Square Enix is recruiting a battle planner, facial motion designer, 2D background designer, and technical artist for its Second Development Division team for work on a new Dragon Quest project.

Here is a message from director Takeshi Uchikawa:
The Dragon Quest XI team within the Second Development Division has begun work a new project, starting up on a challenge unique to a Dragon Quest for the next generation.

The mission of this project is to “deliver a new appeal of Dragon Quest to fans worldwide.”

In order to achieve that, we are looking for new “party members” with the same desire.

The planning stages of development have wrapped up, and from this point we are entering the phase of further improving the game quality.

As a new high-definition Dragon Quest title, why not try to make a new history of Dragon Quest that moves players like never before with Yuji Horii and the development team?

We await the applications of developers who love new things!

Cool, seems like they're targeting PS5 and high end graphics again.
DQXI was a great game, my only complaint is with the final act of the game that is based on leveling up massively to beat the actual final boss.

I would love to do this. DQ is such a great series <3 Too bad this would likely require moving to Japan...

Sounds like some things never change!

Unexpectedly ambitious. I like it! Dragon Quest 11 was nice, but it felt like a pretty face for a traditional turn based RPG. Which I know is the appeal for a lot of people. Personally, im excited if they shake up the formula a bit.

That being said, maybe they are just talking about the aesthetic here and not gameplay.

One of the best games I played for PS4 (I'm playing yet... ending the first Act I guess... First Forest)

Wrong with that? If FF is no longer is going to give me Turn based RPG then I can still have that in DQ and SMT/Persona.

I know I know. I said for me personally. I like turn based too. But the dragon quest formula for me, is getting old. It would probably take more than a new aesthetic and graphic overhaul for me to be interested in the next one. But who knows, i am excited to hear more. JRPGs doing well is always a good thing :)

If they really are trying to "Monster hunter world" the series a shake up has to happen. Nothing wrong with the previous games but they just didn't just didn't resonate with people outside of japan just like traditional monster hunter games failed to as well.

I'd be down for any changes honestly except a change in art style (can't stand the look of the new movie coming out)

I REALLY hope they don't try to "shake up" DQ in an attempt to sell more - DQXI has sold more than 4 Million copies last time I saw numbers, and this is still before the game has been released on the Switch.

Well, everyone is changing their formula because “eeeeewwww turn-based is fucking old” .. I’ll take turn-based RPG over any other RPG

I agree, I honest hate people make that type of argument, FPS has been arounds games since forever but I don't see people calling that "outdated". Turn based is just different combat system, people are free not to like it but don't bring that "outdate" BS argument to me.

Those idiots that says “turn-based is old” are the same ones that can’t use their brain and just want to mash buttons🤮🤮

Same. I stopped the third act because I hesrd you basically have to redo everything that happened because you changed the past. Seems like a silly way to artificially add 15 hours or so to the game. It's a pity because otherwise it was a tight game.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Sounds like they're developing for PS5.

I really liked this game, probably on my top DQ games, I did like it more than DQVIII.

I'd like for this next dragon quest to wow me this time around. The ps4 version kinda felt like a shinier version of a ps2 game. I don't mind the turn based battles I just wish that that the boss battles would be truly a spectacle to enjoy.

Seriously it was more than a “shinier version of a ps2 game”

Really not all that great at all, these sales show me the series has stagnated. The oversees numbers barely added to the total number.

I'm assuming square is trying to expand the series not just keep selling less and less. There's many things the series can do to compete with modern jrpg and wrpg while still being dragon quest

Good news :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

This means that it will be built for nextgen platforms, including PS5, PC, and the next Switch Pro.

I used the Pep Up trick when I was like 5h in the postgame and after getting everyone to 99 in like half an hour, the rest was a breeze. Gotta love those stupid grinding strats in old-school JRPGs.

What?DQXI did very good outside Japan.
Also what "changes" are you talking about? I sure hope you don't mean it to become just another ARPG just to please Western audiences (who are most likely not going to buy it anyway because "it looks too childish")

Half a million outside of japan for a long standing franchise like dragon quest is not all that good especially if you consider the ps4's and pc's install base. I can't imagine square being impressed with dragon quest 11 oversees numbers when an new IP like octopath traveler absolutely destroyed it outside of japan. Games like persona 5 also did much better.

The west likes turn base games but it seems the series is failing to reach people who should be enjoy it. But who knows maybe the switch version will save the day

I kinda felt like they did the bare minimum for a dragon quest game after you take a look at FF15 or Kingdom Hearts 3.

Is that why DQ felt like complete game compare to FFXV because the did “bare minimum”? Are you serious? Only thing FFXV has over DQXI is bigger budget.

That mostly because both Nintendo and Atlus market the crap out of two those games, especially Atlus. Once their games comes close to release they release trailer after trailer, almost daily and the mange to games like Catherine, puzzle game with crazy story sell well in west. It became selling Atlus game before P5.

SE in other hand barely market DQXI for west. They don’t do much unless it’s FF or KH.

From the boss battles , epic summons , to the size of just towns and the number of people in them, to the infiltrating bases , to all of the side stuff/quests if we just compare that ff15 to dragon quest Xi then yes dq11 does feel like the bare minimum even if FF15 was incomplete.

I didn't talk about the number of towns the game had but the size of the town and how many people were in them plus the content you would have available in them.

So did DQXI, it had plenty of extra side quests and Casino and horse racing. Only thing FFXV has over DQXI is they much bigger budget.

There was chocobo racing and a pinball machine in FF15, but I can see that nothing is going to convince you so I'm out.
