Splatoon 2 Testfire Thread: This is a port...able game now

c2pZnxw.jpg

Playin too much Zelda... I messed up a couple time because of this.

Switch screenshots are already inherently compressed when uploaded, you gotta see this game on the Switch display to appreciate the colors and general looks. If the game is just limited to 720p to keep a locked 60FPS, that's fine IMO. I'd rather take a locked framerate over a res boost in this game.

It will in Japan. In the western world, though, I doubt it will sell many. Too colorful and not bloody enough for the typical shooter market here.

Did I travel back in time to 2015? Where people like you said it won't do well and then ate some major crow, when it was successful worldwide.

Fun but samey. Could be DLC for the first Splatoon in its current form (visuals and lack of material changes...1 to amari kawaribae shinai). Music is great as always. Hoping to be surprised with the final release (a la 3D World for the Wii U).

amarikawaribaesinaittesonomamaeigodemotuuziruyouninattano?

There's absolutely no reason for it to be limited to the same quality as handheld mode, though, at worst it should be 900p.

Of course really! It's 720p with no AA. Bro, that's super disappointing in 2017, no matter how you cut it.

Except its not.

Splatoon has always been about kick ass game play and art style.

Both shine through in spades.

Couldn't give two shits how many P's it is.

Plays like a dream.

I don't know if my Switch just has really iffy connection issues in the room I played in or if the servers were being wonky, but I only got to play a few complete matches. I feel like it's my Switch having wifi issues rather than the server, but that's a shame if so because I have no connection issues in here with any of my other devices.

That aside, I'm loving the Dualies. My main weapon in 1 was the Splashomatic, Dualies are pretty similar in terms of range, power, and firing speed so they were an easy thing to pick up. I also really love the ink jet and the curling grenades. The two maps are also pretty solidly designed. My main issue is that I'm an idiot and I kept getting thrown by my muscle memory, and so I would open up the map frequently and lead to myself dying.

So is it just easier to rack up a higher score in this game, or am I just doing obscenely well? Turf war was my jam in the original, my average score on most maps was usually hovering around 1500ish, and tonight I didn't have a single match below 1500. I wanna say it's just easier to score higher because while I did break 2000 fairly regularly in the original, I effortlessly got 2121p in my second match tonight on a map I had never played with weapons I'd used once before. Maybe I'm just underestimating myself at this game, I dunno, but I feel like it's got to be a scoring system thing rather than me being the god of turf war.

People saying its zelda thats messing them up, but its because im a splatoon vet thats messing me up, the jump on the Wiiu gamepad was the X button

It means there are a lot of "neat" changes (new supers/specials), an additional "referee," some cosmetic changes to the characters, etc., but no changes that made me feel I was playing a different game than the first Splatoon, which I have logged hours on. No changes that would really affect the outcome of a match if it took place in the first game.

I'm really curious about what exactly people are expecting to have added into the game's center turf war mode that would've made things "different enough" to not have these sorts of opinions crop up constantly. Turf War is one of several game modes, of which there will be more, and assuredly will include new modes entirely. You're playing the game with returning weapons with completely revamped specials, in addition to completely new weapons that will be in the main game. Even returning weapons have additional functions and complexity added. Is this not the sort of stuff that's expected of a sequel to an online shooter? New weapons, maps, modes, moves, options, changed/improved UI, changed controls, new events, continual future updates...like I honestly don't understand this line of thinking and I haven't since the game's reveal.

Should people be able to summon mecha-suits or ride on dinosaurs in the middle of a match? Hell for all we know maybe those are still possible since we don't know what all the specials even are yet. Yeah the game's going to feel similar. It's a sequel. It's the second game in a brand new franchise and even with everything that we know is new or different it's still just a sliver of a bigger picture. Where is the line between sequel and DLC supposed to be drawn, exactly?

Yeah, regional matchmaking makes me think I'm actually decent.
Then I notice I never encountered any Japanese.

This might actually be the reason I kept losing haha.

1st its South Koreans on Starcraft 1/2 and now Splatoon 2 will destroy me with Japanese players! Being part of the Asia networks (I'm in Australia) is pretty lame when there are such good/experienced players out there! :'(

Then again, first time playing it and all. It's to be expected.

I think my main issue was having to move left and right with the right stick and then having the gyro, biggest hurdle

Meaning camera left and right

I actually had a really good match with motion, but overall I still feel more comfortable with it off. My movement is especially better. It's not how I wanted it to be, but the dream is dead. IR aiming (and a free reticle not locked to center) that doesn't ever influence your view with full range camera control via the right stick... The dream is dead. :(

This was my first experience with Splatoon, and I thought it was pretty cool. I'm not a multiplayer guy, though, so while I enjoyed the hour I played I don't really feel any compulsion to play any more. Is there any word on whether there's a more substantial singleplayer element to Splatoon 2? I know the first game had one, but it sounded too short and inconsequential to buy the whole game for. I could really go for a great, reasonably meaty singleplayer game in this universe, since I quite like the controls, the music and the overall style, but if it stays mainly multiplayer it's probably just not for me.

The fact that my Switch simply cannot connect to the internet until I physically bring it closer to my router means online games are basically out of the question anyway. I played the whole hour sitting at my table with the Switch in kickstand mode, hunched over and squinting at the screen, which was just dumb. Every other console I own sits in the exact same spot, but only the Switch can't connect to my router. Piece of junk.

I will agree and think this is probably because this is a demo that its 720p, splatoon 2 has obvious graphical enhancements over 1 but I wouldnt say its to a point where it would limit the switch, Mario kart 8 probably more graphically intensive than splatoon 1/2 and they already promising us 1080p/60fps even in multiplayer.

It could be that they're trying to absolutely lock down that 60fps before they worry about things like resolution, its also possible that the team isnt very experienced in this area and are struggling to reach that with their current expertise.(in the same way gamefreak wasent really quite adjusted to making games in 3D, and now they have to make them in HD, oh shit.)

While it's totally fine that you don't care about how a game looks, most people do. For me, 720p with no AA is absolutely insane in 2017. You may say framerate actually improves the gameplay, which is true, but resolution actually improves the visible detail. So it's important, too.

Natta natta. Didn't you get the memo?

No need to get defensive. I was just giving my impression after an hour of playing the TRIAL version, and that impression is that it feels not much different than Splatoon 1. LIke I said, I'm hoping enough is packed into the final product to surprise me and come off as something new.

Pfft, a true sequal is made entirely from scratch. New engine, new characters, new genre, new time period, new developers. I won't stop calling this a port until they make splatoon a 17th century RTS with jet packs and wall running.

Game's gonna' be quite a bit more successful in the west than the first game, which was already a multimillion seller outside Japan.

I can understand if this is something you won't want to do (since it's gonna' cost you around $50), but I bough ta TP-Link powerline adapter with WiFi boosting and placed it in the same room as my Switch, which made the Switch go form "I'll connect to the internet for you once a day....if I'm feeling nice" to "fine! Here's your WiFi, now leave me alone!" It's been an incredible improvement and my Splatoon 2 experience was even better than Splatoon 1, which was already smooth as silk for me. The Switch simply has incredibly weak WiFi....it's really bad. But this completely fixed the issue for me. And yes, it was really dumb that I had to pay $50 to make that happen.

I guess I'm not trying to be defensive, but I see the "could just be DLC / doesn't seem like a sequel" sentiment show up so often and I really am genuinely curious about what standard people are applying to that, as it's not something I recall often seeing levied at other games around the genre. I really would like some concrete examples or suggestions just to at least have some frame of reference for where this is coming from, as for me, coming off of the first game I booted this testfire up for the first time and immediately a lot felt new. Maybe a lot of those changes are just nuance things but there's a lot of them and to me they added up pretty quickly and obviously into something distinct enough from the first game's style and content.

Most people play games on their phones at random ass resolutions.

First hour today had me feeling like I had lost my Splatoon 1 skills in the downtime, but then I focused back on my mid range weapon and it all came back mostly by the second hour. Had a 5 game run of scores like this. Felt great.

Thoughts on the game:

-I personally can't play portably because it's too hard for me to aim with the screen moving and I lose too much spacial awareness. Luckily with the Pro Controller the game has never felt better. So glad to have the bulk of the gamepad gone.
-Always get jump and map confused. Like everyone it seems.
-Dualies seem cool, but I still can't deal with peashooter weapons in this game. Mid-range, mid-power will probably always be where I'm at. Love the little dodge hop though. Saw some real good stuff from players that had gotten skilled with that. Hoping they give us mid-rangers some new toys to play with like the dualies.
-Didn't like the map choice. The maps aren't bad, but the two are too similar. I want some maps with more traversal.
-Supers generally seemed nerfed all around as has been mentioned, but that's not really a bad thing. Once I got used to the missiles, they were far more deadly than the inkstrike which I found basically never splatted anyone in splatoon 1 once players got used to it. Really great when the enemy is grouped together to force them to scatter or combining it with some clever gun usage to cut off escape routes basically guarantees a splat one way or another. Major nerf in those terms is that there's no longer a guaranteed huge ink covering like became the main selling point of ink strike for me.
-Jetpack seems powerful, but it makes the player a huge target. Once I was used to it, I was splatting players out of the air all the time. Ultimately I think it's less OP than it looks.

Just give me a date already nintendo. I'm ready.

Some various notes and observations watching streams of the testfire thus far. Sorry for any repetition of information

  • You can dash with Dualies whilst in the air! You don't need to be on the ground for this to work! Source: https://gfycat.com/ElasticPhonyIndianglassfish
  • The Charger glow when beginning and holding a charge is super easy to see and gives away their position so well. The Repositioning buff for rollers to hold a charge in squid form briefly was really needed with this change, but even then, I can see chargers having to play a lot smarter in this game to avoid being taken out.
  • Curling Bomb makes a unique sound when the bomb runs out of momentum and starts detonating. You can also throw Curling Bombs onto higher ledges by jumping into the air (Such as on The Reef), and the bomb will travel just fine.
  • A marker now appears in the Ink recharge pop-up to indicate how much ink you require to use your sub weapon. Curling Bombs only seem to use 50% of the tank.
  • Vertical Flick of the roller seems to be able to OHKO, but the victim needs to be closer to the user for this to work. Hitting a target towards the max range of the flick appears to be non-lethal. The vertical flick also seems to hard counter low mobility inkjets, provided you can aim.
  • The "Special charged" shine that appears on an inkling's head is really, really visible from long distances. In addition to the changes in the squid icons at the top, this will make being surprised by sudden special pops much less frequent.
  • Someone has already worked out the Points to Special Charge values!
    C7tcWBpVQAAJELA.jpg

  • Stringray just seems really really bad to start off with. I'm starting to see glimmers of its power with people performing massive swings in camera control and moving in the same direction for better aiming. I've also seen a few smart plays to flush people out. I really need to see more receipts before I think this is a good special.
  • Inkjet blasts do not leave a trail of ink underneath the travel path like a blaster. Also unlike a blaster, the explosive damage radius upon impact with the ground seems substantial; so far it seems to be around 2-3 indirect hits to splat.
  • You can die to Inkjet exhaust! (from an image I posted earlier)
  • Tenta Missiles for a user do still seem to be a Poor Man's Echolocator, as possible targets markers will appear for all enemy squids whether they are in the lock on reticule or not. Could be useful in callouts for higher level play.
  • When you are locked on by enemy Tenta Missiles, a small enemy coloured ring will appear around your squid to indicate missiles are targeting you. HOWEVER, there is also a small marker within the ring, which tells you the DIRECTION from which the missiles were launched from, partially revealing the location of the attacker.
  • Disconnects seem to be very common in a lot of games during the first session, regardless of whether people were primarily being matched up with locals or not. Was the same for Western and Japanese sources, but this is mainly ancedotal.

  • Rollers can now squish you on grates; they couldn't before.

Yeah. I was definitely getting tons of disconnects for at least the first 20-30 minutes of the first hour. I was worried that the Switch's shit wi-fi connection was going to screw me for the room I'm in, but it all worked itself out. Hour 2 was much better with only 1 or 2 disconnects.

Steady disconnects are just there to increase that feeling of nostalgia the OG players have from the original Testfire and Splatfest days.

Man that's really sick lol

I need to try that next.

Vertical Flick of the roller seems to be able to OHKO, but the victim needs to be closer to the user for this to work. Hitting a target towards the max range of the flick appears to be non-lethal. The vertical flick also seems to hard counter low mobility inkjets, provided you can aim.

Whelp, that's it for me. I can't aim lol

(especially when there's a delay between when you push the button and when the paint actually comes out because you have to go through the entire flick motion... I'm not good with that type of stuff)

So I streamed the entire second testfire hour. Still feeling awkward with only the joycons but it's much much better than earlier.

My 3rd fave weapon type, just how much ass you hauled with it was awesome too

I can't wait to see what they do with Octobrush Nouveau. I need them to do some wild shit with my ink swords. Tentamissies/Splashdown would be too great.

The sting ray did not feel weak to me at all.

Stingray is super slept on.

Also, Toad, you can be squished with a roller on grates.

hahahaha man, my experience with splatoon testfire 1 and 2 is like night and day, I got in sorta a decent amount in splatoon 1, but there were sessions where almost the majority of the hour was spent looking at the connection screen. and now I had almost no connection problems, other than people around me having the problem.

I really would like some concrete examples or suggestions just to at least have some frame of reference for where this is coming from

Sure. Some that come to mind are:

-Levels were new but offered nothing fresh in terms of visual style and mechanics
-Pre/post-match screens and wait screens nearly identical. Some new animations when winning/losing.
-Possible to jump in right from the first Splatoon, play exactly the same way and get exactly the same result. You can fault me for wanting more from a sequel if you like.

Switch screenshots are already inherently compressed when uploaded, you gotta see this game on the Switch display to appreciate the colors and general looks. If the game is just limited to 720p to keep a locked 60FPS, that's fine IMO. I'd rather take a locked framerate over a res boost in this game.
I'd accept it but I'm still hoping it's at least 900p/60fps docked.

For an MP shooter, this is exactly what you should want. There's lots of little differences and improvements, but the core is very similar.

Now, the single player needs to be a decent improvement or I'll probably be disappointed. The game also needs some new modes, preferably ones that can be played solo, since this can be played in portable mode and there will be many cases where someone wants to play Splatoon, but won't have internet access.

They actually said that this is what they're doing in an interview a while ago.
