Yep

Just rewatched this tonight on bluray and it still holds up great.

Also I think what alot of the Marvel superhero movies are missing are the random save scenes and stopping criminals which the Spider-Man series has plenty of which make you feel good.

I watched it with my brother and mom in the cinema and I was blown away.Haven't seen it in years so I can't say if it aged well or not,but it was amazing back then.

For all their nitpicks, it and Spidey 2 are wonderful raining afternoon films

Bless you Raimi

I can't stand the cast aside from Willem Defoe and JKS, so I find it unwatchable now despite loving it on release.

IMO every single recast from TAS was an upgrade (even though Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone are technically different characters).

really? putting aside people's hate for tobey for some reason you really think dane dehaan's harry was better than franco (who was basically in james dean mode at that time), or rosemarry harris aunt may?

even sally field thinks nothing of her time in amazing spiderman lol.

fuck the first two raimi movies are so good. been rewatching spectacular spiderman lately and i love how many similarities it shares with the raimi films.

i like andrew garfield a lot, and consider him a better actor than maguire but tobey's the best. so likeable. unequivocally love these movies.

Actually I forgot that DeHaan was harry, I was only thinking of the first when I posted. I thought Sally Field and Martin Sheen were far more likeable than their 2002 counterparts.

A cast upgrade can't save the 'paint-by-numbers' origin story and script-by-committee.

I never said it did!

Watched it last year after not seeing it since I was a kid. Awful movie...just green goblin...gah...feel like I'm watching power rangers when he's on screen. It's like he didn't know what to do with his hands.

Question: why did some people hate Dunst in this movie so much?

Personally I can't stand her in anything, she just always seems so cold and full of herself, makes her really unlikeable.

She's like a female Jude Law to me nowadays, I can't watch anything that either of them are in.

missing out breh. she was incredible in fargo. hilarious performance.

I haven't gotten to Fargo yet, I'm willing to update my opinion if she's really as good as I have heard. She was just so irritating in Spiderman 2&3.................

I hear the criticism but I don't care - loved her and Tobey in them.

As an emotional catharsis, her running through the park in her wedding dress to Peter coupled with her speech about facing life's troubles together topped with 'Go Get em Tiger'...for all the granduer of other Marvel and superhero movies in the last twenty years, there has not been a more emotionally satsifying ending to this type of film for me.

OTT, sentimental, cloying - all of it, but it's so apt. Perfect fit.

The Raimi movies are SUPER mopey and melodramatic. The Tobey/Dunst romance scenes play out like they're in slow motion; long, heavy-lidded dialogue sequences.

And I absolutely love that about them - there's a sort of rhythm to their scenes, with that gorgeous Elfman score just beneath them. I'm thinking of their talk by the trash in the backyard in particular right now. It's awkward and sad and perfect.

But I can see how that wouldn't connect with people. You have to really see yourself in Tobey's Peter to understand it, and I always have - he's the sort of person I simultaneously wish that I was and am afraid that I am. Which is 1000% what Spider-Man is about.

Absolutely. They are unlike most films in the genre nowadays. Out of context and compared to other romances they may seem clunky and a bit odd, but as you say they have a rhythmic quality to them in context of their cinematic world that elevates them to an almost timeless enduring quality to them if you are caught by their hooks.

Whilst they do piss people off a lot more, in 15 years time I think people will still be drawn to Raimis first two Spidey films for a rewatch to get lost in their pure escapism and romantic qualities - warts and all.

Equally, I can't honestly see Elfmans Spidey theme being topped. Still get legit chills sometimes watching the intro to Spidey 2 with the theme playing. Beautiful

I always thought it was a good movie too. Seeing Spidey swing around the city was great.
Sexy Dunst did help its watchability, I suppose.

I prefer it to 2 because of Defoe's fearless scenery chewing and because it has a much better ending (or you might say: it actually has an ending).

2's great as well though. Hope to see a Spidey movie on the level of those two in my lifetime. MCU don't let me down.

Yup. Someone posted the 'really that good' video in the other thread and it pointed out some great stuff. Need to rewatch the first two films.

This movie has fond memories for me. First PG-13 movie I went to by myself. Asked my grandma if I could, she lived about a mile away from the multiplex, she said yes and later that day I walked to my first movie all alone. Along the way by the gas station, I found a $20 bill, which I used at the theater for snacks and candy. Even though I was 5 mins late and missed the opening of the movie, I arrived to see Peter running after the bus that left him and continued to love the whole thing. Good times, good times.

To be fair, they're not really those kinds of heroes. Spidey is street level, so yeah he's stopping back-alley muggings and such. Daredevil S2 would be ripe for stuff like that. But outside of Antman, the MCU heroes are all dealing with global-level threats, working for or with the government, etc.

That's the interesting contrast, Avengers dealing with the big stuff and the street-level heroes having to deal with the petty crimes and mobs and such that still exists on a local level

Macho Man was the best part - it was the only real stunt work in the film.

Also, that Macy Grey part...and those awful Sony special effects and Toby ...sigh... just awful as Spidey - insufferable, even.

Oh, god the 'Merica stuff too....from a Japanese film company - shameless.

It's aging worse than Batman '89

Man, love this movie. That scene in the end where it's revealed to Mary Jane that Peter is Spider-Man.... So god damn well done.

The final fight so personal, raw and brutal and great. Spidey 2 is better obviously, but the final fight in this one is severely underrated.

It was my first memorable movie disappointment. I remember being so hyped, but just found it lame and cheesy. 2 was much better and is the only one of Raimi's trilogy I can stand.
