Square Enix - Blood of Bahamut

That trailer definitely was very impressive, but as others are saying, it doesn't exactly clear up how the gameplay expands. Obviously we're going to need translated details of either the scans or the website update.

WTF @ SotC meets Final Fantasy???

That's just....I don't know. Watching the end of the trailer made me feel uneasy. It's a portable RPG+SotC where the Colossi actually let themselves destroy instead of fighting to get you off their body. I mean, the little fella wearing the blue cape just stood there slashing his sword and the Colossus lost an arm???? WTF???

I hope the game's a bit more than just fighting waves of enemies on a floating platform and then climbing on a giant.

Still, looks pretty sweet so far.

Like everyone else, I want more details about the game structure.

Considering the scale shown in the trailer, now it looks like gnome-sized people live(d) in that city on the colossus' shoulder.

The game structure is probably going to be like FFXIIRW. It certainly sounds that way. The game will feature over 130 missions, and is entirely mission based. You control a single character out of 7 possible heroes, and in multiplay mode up to 4 players can tackle a mission together as different characters. There are main story missions as well as free missions that are optional.

Thanks for the info. A mission based structure surely works for portable titles. I wonder how deep (or shallow) the gameplay will be.

Is it known already if the multiplayer is for the main story or if there'll be a separate mode for it?

It looks like you can play any mission you've already unlocked.

Is it that similar to SoTC? I only played SoTC until the first colossus so I can't judge. From my limited knowledge the similarity stops at huge bosses (which had similar design) and that's it.

Nice graphics, but the gameplay seems...a little crude. And they didn't quite scale the colossi properly from the artwork.

Finally, I'd like to extend a big 'meh' to mission-based gameplay.

nice little trailer, I wonder how many colossi will be in the game?
it'd be hilarious if they steal the designs for the colossi that were cut from SotC

Ugh can't say I liked what I saw. Hack & Slash combat with SotC ripoff boss/backgrounds? Well it's a fresh base for a game I guess...

Happy to see both screens used effectively though.

Bah, can't see the trailer at work.

So, you can play any mission in multiplayer as well, but have to unlock it in sp first?

Yay at the former, boo at the latter.

Gameplay doesn't look like my cup of tea to be honest. Being nearly impossible for me to play multiplayer locally doesn't help.

Wow. Talk about a LACK OF SCALE. This on the DS, though. (Which, I think, is kind of stupid for this kind of premise.)

Looks like it's running on the same engine as Revenant Wings?

I think it has a pretty good scale, especially considering the system. I had been worried about the framerate when I heard what it was, but it looks good.

Thanks. Can anyone describe a little bit what the game seems to play like?

There's minimap on the top screen showing the platforms and how they connect. The bottom screen is where the action is. It's a semi-side-scrolling view like in the screenshots, where you control a single character running around the platforms. The Gigant in the background does projectile attacks from a distance or throws shit that you avoid. There are also enemy waves that climb or jump onto the platforms which you must fight. There are special attacks mapped as icons on the touch screen and it seems they have a recharge time after using them. You basically attack the waves of enemies on the platforms to clear them, and do range attacks to hit the Gigant in the background. After a while the Gigant will approach the platform and you can do more damage to it or attack it's weak spots ala SotC. The trailer shows the right arm having a weak spot on the elbow joint and after attacking it enough it breaks off in cutscene.

Well, if you're wondering if the game itself can be played completely via co-op, I don't know because there isn't that much data on the site. But it SEEMS to me like the multiplayer is mission by mission, which means each mission you play is a single multiplayer match. So whoever is hosting or whatever would need to have the missions available from single player first I suppose.

Alright. Is it specified if it's purely touch-based, or button or a mix?

Thanks for the info!

Don't think we really know at this point. They promise brand new info at Jump Festa, so there'll be more info in about a month. Jump Festa is on 21 and 22 Dec, and DQIX will also be playable there. Should be interesting. :)

If you still haven't seen the trailer, here are some pics from the site that should give a good idea of what the game is like:

i feel so pissed watching that trailer, rips off shadow of the colossus so badly, except this looks like a REALLY terrible game ='(

Heh, nice. Looks good.

I'm hoping for the gameplay mechanics to be deep enough, and the co-op to be fleshed out (full story co-op would be ideal).

I hope the teammates can be controlled by AI
I hate these handheld games that can only be enjoyed if you know 4 other people WITH a DS - WITH the same game - and HAVE time to play it with you.

I hope to god this pays homage to that amazing game.

fixed

anyway, I get the feeling this is going to play a bit like a mysterious dungeon game, with fairly random level structures and active combat, except that you have the looming threat of the colossus throwing the smack down too. I'm not a fan of that sort of thing, but I could see this being really cool to play with friends.

oh, and nice motion blur on the colossus' fist in that one shot... doing stuff I've never seen before on the DS. And the sprites look really nice, glad they're bigger than the FF12RW ones.

Yeah, I agree. If it's like CoM or the GC FFCC which were empty single player experiences compared to local multi, then I'm definitely not getting this. The DS FFCC was great as a single player experience so I hope this follows suit...

I honestly see next to no resemblance to SOTC in what I'm looking at. I mean... fighting collosi, okay, but this looks a bit too different for them to even be in the same world.

Looks fun though. Not mindblowing or anything, but fun in the sense of me wanting to play it :D

what about the glowing green weak points on certain body parts (back of the hand, & near the shoulder)? I mean, you'll obviously be attacking those spots specifically to disarm the colossus. Combine that with the design of the colossus itself, and you shouldn't be surprised people are making the comparison.... I'll bet interviews will even mention that SotC was an inspiration to the team...

Oh, I have no doubts about the inspiration of the designs, they're practically carbon copies beyond the scale. But as for the actual gameplay shown in the video, it doesn't even vaguely remind me of SotC. Running on platforms, attacking small enemies to build up to a "boss"... it just looks like a fun action RPG to me, nothing like the action platforming spectacle that was SotC.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, the part where the guy runs off the platform and onto the giant monster's hand and up it's arm is clearly based on their early ground-breaking work with that one shitty boss in Kingdom Hearts.

Assuming this is all legit until proven fake...

There are 10 variations of huge enemies, 150 including colour variations (lulz).
