(Speculation) Is it possible Nintendo isn't developing a 3DS successor?

Handheld is Nintendo's most important business, so it would be impossible for them to abandon it.

So while the future Nintendo handheld console won't be a beast selling 100+ million consoles again. A steady and stable market seems to be in its future if they play their cards right. I mean, even a future console selling 30-40 million generation after generation could be a huge profit center.
It's more likely that the NX handheld will lose half the customers that bought the 3DS. They're competing directly with superior products, and the market is going to shrink until it hits the floor. The only question is where that floor is.

Didn't Nintendo ditch the Game Boy brand due to have something more gender-neutral (sexism & whatnot)?

Probably. I always thought it was because the DS line was supposed to just be the "third pillar" but ended up being more popular than the GBA so they just focused on the DS line.

Hearing rumors/leaks only of the console, might be because they release the console this year and the handheld at a later date. Therefore actual info of the console is out there but not of the handheld.

Of course they´re developing a handheld. No leaks needed for that.

Nintendo already said we're getting a new console and handheld. The rumors are likely just focusing on the console due to that one being the more interesting platform in terms of specs and such.

Nintendo exiting the handheld market would make history. And you're not the only one who has both a fantastic imagination and thread-making privileges. Here it is, the OP for the next NX thread:

Can you imagine in a few months a jet plane could be heading east towards Los Angeles. It dives down for a landing on Figueroa, sparks flying as the wings scrape against the traffic in downtown. Tatsumi Kimishima personally piloting it to a stop right in front of the LACC. He pops open the window hatch, hops out of the cockpit in a ninja suit and the cop tells him hey, you double parked. Without breaking a stride Kimishima tosses him a shuriken and says "Please Understand". Then he kicks down the automatic doors of the convention center and through the roar of the fanboys and a pyrotechnical display that sets several booths on fire, the CEO strides up to the stairs in south lobby, puts on another pair of glasses, then whips them off again and says, "Hey, we're going full mobile!"

Hey, it could happen.

Tune in June to see if Nintendo completely drops the NX. After all, there's no way in hell they're not making a handheld device.

there's no way they'll stop making handhelds, especially when their home turf, japan, they're the only thing that still sells in the traditional games market.

they'll drop out of consoles before they drop handhelds. maybe they'll make a phone or something crazy but they'll never stop making handhelds.

Yep. Looking at 3DS' lifetime sales trends, I see no reason to believe that the dedicated handheld market won't continue to shrink.

All recent rumors about NX seem to negate the idea of a console/handheld hybrid.

For that matter, everything we've heard so far has been decidedly home console oriented, Hardware power, x86 architecture etc. In fact, There have been zero credible rumors about a new handheld gaming platform from Nintendo.

That's because you don't need to rely on rumors:

Satoru Iwata said:
While we are only going to be able to start this with the next system, it will become important for us to accurately take advantage of what we have done with the Wii U architecture. It of course does not mean that we are going to use exactly the same architecture as Wii U, but we are going to create a system that can absorb the Wii U architecture adequately. When this happens, home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems.

If the handheld is going to work together with the console, I'd like to think it make more sense to start with the console first, then engineer a handheld that can cooperate with whatever console scheme they choose.

Will definitely be a handheld, and I'd wager it will work as a controller for home console with all buttons, unlike vita.

I can confirm it will not be called Nintendo Extra. Doesn't sound like a Nintednoism. Maybe LL or L. Maybe something weird like Nextra.
