Splatoon 2 is absolutely STUFFED with bizarre design decisions

It seems to me that as long as you play ranked and do alright you will go straight from C- to B-. Ended up going from C- to B- on all 3 modes and it seems I think requires 5-6 wins to get there, some I even lost a few games to where I had two cracks in my bar, yet still skipped C and C+. They should have just allowed league right when you unlock rank to play with friends, but it really isn't too bad to unlock it, unless you just somehow have really bad luck through all 3 modes

Lol I dont how you are skipping levels but I barely escaped C- and made it to C. I consider myself a decent player and its taking forever. It just seems weird that if you have 4 little kids who are friends who arent really good will never have the chance to play on the same team.

You already know which maps are available before you even enter a lobby so you can pick your gear accordingly

I don't pay much attention, but I think even though you know what are the 2 maps available (for ranked) you don't know beforehand the map you're actually going to play. In that case you can't have specifics loadout per map.

I don't have any worries about my boys playing ARMS, MK8, Splatoon 2 on the Switch. None whatsoever.
The problem is... That every advantage you say this ecosystem architecture has... Can be used the same way with an integrated chat voice. It is not about how they choose to protect from harassment but on what device they chose to implement their communication tool.
I really don't understand how people don't see that every reason they give to justify the use of a smartphone is nonsense. The same usage, mechanics and restrictions can be used on an internal audio chat.

So please... Don't says it is for the children they choose this. It's not.

Welp the stupidness just got me today, I came on Splatoon earlier played some turf war before dinner, saw Salmon run was open. So after dinner and a movie I come back to play Salmon run and the thing is closed WTF, it doesnt even stay open all day on the days its open.

I had the game since launch and only played Salmon run one time

Salmon Run was opened for 24 hours. No offense, but you should have checked the times.

The online app as it stands is far from ideal, sure, but conceptually its fine. Voice comms or party systems don't have to be on the console itself

Conceptually it's god damn awful. Let alone the execution. I tried it over the weekend with a friend, and besides not being able to turn off the screen, your voice chat just up and quits when you exit a lobby in-game. It's a total shit show.

Just let me have voice chat with friends on the console. I don't need to talk to randos. Just let me talk to my friends without having to drain my phone's battery. It's an indefensible system.

Personally, it is a good thing that with the Switch and Nintendo games, I have a system and software that I know if safe for my kids to play on. It's a ball ache to set up my PC in a way that I feel comfortable for my eldest to play Minecraft on. He has to play it under supervision with me taking a keen interest in anything online/server related to ensure his safety. Same deal with iPads and PS4. Their limited parental controls and range of software only go so far in protecting from toxic behaviour.

This argument falls apart the same moment you consider a parental control app exists, which would obviously be able to restrict voice chat if it existed on the console itself. You would have the exact same tranquillity. If you are too lazy to configure the parental control app, that's on you.

He shouldn't have to. The fact is that there is no reason that game mode shouldn't be available at all times.

Not no reason (developer's choice), but I agree. You could throw this in with a lot of the design of Splatoon 2, which seems to be more about creating a 'world' feel. Without it, there's no reason for a lot of things in the game - a 2-hour map rotation, no reason all ranked game types shouldn't always be available, no reason Murch takes a day to receive ordered gear instead of right away, no reason you can only order one piece of gear a day, no reason to have the Off the Hook announcements, no reason you need to go to a separate counter to claim your rewards from Salmon Run, no reason for 4 shops instead of 1 that sells all types of weapons/gear, etc etc.

I hope they make adjustments to Salmon Run and expand it - because it is clearly popular. I imagine they'll adapt it in their own unique way. Maybe rewards are available only during certain times instead?

That's really the crux of the decision to limit it I think. The rewards would need to be scaled back if they were to open it up at all times. Or they could continue down the Grizzco business theme and have high and low demand times. Better rewards during high demand times (essentially the same as their current schedule) and low rewards during low demand times.

When you think that the discussion can't get more ridiculous than it already is, you get posts like this.

In a world were a dedicated app for parental control exists.

Unbelievable.

Decided to hop on and play 10 matches with my friend who just moved across the country. 8 matches on different teams, 2 matches on the same team. It would have been substantially more of a good time if we were teamed up the whole time. I don't want to hear the excuses about matchmaking algorithms. I'm constantly on teams with less-than-ideal loadouts and other games can figure it out just fine.

The game is incredibly fun but I feel like anytime I want to do something there is this grey cloud hanging over my experience with weird-ass design choices.

Yeah it's supposed to be a 50/50 chance, but due to that it's a crap shoot and could end up like you did where the majority of games aren't even on the same team. I still don't know why they set it up like this, cause if you have friends, you usually wanna play with them and not have to hope every round they are on your team. This is one of the things I really hope gets changed the most, it really needs it

Not to pile on, but this Splatfest seems really bizarre as well. I don't like that we can't team up with just one other person and search for randoms. Its all solo or squads. The games feel very unbalanced. My friend has lost like 10 games in a row by a large amount. Ive won 3 in a row by a large amount. That just may be on the luck side of things

Really, it's by being good lol. The game has individual stats for each player that determine how much they jump after matches and between ranks. It's so players aren't penalized for being on bad teams (assuming they still win matches)
