This is based on annual revenue, not the value of the sports franchise like the Forbes 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams list...

We have a section with sports clubs with an annual revenue of at least €20 million and a section with sportsmen with an annual income of at least €20 million. You can contact us for questions, comments or anything else related to this site. Good luck with the financial side of international sports.

I was surprised by the Miami Heat being way down at €86 million. Maybe these numbers are from before last year but the current big bullies of the NBA are down there with some of the not-so-well-known teams I root for, below Everton FC (€89m) and Fulham FC (€86m) and barely above the Oakland A's (€84m)....

Seems awfully low for a franchise like the Toronto Maple Leafs (or Canadiens for that matter). They have nation-wide fanbases.

Wow that seems really low... I guess Ajax (and the Eredivisie) are not what they used to be.

The value that we humans place on professional sports never fails to amaze me. It's seemingly a modern phenomena and I've no idea how or why it started.

We live in a world where footballers earn more than emergency services workers, teachers, doctors, nurses etc.. It's mental.

It takes a lifetime of work to be a great player in any sport, and even then, it's incredibly unlikely that you'll ever see the big leagues no matter how much you try. There are a lot more great teachers than great quarterbacks, and it's a helluva lot easier to make it in the teaching world than in the NFL. Same with doctor, nurse, etc.

Yeah, sure. But from living in Germany, you wouldn't know. It always feels like Bayern is way behind all the British, Spanish or even Italian teams when it comes to money. Maybe because they actually try to make a profit and don't offer the same monster contracts.

Still, they don't have a billion Dollar stadium. And Red Sox caps can be found all over the world, whe for instance Germans couldn't care less about baseball.

Although its a shame that athletes get paid so much more than those who do more for society (doctors, firefighters, teachers etc.) I think it has to be that way. What they do makes loads of money. So if they weren't being paid so much all that money would just be going to the owners of the clubs.

Also worth mentioning most professional sports players have very short careers. Everyone gets very obsessed with the multi-million contracts while forgetting a lot of players in the lower leagues will be on much lower value contracts and realistically only be playing for less than 20 years.

What are the highest second division soccer teams on the list?

128 West Ham United FC (€80 million) was just relegated from the Premier League, 130 Hertha BSC (€79 million) was just promoted from the 2 Bundesliga.

They're only €6-7 million below the Miami Heat, and above the Boston Bruins, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Pittsburgh Pirates, LA Kings, Florida Marlins, etc.

It's not quite the same but I wonder where AAA baseball teams and CFL teams would rank... does NBA have a lower level? The CBA is gone... NBA development league?

Low? 70 million euros son :p. But in comparison it is low. But we are not the best in Europe or even close to that, so its okay. Still the best of the Eredivisie ;).

It is not a big league, but a very fun one to watch.

The list has to be a year old by now. The Cavs revenue has probably dropped by 2/3rds from that.

Okay that would explain why the Miami Heat are so low.

All the Toronto teams, the Eagles, MUFC seem to be in good shape. =)

But damn @ the Islanders (lowest NA "big 4" pro team on there, I believe) and other lowly ranked teams. Puts their dire situations in perspective when put into a list such as this.

And there is a CFL team on there, the Roughriders are #343 on the list.

lol at college teams like the Longhorns and Gators being on the list. The Longhorns make more than some NBA teams.

Yeah, I do get that, unfortunately. We've decided as a society that they are worth that much and therefore they are. It just doesn't sit well with me, I feel that wealth would be better allocated elsewhere. It's not my world to run though.

I broke down the Forbes 50 list by sport:
football: every NFL team :lol
soccer: 9
baseball: 5
motorsports: 2
basketball: the bottom 2

No way I am doing a 400+ list, but it would be interesting to see...
So would a breakdown by country, actually.

We could be up there with Madrid and Barca if we had a TV rights deal similar to theirs.

But that wouldn't be the best for the Prmeiership.

nah, Bayern just likes to complain :). financially they are very sound, they just dont want to compete with the excessive spending of Real, Barca, Man City or Chelsea. most of these high spending teams are either debt ridden (real, barca) or owned by some billionaire. Bayern's success on the business side of things is the only reason they stay competitive in Europe.

Professional athletes don't have careers nearly as long as most occupations, with the most extreme example being the NFL:

Business Week:
•Average NFL player salary: $1.9 million
• Median NFL player salary: $770,000
• Average NFL career length: 3.5 years
• Number of players on injured reserve in 2010: 352
• Average NFL player age: 27

Apparently this is disputed:
““There is a little bit of a misrepresentation or a misunderstanding on that. Frequently, it is said that the average career is about 3.5 years. In fact, if a player makes an opening day roster, his career is very close to six years,” Commissioner Goodell said. “If you are a first-round draft choice, the average career is close to nine years. That 3.5-year average is really a misrepresentation. What it adds is a lot of players who don’t make an NFL roster and it brings down the average.”
According to a recent NFL Management Council analysis of players who entered the NFL between 1993 and 2002, the average career length for a player who is on his club’s opening-day roster as a rookie is 6.0 years.
That 6.0 average is 88 percent higher than NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith’s recent claim.
“The fundamental principle of our business model necessarily includes that every player only plays for an average of 3.2 years,” Smith said in a March 31 forum with MBA students at the University of Virginia.

I see where you're coming from, and it's worth discussing. It's not a matter of their overall worth to society, but how many people could do the job. Millions of people can be teachers, but only a select few can be star basketball players. When a star comes around like Tiger Woods, they'll be paid ridiculous amounts of money for their talent. Many rookie players in Major League Soccer, for example, make about $40,000 a year (less than an average teacher's salary).

Haha... merit and utility only very roughly correlates with how much one is paid in life.

They're certainly not the primary determining factors in how much people are paid for what they do, despite what we may have been ingrained to believe.

Germany is as far as I know still the country with the highest average attendance and Bayern is still a huge team around the world, even if they haven't been amazing the last couple of years.

Well, the money is there for the league from Ad revenue and ticket sales. Also, 50 years ago, there was no free agency, so players couldn't do much of anything if they didn't like their pay. Do you propose the owners keep that large majority of the revenue like 50 years ago? Or do you propose taxing the hell out of it so owners nor players make more than teachers, police, fire fighters, etc?

Searching through both halves of the list:

BY SPORT
Association football: 213 (75 first half, 138 second half)
American football: 60 (34 first half, the 32 NFL teams are all in the top 54, plus 2 college teams, 26 second half, all college teams)
Baseball: 43 (40 first half, including 30 MLB teams with the lowest at 144, 3 second half)
Basketball: 38 (30 first half, that's every NBA team with the lowest at 188, 8 second half)
Ice Hockey: 39 (27 first half, 12 second half, the lowest NHL team is 234)
Australian rules football: 14 (1 first half, 13 second half)
Cricket: 9 (all second half)
Rugby: 4 (all second half)
Canadian football: 1 (second half)

BY COUNTRY
United States: 143 (113 fh, 30 sh)*
United Kingdom: 25 fh, 8 sh
Germany: 13 fh, 13 sh
Japan: 11 fh, 17 sh
Italy: 9 fh, 19 sh
Spain: 7 fh, 20 sh
France: 6 fh, 15 sh
Brazil: 7 fh, 7 sh
Russia: 21 (I'm losing steam...)
Australia: 16
Canada: 10
India: 7
Netherlands: 6
Turkey: 5
Mexico: 4
Belgium: 4
Greece: 4
Saudi Arabia: 4
Switzerland: 3
Argentina: 2 (this is the biggest surprise imo, hell there are 2 MLS teams on this list)
China: 1 (also surprising)

Keep in mind I did this by searching, so there could be other sports on the list, and there are definitely other countries on the list.

*It actually comes up at 144 but I was checking to make sure Scotland shows up under UK and found a typo next to Celtic FC which I have now removed from the OP...

I understand the circumstances of the league, but just remarking how the politics of both regions would lead you to believe the opposite would be true. You would think it would be an easy transition for a soccer league to make.

Hopefully by the time we move in (we are redeveloping it down to 60,000 seats) we'll be back in the Premier League. I'd heard rumours of seats that slide over the track to get closer to the pitch.
