*Spoiler* Grand Theft Auto V map leaked *Spoiler*

Using the relative size of blocks and airport runways I came up with this size comparision. I think it's more realistic then some of the other ones posted.

If it really IS that big then Holy Jesus that's a big world. The best part is this is a GTA game so you know there will be tonnes of details everywhere

Here's a bit of an adventure I had years ago playing San Andreas for the first time:

I was up to some shenanigans, and had to escape the police. During the chase, my car careened off the road and exploded, leaving me stranded in the forest/countryside between San Fierro and Las Venturas. I was nowhere near a vehicle, or a person with a vehicle, and I found myself running as fast as I could through the trees in an attempt to find the city again.

As I was bumbling through the forest, the weather began to turn sour, and soon there was a heavy fog obscuring my vision. I could hear nothing but CJ's footsteps on the earth, and I could barely make out the trees ahead of me. And then I saw them.

Up ahead, were two glowing orbs, floating in the fog. As I approached, the battered shape of an abandoned vehicle, lights on, engine running, door open. Aside from the wind in the trees, the vehicles engine, and other ambient noises, there were no other sounds. It was one of the most atmospheric things I've encountered in a GTA game, and it was creepy as fuck. I high-tailed it out of there as fast I could. I didn't even bother to steal the car. Lol.

The thought of getting lost in that immense wildlife in GTAV has me pumped as fuck. I want more nightmare fuel.

There also was a car in the forest with scratches on it that drove without passenger a couple of meters like Christine iir.

I still want my Vegas & San Fran. More importantly Vegas since it makes a bit more sense geographically.

They could have at least put Vegas in there as its not THAT big and all R* would really need to do is replicate the strip.

I think Vegas especially adds so much for the game, but I'm not sure if it becomes Test Drive Unlimited.

But I liked the TDUII concept of online gambling and hanging out.

But mainly for easy revenue generation, cuz I kick ass in poker.

And riding thru Venturas at night with the radio on was ... at least in my limited memory, pretty immersive.

The only thing that's slightly disappointing is the size of the desert. I mean, I'm sure it's big, but it's not as humongous or desolate as it could have been.

Damn, imagine your plane/helicopter going down in the wilderness. Also noticed a prison, power station,"National Office of Security Enforcement" among other interesting landmarks. The scale is quite incredible; I'd imagine 'Grapeseed' will seem quite distant from the shore of 'Sandy Shores'; then look at how far down the rivers the ocean is. Yeah the whole thing is just huge; even the city is pretty large. Load up that full size image in weekend_warrior's post and just look around. Crazy.

And not a damn thing to do other than blow shit up and swim in empty water. JC2 is a fun game, but the wasted space is it's downfall.

JC2 is probably the open world game I've spent the most time with, but they could definitely take some inspiration from R* in the world building department.

I can't believe people are still stressing over map/city size. Multiple mappers on GTAForums, y'know the site that mapped this game nearly perfectly aside from the rural roads months ago, have said the city is as big as the entire map from GTAIV if you removed the water in between, if not a tiny bit bigger. On top of that Rockstar has recently said in an interview that Los Santos is effectively all the islands from GTAIV smashed together, exactly what people have been saying on GTAForums.

It's a big city, it's a big map.

And for people concerned about the countryside/desert being sparse, this is post-Red Dead Redemption Rockstar, not Avalanche Studios, or even the Rockstar that made San Andreas. The countryside will have a lot of personality.

That is all I am saying. As fun as it can be to do stunts, blow shit up, fly around, etc, you can't get around how barren the gigantic world is. The limitation takes it's toll on you after awhile. So much wasted space. Hell, the least they could have done is add some exploration in the water and perhaps throw in some sharks.

The reason people are excited is not because its big or bigger than game X, Y and Z, its because they know Rockstar will use the space for something, they have that ability to make sure every section has a purpose, instead of just making large landscape and calling it a day.

I am glad we have lots of wilderness with smaller towns and a few gas stations, it makes the city feel more special and unique when there is actually something else.

GTA4 was just city, it was dull as hell from a artistic point of view, there was no context or feel for the world, thus the city was no longer special, since it was always the default place you were in, since there was nothing else.

And that's why I can never go back to a Liberty City based GTA unless they can figure out a way to include suburbs and countryside. And it's still fairly flat over there too. Southern California just has everything you'd want in GTA to me.

Large city, desert, mountains, skiing, beaches, lots of elevation changes, Indian casinos, water stuff, small rural towns, military bases. All that stuff really is within a couple hours of LA. It's in a part of the country with cities designed for cars and not public transport as well which is just better for GTA.

Exactly. Sharks and maybe the occasional mountain lion that would just jump you from nowhere would have made things much more interesting.

He is about right. This is actually the correct size comparison of V, RDR, IV and SA:

Made by Magic_Al at GTAForums. He put a lot of work and effort into scaling the maps correctly.

EDIT: This should be included in the OP instead of the wrong size comparison.

Exactly.

GTA V's world is meticulously handcrafted, while Just Cause 2's is a vast realm of nothingness.

Ehhhh, you have no idea how much "nothingness" GTAV's world will have. It'll probably have a fair bit, looking at the amount of wilderness it has.

Look, real talk? It doesn't matter how much empty space your game world has, so long as you don't stick the player in it and force them to run to the nearest objective 500 miles away, then you're good. Just give the player the means to get to wherever they want to go, and you can have a Steelport or a San Andreas, it doesn't matter. You had to go out of your way in Just Cause 2 to be seriously stranded (you blow up a plane in the sea, that's on you), and likewise GTA will have plenty of cars to steal to get around.

The fact that the entirety of GTAIV fits within the Los Santos city limits and that the entirety of RDR fits within just the countryside is enough for me!

Ok I'm going to wait until people have the game and start exploring on twitch before I become impressed. I take back my "Impressed" it seems like it may have been badly scaled in the early comparison pictures. Still looks big at least, though there needs to be tons to do with all that size, not just a good road to sight see.

It's fake.

The picture is a real advertisement processed screen shot. Just made edited to look like it has game UI and off screen picture.

HA! I never encountered that car, but that sounds awesome. I do think I remember encountering a cemetery and the sound of laughing children one time. I loved GTA:SA. I hope GTAV has similar easter eggs.

EDIT: I'm also of the camp that thinks that "open world" doesn't always equal "OMFG, game of the forever!" I love me some open world games, but I think there's absolutely nothing wrong for an open world game to be scaled down for game fun purposes. RDR helped mitigate this by having "random" events occur while you were alone for long periods of time. I hope GTAV does the same thing.

One of my favorite things to do in the real world living in Los Angeles is taking long drives along the PCH with my wife. I find it similarly relaxing in video games as well. I personally don't have to be blowing shit up every 30.6257 seconds in order to feel like I'm having a good time. My expectations for GTAV are firmly in check, but I'm still looking forward to next Tuesday like everybody else.

Spot on! I can't imagine that these same people even looked or viewed the same screenshots/trailers that I have. Then reading reddit/GTAForums for more info of people who are way more talented than I am with figuring this stuff (which has all been reposted here).

It's a no-brainer, to doubt the size at this point in the game is just covering your ears and yelling "LA LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU!".

Best comparison I've seen. Looking great, just great.

You really HAVE to get a plane to get places. I like that. It will feel like a real trip.

Also I hope you can actually get "lost" in the wilderness. Like maybe the map goes away when you're out of network or something.

The best part is even despite mappers on the internet being able to map the city and basic shape of the landmass, smaller towns like Fort Zancudo and Grapeseed have gone mostly unknown. Just take a look at those areas in comparison to the city, and the city zoom.gif in this thread. Those are legit small towns. Not to mention Paleto Bay up north, and Sandy Shores in the middle that have a bunch of icons on them.

This looks to be a damn good map; much bigger and more varied than GTAIV. I'm excited.

The biggest, glaring problem with Just Cause 2's world is there is almost no neat atmosphere or memorable landmarks. There's like three boring modern cities, and then tiny towns with hut like villages everywhere. Exploration amounts to finding money stashes, weapon parts, and stuff.

Red Dead Redemption and San Andreas are amazing open worlds because of the atmosphere and environmental motifs. The wilderness in San Andrea means entirely different NPC's, vehicles, weapons, and landscape. Red Dead Redemption had two main desert environments but the differences in lighting, landscape, wild life, and NPC's make the differences easy to spot.

The whole map being open from the start in GTA V means there isn't landcape or environment progression. Instead of placing the player in a new area and giving the player new missions and tools, GTA V allows for varied mission and landscape variety from the start .

That reminds me, the main cities from San Andreas weren't even the highlights of discovery or exploration. Finding small towns or different tourist spots out in the boonies was thrilling, not knowing who or what you find outside big cities was what San Andreas excelled at.

Rockstar made it a priority to thrill the player with the unknown, rather than build multiple cities.

There are actually quite a few landmarks in Just Cause 2, it's just the rest of the world is very homogeneous.

I dont think this is accurate at all. The in game world will be on a much smaller scale. People are just getting way too excited comparing the areas to real world.

What? That's not an aerial shot from the real world, that's from the gameplay video! That is an actual part of Los Santos, placed onto the map to show how it fits. It literally could not be more accurate.

Just posted the pics on a german board and minutes later a mod edited my post, because Rockstar didn't officially release the map...:/
