South Park Season 12 - Park Harder

The HIV+ scene was hilarious. The rest was pretty average by South Park standards. I'll watch it again a little later to see if I enjoy it more a second time. Alot of times South Park gets better with multiple viewings.

why is Cartman wearing that cap and...

:lol haha so true...anyhoo decent episode not "rofl" material but decent though
oh yeah, and for some reason it seemed like a bit of deja-vu to me since years ago in the early 90's i'd actually say to people "yeah i'm hiv positive" at many things

Not bad, I guess. They already did an AIDS joke with the "Hey everybody, AIDS is finally funny" one from a while back. I guess this episode has it's own merits, though. Lots of shock, that's for sure.

"I'm HIV positive" argument and Kyle slapping Cartman at the end was gold. I dunno, didn't really laugh at this one too much. Was probably too tired from playing Smash. Will have to watch again.

Aw, isn't that cute.

Look at you, pretending to be better than everyone else.

I just wanna pinch your cheek.

It wasnt making fun of people with aids, but making people aware that it is still a serious problem.

They have their episodes which are there just for laughs, but also have their episodes that make you thing about what is going on in the world.

If that's what he meant, that people who laugh at those jokes are retarded because it's "wrong", then he's an idiot.

It doesn't even matter if South Park was trying to make you think about the world. Fact is, it's okay to make AIDS jokes and okay to laugh at them. You don't want to see offensive humor? Don't watch fucking South Park.

So tired of the politically correct bullshit.

That was one of the least funny episodes I've ever seen. The premise was dumb, all the AIDS jokes were recycled, and the whole Kyle/Cartman feud is getting played out waaaaay too much. I'll wait for next week, hopefully it gets better.

Yeah, people were laughing at the realization that AIDS is still a problem :lol.

This episode was simply shit in every way, shape and form and you probably have to be a post season 8 Simpsons fan to laugh at the weak premise in the first place.

I felt so uncomfortable in my chair seeing how they handled AIDS, AIDS, AIDS! Oh so shocking! Hey, listen Matt and Trey: AIDS is not the big great taboo, neither has it been forgotten so your little season opener was completely pointless.
Make another doped out towel episode. Make fun of fucking "I'm not a muslim!" muslim Hussein Obama. That's the stuff I can laugh about.

that would just be plain not funny as he isnt muslim, just plays into the sterotype of him ignorant people have.

Plus, aids is some what forgotten and i feel they did a great job in showing that. They were not making fun of people with aids and were not making fun of aids either.

That would be typical South Park, though, and way better than this humor-less first episode. Make a political one with Obama and make it subtle. Just have him running around in his traditional muslim garment all the time and have him pray in the background a couple of times or something like that.
I would laugh.

yeah but you are playing on a non-exsistance matter. I could understand if he was muslim and you never saw him in the traditional garments and stuff. He isnt muslim and only ignorant people who dont wat to see a 'muslim' president argue it. It just would be lame in my opinion.

it wasn't hilarious, but I guess you missed or did not appreciate the commentary (which I thought was moderately brilliant). The extreme expense of medication for HIV patients, the struggle to get insurance companies to cover those expenses...

Well, the thing is, nobody except for himself nows what he believes in. He would be stupid to declare to be muslim trying to run for president in the US so there's one argument. Plus it would be a great joke on all these "He's not a muslim! Not that there's anything wrong with it, but he's not a muslim!" kind of people that run around everywhere.

Could we get off the subject of what that rotting corpse's beliefs are and back onto the subject of how hilarious AIDS is?

This episode didn't have a whole lot of jokes, which probably threw some people off, but the absurdity of the whole situation(easily the thing SP does best - situations, not jokes) and the new twist it added to the Cartman/Kyle dynamic meant I couldn't stop laughing through the second two-thirds or so. I don't think they made a big deal about the fact they were making fun of AIDS - for them it's just something else to create humour with.

They'll probably do an Obama episode sometime soon, but I can't see them doing anything as obvious as the whole muslim thing - they're too clever for that.

Naah, they made fun of Richard Dawkins, they are not that clever.

Why are you so negative? You should really try to be more HIV+.

OH MY GOD that joke is over ten years old and NOT FUNNY. I remember when I was in fourth or fifth grade (early 90s) they would say that kind of stuff:

"How do you spell AIDS?"

"A-I-D-S."

"Are you positive?"

"Yes"

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

etc etc.

They had him falling in love with a tranny while Cartman vanished to the future to defend the world from menacing sea otters. I don't think 'wit' or 'clever satire' was in the cards for that episode.

True, but the humour was that it was done over and over again, and at the very point where Kyle pointed out how completely unfunny that joke is, it upped the anty because cartman KEPT doing it, even though Kyle was taking the completely serious approach to it.

I guess some people on this forum just don't understand comedy.

When Cartman FIRST said "I'm HIV positive!" I kinda chuckled and figured it was a one-off thing. Once he started using it as a catch phrase (Are you havin a laugh?), and then Kyle's subsequent explosion, it just upped the laughs to a new level.

By itself the joke is stupid, yes, but when you layer it in the context of Cartman's character, how this, the same kid who tried to erradicate the jews, gets a disease that that threatens him (remember the ginger kid episode?), he'll do anything in his power to draw attention to himself and make things all about him, as good as it can be, even though he's previously hated on said group.

Oh, and the Philidelphia hat made me burst out laughing, such a subtle reference that most people might not even recognize.

Yeah, because that's exactly how it was used in the show.

It was funny BECAUSE it was a bad joke, yet he kept doing it.

Some of you just make me laugh.

So wait, Cartman has something bad happen to him, Kyle laughs at it, Cartman tries to inflict harm on Kyle. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

I agree, but if past seasons have taught us anything, it's that the second episode will be gold.

Granted, but name one cartoon/animated show that has never ever fallen subject a formula? IT's been done on South park before, but it's a formula that works for them.

edit: omg rite - I'm glad you get the humour too... and you have a desmond avatar, <3 I can't imagine why people dont find this episode funny; is the world really turning into that of which we saw in Idiocracy? Where only stupid fart/sex jokes get laughs?

Wow! Didn't expect that at all from the episode..:lol
Pretty funny. When Cartman goes in Kyle's room I was totally baffled.

Wait, so you're suggesting sex/fart jokes = low brow, but AIDS jokes = high brow? Sure, whatever you want to believe.

Secondly when entire episodes revolve ONLY around Cartman and Kyle (like this one) it takes away from the original formula of success; the four boys doing things together.

:lol Butters kiss.

I kinda miss Stan and Kenny. For a while it's been just Kyle and Cartman. :/ When Stan's in it, it's usually about his dad (who rocks, but still

I really enjoyed "The List." It was old school, over-the-top-yet-cute, South Park.

don't put words into my mouth, I never said that AIDS jokes were highbrow.

Listen, dick and fart jokes (I absoloutely hated the terrence and phillip ep, and whenever they're shown I cringe because those episodes are terrible), are presented very immaturely, There's no possible way to make a fart joke on a level higher than some dude farting at a serious moment, there's no range in that type of humour.

The beauty of south park, and last night's episode, is that while yes, AIDS is an absoloutely terrible subject to cover, and an even worse subject to make fun of, they were sucessful at making you laugh at AIDS, you knew in your head it was completely wrong, but the absurdity and complete over-the-top presentation of the subject matter was what let them stay 'on the line' between offensive and risqué. That has been the goal of south park in recent seasons. You mustn't forget that these kids are supposed to be 8-9 years old, and that's the mindset you must go into the episode with. The complete naieve'ness (not even a word, but I digress) of the characters, ESPECIALLY Cartman, is what made it work.

When the show first started, it was on the level of dick and fart jokes, the formula you so seem to be attached to (four kids doing stuff together) - while that ideal isn't completely wrong, and while yes I agree, it's much more fun when everyone is involved, south park has evolved so much over the last twelve seasons, something that other shows (See: Simpsons, Family guy, etc) can't do, that yes, they'll lose some fans along the way.

The way I look at it is, south park came out when I was in grade school, It was like grade 7 or 8 when it first came on the air. At that time, the dick and fart jokes were hilarious, but as I aged, so did the show; but it always evolved with my tastes, the show was staying completely relevant to my generation, and I think it is still so.

References like the philidelphia hat would be lost on anyone who'd never seen the movie, which is most everyone under the age of 18 these days. South Park is very much for people who are in their twenties, thirties, etc.

It's a matter of perception, and I suppose a matter of how long you've been watching the show, seeing where they came from (anal probe in Cartman's ass, lots of fart jokes), to where they are now (political satire, breaking rules, attacking religion and current events), the show has dramatically changed.

Nothing is safe on south park, and that's part of the show's charm, because you know they'll always make you do something, or think in a way, that you'd never have considered previously... such as laughing your ass off at AIDS.

edit: but to answer your question directly: Aids itself is not high brow, but they were able to layer on so much comedy, that it appeared to be. As I stated at the top, dick and fart jokes aren't that dynamic, which I think is why they've steered away from them in the recent years.

Way too much analysis going on from both sides for a fairly average episode.

It was meh episode not because I was offended or didn't get the jokes but mainly because it was just a meh episode.

I'm not claiming this to be the best south park ever, but I'm missing where it was terrible and unfunny.. I laughed a fair amount, and enjoyed it - I'll agree with other posters that it may not have been the best season opener (It reminds me of one of those episodes where they write it like a month in advance, as opposed to the week prior), but it was still a solid episode that made me smile.

I wasn't so much strictly aiming that post at you even though it came right after yours and yours was the longest post ;)

Obviously opinions vary. It wasn't the worse South Park and it wasn't close to the best which places it in the average category for me. Which isn't bad considering its South Park. It was sort of a message episode with a fairly weak or muddled message. When they are sharp they can be really sharp. And when they aren't even trying for a message they can be brilliant also. That one was oddly in the middle which is why it was average for me.

Giard said:

What I don't understand is...like Cartman said, he's snuck into Kyle's room MULTIPLE times over the years. When is Kyle going to learn that he needs to "Cartman-proof" his windows? :lol

I thought it was a fairly meh episode. Had some nice jokes, but not up to the show's usual standards.

They've had episodes that have concentrated on specific characters since very early in the existence of the show. Whining about it now won't stop what they started back in season 3 or so.
