There's a recent article revealing that Stage6 is closing because of internal fighting rather than money problems:

http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/02/26/serious-drama-and-lots-of-stupidity-behind-stage6-shutdown/

Monthly bandwidth costs were about $1million a month.

Divx were earning about $16 million per year from Yahoo for including their 'toolbar' with the DivX player. An estimated $8 million of that came from Stage6 downloads in 2006 with that number rising year on year.

Stage6 was to be sold off to private investors but Divx (who had the final say in the matter) canceled the deal at the last minute, causing to Divx CEO Jordan Greenhall and most of the stage6 team to quit.

Divx then approached Jordan Greenhall to come back to go ahead with the original deal, but he refused.

So then Divx decides to close Stage6 down.

Re: Blip.tv

When you choose to playback a Divx file it uses the same Divx player that Stage6 uses.

So bandwidth = 12 a year

16-12 = 4

16-8 = 8

8 > 4

Stage six was losing them money.

That somewhat explains it. Besides, I think Divx as a media format is on the way out after its peak a few years back. I think all that ego got in the way of each other which meant that not only did they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the form of the 'standard video format', but the 'video sharing/posting site' too.

FUCK!!
im not going to resort to low quality flv videos
Divx ftw, plus i got to download straight out of stage6 and had a fucking sweet ~600kb's download rate. it was my ps3's best friend

T__T

at a limit of 2gigabyte, 1920*1080, no time length limit, stage6 was phenomenally ahead of its time.

when i first saw crysis in its true power and true quality, it was through stage6. without it, i would've had to wait for years until i got to build a new PC and played the damn thing.

when i watched clips of metroid prime at 480p, supreme quality at 60 FUCKING FRAMES - essentially the actual quality you see if you were playing it yorself in front of you - it made my jaw drop like no other.

stage6 will be missed...

...and i hope those stupid execs live to regret their egotrips forever!!! >:((((

edit: oh and vimeo, dailymotion, etc. are only marginally better than youtube in quality, and far far far inferior in user contribution/clip library to both youtube and stage6. btw, i'm talking user-contributed gameplay clips and trailers, not silly anime and that crap.

Sounds like there is a little bit of hope that Stage6 might be returning since Yahoo and Google are both making offers to buy it. I mean, if they are shutting it down anyways, why not cash in?

Seems strange that Microsoft hasn't made an offer as well?
I know MS is doing everything it can to up Google, stage6 would be a good step for them.

Yes, but it was close to making money just from Yahoo.

Mozilla/firefox makes most of their money from having a Google tool in the top right of their browser.

As stage6 grew it could have easily got better sponsorship and advertising to cover additional costs.

Edit: Why is it still up?

So I typed in 'Stage6' into my browser for some kind of closure, to give the beautiful corpse one sweet kiss on the forehead and move on towards a dark, empty future.

But it....lives? What is this madness?

It's up, but none of the videos work for me. :/

They probably took the forums down because there was a person spamming with some very sick pornographic images: sex involving defecation, corpses and Pokemon characters!

Real corpses?

Nah, there was one image that had a woman painted up to look like a George Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead' Zombie with blueish skin.

But there were a few images that looked very real, such as one that had a dead baby with its intestines spewing out. With no one to mod the forum they made the sensible choice and shut down the forums.

The comments section of every video on that Veho site is getting spammed to hell with people demanding Stage6 come back. It's both funny and sad :(

Has no where else been created yet? I am sure people would flock to the first stage6 like site the pops up.

I doubt something even close to Stage6 could be created so soon. I mean, that site was practically perfect. The speeds were awesome too.

It also introduced me to Hajime no Ippo and other anime, that place was heaven.

I got into Stage6 late but my goodness it was frigging Amazing. Wished I had found it sooner so I would amass more. So much I wanted but atleast grabbed some essential concerts, NASA and other Space crap and weird shit like US public service announcements.

Here's one to keep an eye on: www.vreel.net

The site doesn't open until May 6th, but they're promising initial upload caps at 800MB (may get adjusted later) and they're using the same DiVX player that Stage6 used. What's really interesting is that they thanked DiVX on the front page, so even though it's not officially affiliated with the DiVX team, it seems they had some input on things.

Thanks for the info.

I was surprised to hear that it wasn't because of any legal issues why stage6 went down.

It was all because of bandwith

How long before the MPAA comes knocking on their door? For the vreel site anyway

Nice. I want as many recorded live music performances on there as possible. Thanks to stage6, I got The Mars Volta @ Lowlands 2004, two White Stripes performances and a bunch of just random live songs.

That, and porn. Veoh is pretty shitty, so I hope this turns out well.

I've been using ninjavideo for my Lost eps, and it's working great. Same quality as Stage6. Not much stuff there yet, though.

Yeah I've noticed Ninja and also quicksilverscreen have somehow found a way to keep content on Divx player (Although having to host their vdeos somewhere else).

Ninja was working awesome for me until they made a bunch of changes and changed the whole set-up, now videos take an eternity to load.

Thanks for those sites. Going to check them out.
