Does Advance Wars> Fire Emblem count? Or is that just two similar games in the same niche genre made by the same exact developer?

Oh who am I kidding, Fire Emblem is much better anyways.

Also, Starcraft>WarCraft

Can't say I agree with OP's example :D

Anyway

Children of Nile > Pharaoh
ARMA 2 > Operation Flashpoint
Alpha Centauri > Civilization 2
Lands of Lore > Eye of Beholder 2
Risen > Gothic 1-3
Jane's Combat Simulations: F-15 > F-15 Strike Eagle III
Galactic Civilizations II (with add-ons) >Master of Orion 2 (yep, I went there! :) )

Chrono Cross to Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Cross is far better than Chrono Trigger

Yakuza series > Shenmue

Although personally Yakuza reminds me more of River City Ransom.

I used to think Yakuza was Shenmue without the soul. I still think that's true to an extent, but I respect Yakuza for what it is: an awesome beat'em'up with a great setting and gangster fiction.

Don't see why since they've existed side-by-side for all but two years of their existence. And they're quite different from each other.

Fire Emblem has been around since the NES. Though AW is the reason Fire Emblem was ever brought stateside.

You made me go and do it: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SpiritualSuccessor

As for my opinions, I would say I think Crackdown and Red Dead Redemption are good SS for the GTA series. Crackdown took an open world idea and kind of dropped most of the story for more of the exploratory aspects, though the idea of it being a successor is debatable.

As for RDR, I would say it was just a better game than the ones it was based on. It took one series and made a sequel for it with the feel of another series, making the final product greater than the sum of it's parts.

Another good SS I would say is NBA Hangtime from NBA Jam. It was cleaner had career modes and character creation, plus some pretty kickin' tunes.

Also, I think Lost Odyssey did a much better job of being a Final Fantasy game than any other SE RPG this generation.

My vote goes to Hyperdimension Neptunia Mk2, since the second game is not a direct sequel but more of a new story with the same characters in slightly different roles. It was far better than the original game.

I'm one of like, 6 people who like Osman more than the original Strider. Strider 2 on the other hand, perhaps my favorite arcade action game.

Parodius > Gradius
Life Force > Salamander

I also agree with the OP, the guys who say "PD > GE" (because they're right). Then again, I also say "TimeSplitters > PD", because...yeah.

Other notable examples:

Ikaruga > Radiant Silvergun
King of Fighters > Fatal Fury
Bayonetta > Devil May Cry

Also, people don't know the difference between "sequel" and "spritual successor".

Shadows of the Damned>Vanquish
These two games have absolutely nothing to do with each other, other than Shinji Mikami working on both of them.

Xenosaga is inferior to both Xenogears and Xenoblade alike. Yes, I'm aware that it was only XS specifically that was created for the sake of being a deliberate spiritual successor to XG...but that's precisely its problem. XB takes the best aspects associated with XG, all while adding more than enough things of its own to distinguish it. XS made a point of taking the worst qualities of XG and stretching them across three games (this sounds about right); it was so busy trying to be like XG, but grander in scope in respect to its ridiculously pretentious story that the team forgot what made that game work in the first place. XS was ambitious, but it lacked focus.

The fact that it took them three games to make anything particularly noteworthy with that franchise, only to still screw it up in the end, while they largely managed to accomplish what they needed to in one game, even after running out of time and money with Xenogears (Disc 2 obviously being the reason for the "largely" qualifier here), says something. I'm quite glad to see that Xenoblade was the sort of game that they produced after Takahashi looked back on what went wrong with Xenosaga.

I think it's possible to consider Deus Ex 3 a spiritual successor to the MGS series, and FF13-2 a spiritual successor to the Chrono games due to its time travel plot and mechanics (and Chrono Trigger uses an FF battle system anyway).

I'm not saying that those games are necessarily better though, I'm just making an observation I hope is accurate.

I'm no expert with dmc (I suck at those damn games), but I felt that the only thing bayonetta got right was how accessible it is, and how easy it is to learn the controls, it's the reason I love it.

I find the boss fights, enemies, and style system more solid in dmc3, the accessories in bayonetta are nice extras to have but I felt that there aren't enough depth with some of those, like parrying gives you a little health boost and counter but it's no where near as cool and rewarding as something like Royal Guard in DMC3.

Didn't like some of the bosses in bayonetta outside of Jeanne and the first boss either :P

Chrono Cross is far better than Chrono Trigger

Chrono Cross to Chrono Trigger. (Personal opinion, obviously.)

I just enjoy the music, setting & combat a lot. (They have a LOT of useless characters but of that roster, if you don't like the useless ones then they have good ones as well. I used Serge, Norris & Grobyc.)

Edit: I do like Chrono Trigger a heck of a lot, without it there'd obviously be no Chrono Cross but yeah... it's hard to explain. The first time I saw the trailer it's been my favorite game of all time... still is. I get that way every time I see the first FF Versus XIII trailer too.

I thought I was the only odd-man out. (T_T)

Chrono Cross is disqualified as a spiritual successor being that well, it's the sequel to CT.

I know it's officially billed as a sequel, but the way it's executed pretty much makes it feel like it falls somewhere between a spin-off and a spiritual successor.

I think Arc Rise Fantasia was made by ex-Tales developers, right? If only the voice acting was good for the English version. It could've been a good spiritual successor. Not better than Tales from which it's inspired from, but still pretty good. I think it's arguably better than Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of the New World, which is considered a disappointment.

How about XenoBlade? Is it considered a spiritual successor to XenoGears/XenoSaga since it's made by the same developers?

Xenoblade was given "xeno" upon Nintendo's request. That's not the name Monolith chose for it.

As for Xenosaga, I think the story for Xenogears ultimately comes out on top due to less story reliance on meaningless biblical connections (which is only true to a point, but still). But the gameplay and progression in the Xenosaga games are much better.
