McKenzie gets flack for his acting? Hell I thought he owned his role as Ryan in the OC as well. And hes done a great job the entire series IMO.

I take it you are a cop. I have always wondered, what is the most realistic cop show that you have seen? I'm sure its different city by city, but still. Is Southland close?
Yes I'm a cop, have been for about 10 years. This is far and away the most realistic cop show I've ever seen. The calls they go to, how they handle those calls, the dialogue, and the dark humor/sarcasm are so spot on that I wouldn't be surprised if one or more of the writers were cops or had relatives that were cops.

About the only term they use that I've personally never heard is "boot" for rookie officers. But I'd guess that's a regional term or a military term so that might be why I'm not familiar with it.

For all the changes in production this show has endured, Southland still managed to pull off one of the best seasons in TV I've ever had the pleasure of viewing.

Oh, and McKenzie has been a strong actor his entire career! He's shaken off the stigma that goes along with starring in a teen drama series.

Anyway, it's high time TNT put its full weight behind this show. Flagship network series. We need more seasons!

I was cringing throughout the rooftop fight scene. It all felt so damn real, every blow had an impact. Amazing.

I don't know about the other cops on GAF, but this scene, like Nate's death where he's swarmed, was so effectively done that it gave me chills ala "holy shit, I hope that never happens to me."

This show is the only active drama I've followed over the past two years. It just doesn't let up. The finale was great.

From the little moments...of that six-year old kid doing the "finger-gun" motion to John, and John's reaction....to the ENTIRE last fifteen minutes from the rooftop fight on.

I was a fan of the OC, and McKenzie has only proven his chops on this show.

Also, from season 1, I didn't think much of Sammy, but I'll be damned if he hasn't become the most compelling, badass character on the show. And him and Sherman teaming up in uniform for Season 4? YES PLEASE.

The rooftop scene was intense. As someone who used to train MMA, I thought the fighting choreography could have used a *touch* more work but it basically destroyed all other primetime fight scenes ever so I'm happy :)

As someone who has trained martial arts, including MMA, for more than half his life, and works on the job, that rooftop scene was perfect from a dramatic and "realistic" point of view. The "rough"ness of the choreography isn't a "flaw", it's what makes it "real". When your actual life is on the line, after chasing a subject across a couple blocks, up several stories' worth of ladders, and leaping a building chasm, no one is going to hit a picture perfect arm bar or RNC.

That scence was simply....real. From my view.

I would agree. (even as a filthy Fed who hasn't worked uniform).

While I think the Wire is unquestionably a "better" show, and has a wider scope, I haven't seen a show that seems to better capture the attitude of a frontline officer or detective as Southland. Whether the cynicism, the dark humour, or the dogged determination and dedication to the job, nothing seems to match this show.

Yea definitely good to hear how authentic this show is. I think I did read an article where they said they worked with several cops to ensure the authenticity. Can never trust those kinds of statements though. Damn TNT, support this show! It is so much better than The Closer.

Glad to hear there's going to be a 4th series. Now if More4 would just hurry up and show the 3rd here in the UK, everything would be peachy. I barely watch any TV these days but Southland just hooked me from the start.

Big congrats to the cast and crew. Oh yeah, and those darn writers!

I finally watched the last episode.

Thats how seasons/series should end. No cliffhangers.

Im glad we're getting another season, excellent show. I highly recommend it.

It got renewed for another season? Fuck yes.

I've been watching this show since day 1 and I can't stop watching. Too bad my friends can't see its appeal.

LTTP but I've now caught up with all 3 seasons (just started watching 2 months ago). Great show can't wait until Season 4.

How'd you watch it? I'm thinking about a rewatch.

Dammit, I dont know when the new season starts and I thought for a second it had. :(

edit: felt like rereading the last page or so of comments and its pretty cool remembering how good the previous seasons were. I think I might rewatch it..

So Southland.......is this show worth getting into?

How would it compare to another L.A. show like The Shield.

Is it similar to the recent movie End of Watch (which I loved)?

Haven't seen that movie but the show is not really like The Shield. It's more "realistic". In a way it looks like a fictional version of the show Cops. It's mostly handheld cameras, the image is always very rough and a lot of POV running and stuff like that.

In the end it is one fucking amazing show. One of the best cop show I've seen.

After all the talks here I finally watched End of Watch tonight.

The film has weird pacing which makes it a bit boring from time to time but holy shit those last 30min or so...DAAAMMNNNN.

Is it weird that watching Southland makes me homesick for LA? I love this show and for some reason only watching this show makes me want to go back.

I thought the movie paled in comparison to Southland.

Oh, well I disagree. It's a bit different since End of Watch doesn't just deal with some local gangs, but it was thoroughly entertaining, ( seemingly)realistic and intense as shit.

I think it's definitely worth a watch for any fan of Southland though.
