Stadia to close its game studios

Jade is getting screwed everywhere.
Pretty interesting choice of words considering the main reason why Raymond originally came to people's attention, lol.

Stadia always sounded like a bad business idea, but I never used it so I don't really know the reality of it.

I really like the streaming tech and it works perfectly at my place so this sucks.
Every online service goes belly-up sooner or later. In this case it's sooner because Google, but you really can't count on a streaming service for long time reliability.
Your money basically always goes in a void.

I guess the only reliable way would be to stream from a server you physically own, using software you own.

Online is just not reliable. Not sure why people think it is.

Shoulda stuck with Motive.
Im sure Motive is going to get another interesting project soon.

Leave UBI to not make a game for EA, leave EA to not make a game for Stadia leave Stadia to not make a game for whom next Kojima going down?

Maybe I'm a casual? Honestly, the ability to almost instantly load up a new game without having to worry about downloading and installing or managing drive space is fantastic and I think something any gamer would appreciate. Gaming with Stadia is just so seamless and easy. It's a fantastic platform and I would probably be all on board it if I didn't already spend a bunch of money on a gaming Pc last year (and if there wasn't a question about its long term viability).
If you spent quite a dough on a gaming PC, you're definitely not a casual neither care that much about Stadia.

Who would have gessed? Right?

On paper stadia could be perfect. If they are closing down the game studios, soon the service will be axed.

Game streaming will appeals to casuals I agree. But it has to be packaged in a way that will appeal to them. A streaming service of pure games, IMO, will find limited target audience. It will be a hard sell among the gamer crowd who would rather buy hardware, and too expensive for the casual crowd who only really play console-type games occasionally.

I was thinking of something similar to this.

Agreed, casuals would care about it only if:

1- Have a monthly fee to access all its content, even better if it's bundled to other services a la Amazon Prime;

2- Can be used from any device, from smart tvs to mobile, and support existing controllers.

It wasn't streaming what killed Stadia, it was the wrong business model after all.

Netflix seems to do alright at least. With Geforce Now you're playing you regular Steam games so that's where my money will go from here on. Tried Control on GFN yesterday, 1080p with DLSS at highest settings in both gfx and raytracing, there is no fps counter but it felt smooth. 15ms ping to the server, that's alright. I hope it'll stay alive but if it isn't I won't have lost anything besides the $5/month.

Probably the first casualty of MS purchase of Zenimax, because let's face it, a major competitor in the streaming space spending $7.5b on studio acquisitions would have left Stadia's management thinking how worthless having a mere couple of nascent studios in their ecosystem really is. And a reminder to Google that trying to get into this line was going to involve a lot more investment than they might be comfortable with.
The Bethesda purchase is already paying off. Sometimes the best way to kill competition is to make the price of entry too expensive.

Google should have built a console to rival the PS5 and Series X instead of this cloud gaming thing. They're richer than god and could have built an extremely powerful box and gave consumers the choice of playing the games on their new hardware via disk or digital download, again just like we can on PS5 and Series X.

Instead they went down the cloud gaming route which just doesn't appeal to the masses from what I can gather.

Google aren't richer than Microsoft

I mean Google needed to spend billions just to keep up, expecially when creating a new console with components and new first party games.

Well I've learned something new today, I always assumed Amazon and then Google were the richest companies worldwide. I'm sure I read that Microsoft slipped down to third but it was a few years ago (I know nothing about business either)

Any 15 year old would know this was not going to end well. I will never understand how those big companies make such big mistakes. Is like everyone inside is afraid to say the king is naked.

Honestly with the pandemic it's just high time Google look to utilize the technology to make high school distance learning work.
high schools all have chromebooks but CAD and Digvis classes need things like Autodesk suite, Unity/Unreal SDK's and Photoshop/Krita all of which won't run on a chromebook
give those as a cloud app in your enterprise and you'll be soaring.

Just proves if a talented person is going to X company, does not mean anything. Especially in the game industry.

Jade is getting screwed everywhere. Didn't EA cancel her Star Wars project there as well?

Her position is to produce and since leaving Ubisoft she has produced nothing. It will be interesting if she gets another top position, but she does meet the criteria.(wink)

It also proves that trillion dollar companies getting into gaming is near meaningless unless they have the patience to stick it out for years. Amazon will be following their lead shortly.

Google doesn't make products though, they create apps that steal and catalog our data. Stadia wasn't popular enough to get anything useful out of us so top brass quickly gave it the axe.

I didnt think it was necessary to translate the title of one of the most recognized books on history, but alas: "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" if that makes any sense.
In what section would i look for that book?
I am usually not buying in foreign languages. (that includes english)

I have said for years and years Amazon is the next big player. ALL they have to do is be patient they already have the hardware and service available. Hell, all they have to do is add a GP like service to their Prime service at ZERO cost with games and idk, maybe 100+ million subs day one. if i was them, I also said they should offer Ubisoft basically the brinks truck. They have a deep bench when it comes to GAAS and ttiles sitting in the freezer that would easily catapult them up.

"We continue investing" just not in the form of games.

With things as they are, what is the motivation anyone would have to go Stadia instead of say X-Cloud or even PS Now?

I guess it is not obvious that getting into the gaming industry is not that easy.

Surprised that Stadia lasted this long. Expected Google to pull the plug way earlier.

I guess there's been a slight input delay from HQ.

That sucks, with google's deepmind AI they have some of the best assets to really push games that feel next generation. They need better talent to manage their gaming department.

Stadia should have been global at launch with a focus on Indies. One or two heavy hitting AAAs to start with yeah... But Indies. Indies get you places.

Stadia is not going anywhere, folks. Google is most likely transitioning it to a pure white label B2B offering in which they offer their streaming services directly to publishers. Might even work.

Yeah, in their last financial report, Sega announced they will double dip on digital, Esport and streaming. I think Judgment's exclusivity on Stadia was not meant to bother Steam but Amazon Luna(Windows). I think Judgment, Valkyria 4 will be ported on Luna too.

In fact, i think a Sega Channel could be an option on Luna (Prime Video model) or Stadia.(like Ubi+) Even if it would be much more plausible on Luna since it's easier (windows... which means you can also sell the game without streaming to millions of customers) and because Amazon already uses that business model with Prime..

Weird, guess it wasn't interesting enough for data brokers. :/ Or maybe they are going for pure profit, promising large developers data about your whole gaming life and psychology in exchange for exclusives?
