Stage6 ruled, but there are tons of copycat sites around. Just do some creative googling

and they're all tied to stage6, unless you could tell me one that's not. that would be cool.

Well .... I did a little digging and a lot of the copycats are indeed pulling DIVX stuff on Thursday. However at least 3 are not (one I pretty much caught up on a few TV shows on) affected according to them. However these sites are almost 100% piracy related so I sure as hell will not post them. Like I said though, creative Googling is your friend.

After Thursday we'll see and I will post again if anyone still cares.

ARGH!!! I really really like stage6. Good long quality videos but crappy search engine but still great none the less!!! Why oh why!!!

What other high-def divx providers are there? As long as someone else comes along to take there place, it's all good.

They just had to put up some ads, morons.

That would have covered maybe 5% of their bandwidth bill :) When you serve up high quality (and HD) video with a distributed backbone to handle load - you're going to pay through the ass.

No screw you.

Stage6 was awesome and you suck.

My point is that it's people like you who killed Stage 6. Wasting bandwidth on pirated shit.

Whereas people who used it for legitimate means get screwed.

all 10 of them.

unless of course, you count us anime viewers.

I watched most of Heroes and some Jericho on it *cries*
Also I got all my youtube videos in better quality up there...

It's funny though that they don't mention the hack in one single sentence

In commemoration of stage 6 I've decided to watch all 13 Firefly episodes and serenity on my day off. Every single one back to back.

I'm gonna miss you stage6 :(

I uploaded about 300 720p videogame trailer http://www.stage6.com/GamesCathedral I can´t say that I´m happy about that decision. But yeah the quality was awesome and all the other alternatives just can´t compete with stage6 yet cuz server capacity and bandwith are hella expensive if you provide a quality that high. I mean stage6 had a file size limitation of 2gb(!).

Anyway, R.I.P. Stage6 http://youtube.com/watch?v=iYEM68HIm0Y yeah a music video from youtube, at least one thing that it´s good for.

I found a website that could be a worthy stage6 replacement in the future:

http://blip.tv

You can upload in whatever format you want: divx, quicktime, wmv ..etc. It seems you can also upload mp3s to stream and download too.

It will playback the video as flash by default but you can choose to playback and download in the format and quality the video was uploaded in.

There's sod all content at the moment, but once more people catch on it will grow.

One video that may be of interest is one featuring gaf's favorite tech presenter Veronica Belmont doing some yoga squats:

I have no sympathy for them. They're stupid enough to get hacked and lose everything, then they take a week to get back online, then 2 weeks later they shut down. This all in the same month I decide to make videos and I choose stage6 as the host, wow...

Too bad there's no good alternative. Everything is shitty flash or slightly bigger shitty flash.

Vimeo is ok, but they have 500MB/week upload limit, lawlz.

There's a recent article revealing that Stage6 is closing because of internal fighting rather than money problems:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/02/26/serious-drama-and-lots-of-stupidity-behind-stage6-shutdown/

Monthly bandwidth costs were about $1million a month.

Divx were earning about $16 million per year from Yahoo for including their 'toolbar' with the DivX player. An estimated $8 million of that came from Stage6 downloads in 2006 with that number rising year on year.

Stage6 was to be sold off to private investors but Divx (who had the final say in the matter) canceled the deal at the last minute, causing to Divx CEO Jordan Greenhall and most of the stage6 team to quit.

Divx then approached Jordan Greenhall to come back to go ahead with the original deal, but he refused.

So then Divx decides to close Stage6 down.

Re: Blip.tv

When you choose to playback a Divx file it uses the same Divx player that Stage6 uses.

So.....Greenhall will come back with a new Stage6?

Looks like it just went down. I was able to download 40 GB worth of stuff between last night and this afternoon. Still, I'll miss it. :|

Edit: Actually, it looks like it's back up. Only a matter of time before it goes down permanently.

I really hope the current issues aren't the end end, because I just started downloading the first half of a concert, and was about to start the second half. First half is still downloading fine, but of course now I can't grab part two. *shakes fist in air*

Hin a few months Stage6 wouldn't have been very special anyway.

Nice big video files that'll play on my PS3, Xbox 360, etc. that are downloaded at the click of a button, versus unknown quality videos possibly in Flash that aren't easily downloaded, which also exist on a website that was FAR stricter about what could be put up, are two completely different things.

(And no, I'm not talking blatant piracy. Hell, I was banned from YouTube for putting up a few music videos and commercials from a Japanese music artist that I like.)

It's back! At least for now. I wonder if the mass downloading that is taking place is just too much for the poor servers. *heh*

It was idiots who wasted the service for those damn tv shows and animes rips and that killed stage6. Damn low level warez idiots.

fuuuk, it's close to dawn here and I nearly fried my pc downloading videos like maaad. Too little space on this puny laptop of mine :(

I did manage however to get gems such as "the brain that wouldn't die" and "santa claus conquers the martians"...

Stage6 was a great source for Japanese TV shows, since it's hard sometimes to find active torrents for a show you might stumble upon long after it came out.

So, I'm guess I'm one of those "low level warez idiots" you're talking about.
