Spike VGAs Thread: [Update: FINALLY a funny joke descends upon the show post #4807]

Outside of a few cancelled Rare prototypes and games and 'long run' stuff like Remedy's new project and Kingdoms, what could they possibly have in development besides another Halo game?
Well I'm treating this like MS TGS 2010. Thought the would have nothing lineup then some timed-exclusive things but well they sure did suprise me.

Just wish they'd start announcing a decent line-up. I don't care about Kinect at all, just like I don't care about Playstation Move. If we're comparing 'core' line-ups, then PS3 has a ton and 360 has 1 or 2... Gears of War 3 and possibly Kingdoms. That's it, that's just piss poor. If they don't at least reveal one other game at the VGAs, I'll be worried.

I think we would have heard something by now.

Which IGN Microsoft rumor?
Rumor: Gears of War Coming to Kinect
Though Kinect has been a big success for Microsoft since debuting on November 4, many hardcore gamers have turned up their noses to the innovative camera controller because they think it's just an enabler for minigame collections, casual fare, and rhythm stuff. If you go by the launch library, well, they have a point. But a reliable source tells IGN that's all about to change.

According to our tip, Microsoft is using the Spike TV Video Games Awards (VGAs) to introduce some big action games, including new titles for the Kinect. The headliner is Gears of War for Kinect, coming straight from Epic Games. Now, we cannot clarify whether or not this is an all-new Gears of War for Kinect or if it's an existing Gears of War game, retro-fitted for the camera controller. But it definitely clicks with recent rumblings that Microsoft wants to get in front of the conventional wisdom that the Kinect is only a toy for casual gamers and family.

We reached out to Microsoft for comment. Microsoft returned our request for additional clarification with the traditional "we can't comment on rumor or speculation." IGN has also put in a request for comment from Epic Games, but has not heard back yet. If Epic Games has a statement on this story, we will certainly pass it along.

But what do you think? Would you welcome a Gears of War for the Kinect? And if you have plans to resist the Kinect, does the promise of Gears for the camera controller at all change your mind?
Rumour says new normal games and Kinect titles.

Rumor: Mass Effect 3 to be revealed at the VGAs, will include multiplayer
Joystiq has learned from a trusted source that BioWare's enigmatic teaser from last month represents the first glimpse of Mass Effect 3. As many have guessed, the third installment looks to feature something brand new to the series: multiplayer. We're currently unable to confirm that the multiplayer component will be part of the game's unveiling at the upcoming Spike Video Game Awards.

The Spike VGAs will air this Saturday night, preceded by a good deal of internet speculation brought on by the above teaser image. As spotted by one of our commenters, Arth Vader, the gun above looks exactly like the M-29 Incisor Sniper Rifle from Mass Effect 2. BioWare has also blasted out curious QR codes via its Twitter feed, all of which indirectly reference things from the Mass Effect universe, including the Vostok system and the surface temperature of the planet Aequitas.

Kotaku's "Mass Effect FPS spin-off" Vs. Joystiq's "Mass Effect 3 with multiplayer"

FIGHT

I love that phrase.

I spent a year working in a game that was in 'development hell'... =/

If that's the fight Joystiq wins.

EA: Games without an online component (social networking or multi, etc) are finished

Mass Effect FPS spin-off = GAF meltdown

so I hope Kotaku win the fight.

Worried about what?

Well, the spin-off rumour was that it was a multiplayer focused shooter ;).

Mass Effect 3 it is.

Well, that's fast for ME3 reveal.

But whatever. If I won't like what I see, I'll finish second DLC walkthroughs on my both characters and continue the third mainline walkthrough with my third character but I'll be savouring it. Because I still believe that it's too hard to dedicate development time and resources to both SP and MP. Something will be gimped - sidequests or the main story. I hope it's coop, because this would make sense.

Couldn't it be some other RPG? By someone other than BioWare?

NO.

Anything? New IPs, older stuff that we haven't seen on the 360 yet or sequels to earlier 360 games (Blue Dragon? Lost Odyssey? Halo Wars? Even - brace yourself - Too Human). It doesn't have to be something developed in-house, Microsoft loves collaborating with independents.
I'll play, Blue Dragon is now tied to Namco Bandai and at the VGA's? really?, Sakaguchi is hooked up with Nintendo for The Last Story. Halo Wars? Ensemble shut down, remnants are working on Ages of Empires Online. Too Human? Dyack got some support from the Canadian government($4 million) to work on X-Men for Activision.

What independents could've worked with MS on new games that they would rather make multiplatform? The rumor mill this year was:
Perfect Dark 2 for holiday 2011 - Rare has nothing, they even cancelled some Kinect projects :lol
PGR5 - They were looking for a developer, so they haven't started working on it yet
Remedy - Project started after Alan Wake DLC was done, no way it'll hit in 2011
Lionhead - just released a game, chop chop go to work on fable 4 now lads
Turn10 - Forza 4 already confirmed and on the way
Halo HD - Yeah seems likely, but possibly more fitting as a big E3 surprise.

As far as MS goes I'm coming up emtpy. Unless they magically build a new studio under the radar and hired a bunch of industry veterans to work on AAA games. As far as independent studios go, most of them are either bought by Zenimax/Activision/EA, bankrupt or shut down.

What about Firebird Studios, what do you know about them?

What are the odds ME3 will actually feature actual ship control and ship to ship combat? 0?

Reason I ask is I'm playing Dark Star One and even though it's kind of bad it's also kind of awesome.

Lakitu said:

They could potentially be a 'helper' studio. SCE has a studio in Foster City that does that. A CV from a Firebird employee potentially suggested that he was helping develop a game for some other studio/team.

You know what would be great? If I0 dropped in and revealed Hitman 5 /end dreams :lol

I think after the VGA trailers for Batman,Uncharted 2,Mass Effect 3 and possibly Saints Row 3 i'll put myself on media blackout for those games. I know I want them so why would I need to hear more about them. It was the best thing I ever did when I did it for Metal Gear Solid 4.

Announcement trailer and maybe something else is all I'll be watching for Mass Effect 3. BioWare are unforgivingly bad at spoiling their own games in trailers and promotional material. They just dont give a fuck.

Used to believe that game companys would not spoil there own games in trailers...boy was I wrong. Launch Trailers are a no no for me.

Ah that, naw. Though Jaffe says the exclusive character is Blinx. :lol

Stolen from the UC3 thread this is what is up for 2011 for Sony(well who knows if they all fall in 2011, but likley most)

Even taking out the move/3rd party stuff this why MS needs to start lining up their 2011 content besides simply Gears. They really need some decent stuff before Fall 11 to fill the gaps. They had 2 first party and 2 third party exclusives up until Reach this year for comparison.

Looking at this month's NPD, MS doesn't need a damn thing.

Fucking Peace Walker logo has to mean something.

I wonder if they'd do it for both the HD consoles.
Couldn't it just be that Peace Walker is nominated for best handheld and they're showing it because of that?

Naw can't have 9-11 month core gap. They had a good mix of a lot things this holiday. I don't think they would allow that for the portfolio based on years passed, but they have to show us something sometime if they have anything before fall.

Moving Gears of War 3 to the fall was purely a business decision, and it was probably because Microsoft genuinely doesn't have any big offerings until then.

All of the big titles Microsoft had released this year were announced well in advance. Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, Mass Effect 2, etc. were all known entities well before December of 2009.

It's very unlikely that Microsoft would somehow magically pull a few core titles out of nowhere for release in just a few short months. They haven't played that strategy ever. Only Nintendo has done something like that.

There's also the issue of Microsoft not having enough studio support to suggest they have anything on the way in just a few months time.

Those were just examples, I don't really expect them to announce Blue Dragon or Too Human sequels at VGAs. Halo Wars is a possibility, however (it doesn't have to be developed by Robot), and Lost Odyssey isn't completely out of the question either, although it's not very likely.

By the way, has it been confirmed that Blue Dragon is a Mistwalker property? I remember that Sakaguchi asked Shane Kim for permission to make Blue Dragon 2 (half-jokingly, though) so I thought that Microsoft just allowed Blue Dragon DS games, kind of like they let Rare develop for Nintendo handhelds.

Who knows? Did you expect a Crytek collaboration? I sure didn't, especially knowing how fond they are of PS3. Did you expect all those TGS deals? I sure didn't, except for Suda 51 who has expressed desire to develop for Xbox 360 ages ago. Does it even have to be some established developer? Of course not, I haven't even heard of the likes of BigPark, Grounding and Ruffian before they were brought up in connection to Microsoft. God knows plenty of talented developers have been losing their jobs recently...

By the way, in addition to the already mentioned feelplus, Frontier is another candidate, they're already working on more Kinect games.

And Lionhead has been working on multiple projects all this time, I fully expect a game using Milo and Kate tech next year.

It's ridiculous, but I guess we're cursed with having to go through this shit every year...

Not really saying that myself, but more of the fact yea I do think they have something, but gonna have to show the cards sometime.

No one is seriously thinking that MS won't release any other exclusives besides Gears 3. I just want to know what else could they have for 2011.

Multiplatform games are usually better and sell better on the 360 anyways, MS can count on them to carry the load until the Fall for Gears and Forza 4. DS2, Portal 2, Bulletstorm, LA Noire, RAGE, etc are all going to do better on 360, they might even possibly sell 360s. Really, I stand by what I said, MS doesn't need to do a damn thing, and I believe they'll still come out with some core games, but will have RARE and MGS work on some more casual/Kinect titles.

Well personally I'm not in the "Kinect titles don't count" state of mind. Kinect proved that it just works and I happen to own one.

So I don't disregard those 5 Kinect JP games announced recently. If Gears Kinect is announced this week-end it's bonus to me. I can understand the frustration for others though but some statements are just ridiculous.

I also know MS said there are non-Kinect titles planned so they'll have to reveal them one day or another.
