Splatoon Hands-on & Gameplay Videos

Whenever I see this game I wish it had The World Ends With You's soundtrack.

I get the voice chat complaints, but I guess when I think about it I really don't.. care much. The only thing I ever really use voice chat for is to express joy or displeasure at various events when playing with friends, not to actually do anything tactical. I imagine most of my time online in this game will be vs randoms, so I won't be missing anything there.

It's an objective based multiplayer shooter. No voice chat is a big mark against it. You'd think we'd at least have pre-canned team messages like "push forward" or "defend this zone."

Yup, some kind of ping system would be great!

Like what if you notice the enemy team is going for an ambush at a certain spot. Moving your character closer or away from there doesnt really help at all.

This game does truly looks amazing. Lack of voice chat is very disappointing but not a deal breaker for me.

I really want to play it, it looks like such fun

Read that as voice acting for a second and was like squids don't talk silly! :P

Voice chat in general would be nice, which is why there should be system wide party chat so we don't have this concern anymore. However I hope people are watching the videos and seeing the speed at which matches are playing out. I really doubt voice chat, for trying to determine a strategy would, would even be useful. Encounters and situations are decided and changed far to quickly.

Because you have a right to know what kind of business everyone online has been having with your mother ;-)

LOL

I know. I'm referring to this:

Ten pages focused on the communication issues.
People here act like it's something new. That was my point.

Voice chat would be nice to have, but I honestly don't think it's going to be a huge loss for this game. Matches look so chaotic and unpredictable, I think it'd be pretty tough to come up with a good strategy lol

The CHAOS is why this looks so much fun! I'm not into competitive games at all but, like Mario Kart, I'm making a big exception for this one.

King of the hill is ranked battles only, huh? Hopefully not too many disconnects from the losing team :\

If it won't be available at launch I hope they don't wait 6 months to implement it.

I think that the map system and instant jumping ability is their way of minimizing the need of "communication" since so much of Splatoon is based off of visual feedback and constant movement.

That said I'm expecting to set up a Skype group with my chums regardless.

For a game where you can easily see what the situation is, what area needs more ink, etc just by looking at the map? Not really.

Really like the small detail of the inkling holding their ears when the huge rocket weapon is launched. You can see in the gametrailers' video at 4:18.

Still voice chat shouldn't dominate this topic.

Interesting they're going to unlock Splat Zones instead of having it available right away and that it's going to be ranked with your rank rising and lowering. Glad that's included.

Game looks seriously awesome, but really with the no voice chat? Come on Nintendo.

Heroes of storm doesn't have voice chat either like a lot of Moba, so that ain't really a problem, imo to win.

I don't know about HotS, but most MOBAs also have an actual text chat in game.

At least there's a constant map and the objective is clear enough, no voice chat with friends sucks though.

Need to see what the lobby system is like.

I thought Pro Controller support and local multiplayer were confirmed ages ago?

If I'm stuck using that dog shite tablet controller and can't even play with my fiancée, then my interest in this is gone, so anyone want to allay my concerns?

It's literally a controller with a touchscreen in the middle. Nothing tablet about it.

My only negatives are the lack of voice chat and the lack of configuration of local multiplayer. I have a sneaking suspicion that the latter will be disappointing as well.

Oh snap. I kind of forgot that this is a platformer as well. I honestly had given up hope that we'd see another Nintendo 3D platformer that wasn't Mario.

So... is the single player supposed to be lenghty or is it going to be more like a big tutorial to get your ready for multiplayer?.

A good single player might make me consider picking this up

Check out my footage in the GameTrailers preview. Not sure how long it will be, but it's way beyond being a tutorial. Completely different focus and mechanics from the multiplayer.

Thank goodness. The Gamepad is far and away the least comfortable controller I've ever used. Captain Toad has made me despise the damned thing.

Hopefully at least 1v1 will be a thing too then, though still disappointing. Considering Nintendo has been on such good form with local multiplayer this gen, Splatoon dropping the ball on it completely would be criminal.

So happy that at least one other mode was confirmed.

And I like how it keeps the spirit of kills not being the focus.

I hope there are more though

Single player looks fun from the GT footage

A local 1v1 mode was "mentioned" during an interview last E3 and the developers hinted at it being more of a "stealth" type of versus (one person using the Pro controller, one person using the Pad), but nothing has been shown of it so far.
The eurogamer gameplay video also mentions that "nintendo hasn't announced anything officially" for co-op play, but they make it sound in a way that means "we can't talk about it but expect more info soon". It's around the 2:50 mark

First generations of new franchises rarely light the world on fire. Lets hope this gets at least a cult following so that Splatoon 2 on NX can swoop in and be the huge hit a la Smash Melee. This needs 4 player split screen online and voice chat for the next one.

Honestly the lack of voice chat isn't any kind of deal breaker for me. I never would use it anyway.

Honestly, I am pumped for this game even though it isn't a type of game I would usually enjoy. It just looks so fresh and different, and I love the turf war concept where it isn't about killing the other players, it's about taking territory.
