better than P2. Portal's aesthetic has generally been simpler than the Half-Life universe's.

I'm not sure I know what you mean about the water. Do you mean the caustic effect on the cave walls? I'm fairly sure that's an animated texture effect.
