If future installments of the franchise retain Awakening's degradation of traditional FE mechanics, I'd rather that it had died.

I've only played FE7 prior to FEA, but you know, I just don't see any major difference. Though I suppose this is a bit like someone who'd only ever played Mystic Quest and FF XIII and saying the same.

Waifu Emblem..... :(

I wonder if FExSMT will have the same waifu mechanics, fuck. Nintendo was the last person I would of expected to put such "mechanics" in their game. I just hope it sold well for the right reasons (wonderful srpg) not for some shallow feature.

They need to bring Sakura Taisen back or make Valkyria Chronicles; Waifu Edition. You're welcome, Sega.

No, no, please stop.

Sword Art Online 8

So as of this point (judging series based on 8 episodes is a tradition now), I can honestly say I'm not getting the hate. It's dumb, and it isn't my thing, but I could definitely see a 10-14 year old me thinking that the Beater was pretty cool. On the one hand, that the action is so terrible in this show is kind of rank to me, but on the other, I put up with (although begrudgingly) Dragon Ball Z's ultra long charge time marathons.

Still, the action in this show is so terribly disappointing.

Holy fuck, two years? And I'm only 8 episodes in? And no one has cracked the game or beaten it yet, even though they were HALFWAY THROUGH A YEAR AND A HALF AGO? And Kirito is getting to literally sleep through puberty? Lucky bastard, I spent the years of 13-16 being awkward and going through Junior High. Kirito spends them fighting fucking goblins and waifuing whoever.

Also, in two years the world's intelligence agencies have failed to capture a single programmer.

The worst part, though, is I can imagine designing a character like Kirito when I was a kid. Black long coat, loner with a guilty past. I'd have eaten this show up when I was young.

AHAHAHHA, the only reason this guy is better than me is because he's a BEATER. HAAAA. Also, Kirito and Asuna have basically been dating for 2 years now.

That steak is literally twice the size of the animal it came from. Man, I WISH making stew took so little time.

Asuna is what, 14? And she gets marriage proposals frequently? Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.

Music in this scene is pretty much a remix of a song from Chrono Trigger.

Jeez, Kirito, girl is practically your girlfriend. Just party with her. I know you haven't seen them in two years, but your balls are asking you this favor, brah. Remember that virginity you bet?

Okay, so, serious question: What CAN you feel in SAO? Because apparently both Kirito and Asuna can feel Asuna's breasts, and when Asuna hurled Kirito against the statue, he apparently felt that, and the game apparently can simulate sex, but getting kneed in the groin doesn't hurt at all?

This dueling song is my JAM.

hehehehe. Beater.

So uh, when's the show go bad?

Asuna's actually 17 by the 2 year mark. (Kirito's 16)

To answer your sex comment, Chapter 16.5 in the web version of the light novel. Don't do it.

Episode 15 is where the fun begins. Surprisingly there's actually better action in the half of the season people hate the most.

You can feel, but you can't feel *pain*. You'll find out why at the end of the season.

CorvoSol actually hits on the reason SAO gets so much hate.

Its an empty adolescent male power fantasy. Seeing as alot of the people in this thread (especially those who drive the conversation) are older than 13, it is natural they will be repulsed by this. There are other shows that do go for the younger demographic too but they have other aspects that appeal to older people and/or are just better presented and written. SAO is just about how cool Kirito is.

I'm sure 13 year old boys would be more interested in shounen as a power fantasy than Kirito lol. A lot people who like SAO (from what I have seen) like it for the romance and setting ( urghh).

The timing (and juxtaposition) of the two scenes at the end + some of the lines (DREAM BIG AND DO WHATEVER YOU WANT ->
you know what starting
/
SHOKO WON
) got me pretty good.

That said I really need to avoid spoilers, knowing what happened here a week in advance didn't help.

Slayers TRY 1

New OP is crap compared to the last two shows. Just getting that out of the way.

Question: When am I supposed to watch the Slayers movies?

Wait, why is the commercial break image Gourry helping out Chibi Sailor Moon?

Compared to Milgasia,
Filia's dragon form is downright adorable.

Rei Ayanami is as much a choice as she is a love interest and a character.

Asuna's actually 17 by the 2 year mark. (Kirito's 16)

But you MUST be able to feel pain. Kirito clearly feels it when he gets thrown against the statue, and the blue haired guy from the first boss fight is shuddering in pain before he dies.

And 17 or not, Asuna would still have the body of a fifteen year old. Now mind you, I served my mission in Brazil and while fifteen year old Brazilian girls didn't look fifteen, I think its safe to say that Asuna isn't, ahem, sporting their proportions. Which is to say that even if she's 17 she should still LOOK 15.

Asuka won.

Damn you Sadamoto.

Asuka deserved to win.

case in point:

Well, I mean, I was into that, and I don't particularly think that there is anything innately wrong with the male power fantasy at its core. Case in point would be the Count of Monte Cristo. Who HASN'T wanted to be so fucking rich and powerful and smart and cool and slick that he could utterly ruin everyone who ever wronged him? I mean, I'm not that cool or talented, so its fun to read/watch a show about someone who is.

But at the moment its fairly inoffensive to me. Not like, say, Gundam AGE, where Flit's power fantasy goes too far.

I'm sure 13 year old boys would be more interested in shounen as a power fantasy than Kirito lol. A lot people who like SAO (from what I have seen) like it for the romance and setting ( urghh).

I think Kirito's type have their niche, though. And to prove that Kirito is appealing to a certain age group, I have the following exhibit:

Shadow's furious anger aside, he has everything with Kirito. The imouto past, the dead people who haunt him, the loner attitude, black motif, awesome powers, etc.

Yeah, I realized that that came out wrong so I amended it, but let me further clarify: I don't think there's anything wrong with a story that tells us a tale of a larger than life man, because its just a story. What's wrong is when that story goes too far, or someone tries to pass it off as the way we SHOULD live. A fantasy is a fantasy, and within the limits of reason, it should be okay to fantasize.

CorvoSol

It's not a power fantasy if the story disapproves of the protagonist's actions, though.

Maybe I'm just not super versed in what qualifies, then. But the Count, in spite of his actions, is still absolved of any crimes and vindicated of his foes by the end, is he not? I mean, yeah, we get things like Faria and Mercedes talking smack about how the Count should let go of his revenge, but then again, he ruins Villefort, Danglars, and Mondego in spectacular ways and faces no real repercussion, and their punishments are depicted as being more than well deserved. The Counts employment of any means to arrive at his desired ends seems to fit the bill, to me.

The Count of Monte Cristo also has a character arc. He had to be broken down so he could rise up again.

Kirito is cool *just because*

Its the ultimate form of lazy storytelling and is basically outright pandering to the people who like that shit.

Well of course I don't mean that Kirito is equal to the Count, only that I think that a story about a guy who is super freaking badass and no one can touch him or stop him or whatever can be done very, very well. That was my point.

I didn't read the Count till I was 16, mind you, but when I was 13, guys who were just "cool" definitely appealed to me. Shadow the Hedgehog was way cool back then.

This is also the problem. It's possible for a power fantasy to still be good, and entertaining, like Indiana Jones, or any action movie really.

The issues is that SAO is fan-fiction-level tripe full of Gary Stus, Mary Sues, and risible characterization.

I agree with your assessment. Being "cool" doesn't necessarily mean you're badly written. Its just that Kirito is badly written.

^^^ Brandy explains it better than me.

Only good part of the entire hellish ordeal that was this episode was
Asagi pointing out the similarities between Team Rabbits and the Wulgaru soldiers.
Otherwise what a dull, tepid, flaccid, utterly unexciting waste of my time this episode was.

This show ranges from meh to oh God please end the episode now.

Stop being a hipster just because Awakening is the most popular FE title.;)

Oh damn this show's actually sorta funny.

It's nice to have a show that's set up the romance from the beginning instead of beating around the bush the entire time.

Also damn girl you're crazy.

Yeah pretty much and seeing as I am no longer adolescent nor do I have power fantasies, the whole thing came off as completely stupid. I also dont appreciate MMO RPGs like osme do, so that part was lost on me. So really there wasnt a lot to grab onto here.

I'm not sure what you mean about "halfway through a year and a half ago". The halfway mark would be somewhere around Christmas 2023 (when Kirito got the message from Sachi), when the front line was at Floor 49. Episode 8 takes place in October 2024, and they've just reached the boss of Floor 74, so that's 25 floors in about ten months. Not so shabby, considering the difficulty has been gradually ramping up.

Asuna is what, 14? And she gets marriage proposals frequently? Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.

Well, you know, it's been two years so she's actually older than she looks. Also, we're talking about marriage proposals inside a video game. A video game where the ratio of males to females is severely off-balance (not that this stops Kirito from running into girls all the time, but I guess that's just Protagonist Power). And of course, this is Japan.

Okay, so, serious question: What CAN you feel in SAO? Because apparently both Kirito and Asuna can feel Asuna's breasts, and when Asuna hurled Kirito against the statue, he apparently felt that, and the game apparently can simulate sex, but getting kneed in the groin doesn't hurt at all?

peaceiscloser is correct, for the most part you can feel anything in SAO that you could feel in real life (at least to the extent that the game engine can handle it), but pain is the one exception; it's specifically disabled so that players can do battle without, you know, suffering horribly and getting traumatised as fuck.

But you MUST be able to feel pain. Kirito clearly feels it when he gets thrown against the statue, and the blue haired guy from the first boss fight is shuddering in pain before he dies.

Well, even though pain is disabled, you can still feel the impact of getting thrown around, stabbed with things and so forth, which is supposedly pretty disconcerting. Even without pain, shuddering before death is pretty understandable when you've just been one-sidedly beaten up by a giant monster and are painfully (lol) aware of your own imminent demise.

I just remembered that when Asuna mentions she gets marriage proposals all the time, that you should keep in mind that marriage in-game doesn't necessarily mean the same thing in real life. It's "pragmatic."
