Star Citizen First Person Shooter Reveal

I know of ARMA. I own it, in fact.

That's why I said "this game". To me ARMA is a whole different beast than this, but it might just be my first impression. Is this game really THAT tactical and realistic? (or as realistic as a futuristic shooter could be).

Because even in other pseudo-realistic titles like older Battlefield titles most people wouldn't use that kind of speech.

This game is aiming at ARMA levels of "realism" according to the devs. So I think it is kinda appropriate. Obviously cringe inducing for a lot of people to hear live in front of a camera. Much like all demo banter.

The theme is irrelevant. There are clans that use the same kind of communication in Planetside 2. I'm not saying EVERYONE will be doing this, not even close. But it's not unheard of and it will likely be the case for some clans.

Gotcha. Didn't think this game was aiming at such kind of realism.

Fair enough. Still somewhat off-putting to see the people so involved. I guess even some people playing COD games play like that, so... :P

Anyway, never mind my comment. It just bothered me and didn't know they were also trying to aim at this kind of tactical gameplay.

It'd be less cringe worthy if it was legit radio etiquette (ala RP ARMA servers) and not the typical gamer rehash of what they remember the guys in Black Hawk Down or Generation Kill sounding like.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that wasn't awk as fuck.

Visually it looks stunning. All the tacticool speak is really off-putting though. I mean, who will ever play this like while having such kind of convo? I expect more "lol killed u biiiiitch" speak rather than "tango down!" and stuff like that.

It's very typical in marketing videos, to drum up the tacticool aspect and how "realistic" it is, we know the truth is that in public servers the reality is a bit different.

Wow, wasn't expecting the fps side of it to be this far into development.

Quick WebM from the initial archive of the demo, showing first/third person 'immersive' motion helmet camera. One thing pointed out in the demo was the breathing effect on the visor, added both for realism and an indication of stamina. They really are going all out with the details.

Unmute the audio to hear the commentary.

Oddly, their jargon and tone wasn't awkward or off-putting to me in the least. It was the stilted recitation that was rehearsed either too much or not enough. They didn't sound like they would be speaking that way at all if they weren't conducting a demo on-stage.

Keep in mind much of the audience right now is of this variety:

CIG is just catering to the spergy, hardcore players with more money than sense.

That being said, the FPS actually looked decent. Not something that could dethrone any of the good ones, but I like the zero-g especially now that Shattered Horizon is dead.

Another clip discussing aim from the hip vs iron sights. Guns shoot where they are aimed while held, rather than a centered crosshair. Unmute for commentary. Edit: Dictator93's on it, ha.

This is the thing that makes me very, very skeptical about how this is going to play. I know they're trying to penalize hip fire with this system, but unlocking the gun's aim from the camera controls basically makes hip fire pointless. How the hell do you control where the gun's aiming? Is that even possible?

Also, in no way did I even begin to ask for a first-person shooter component from Star Citizen. Jesus, this game isn't going to be out until 2042 at this rate.

(also also I can't stand watching Star Citizen videos shown to crowds, because they cheer and gasp at literally everything)

So now it's a space sim / racing game / FPS. They'd better staff the hell up!

the FPS module will be out early next year.. i think he said January or March in the live stream but that can change. most of the work being done is by contractors with supervision by CIG

Oh wow, that's way more people than I expected!

I first bought this when I thought it would be just a space simulator, now it has all kinds of things...

I believe the FPS mode was discussed before the original crowdfunding campaign was over. They even showed videos of a planetside prototype but there weren't any weapons.

Well this should be interesting.

They've been throwing around the concept of having an FPS component as if it were a simple add-on. There's developers that dedicate themselves entirely to the genre and still sometimes don't get it right. Not at all convinced Star Citizen can deliver in this area but we'll see soon I guess.

CS came out in 1999.

On a more serious note, there is no "right" in fps. Aside from solid hitreg and physics, it's mostly a matter of taste.

Guess so. I just didn't expect it to be this good looking, hahah. To be honest though, I never paid much attention to anything other than the spaceship driving aspects (which is the reason why I love Elite Dangerous so much as well and why I play it a lot).

I did.
How else do you want to hijack space ships? Pressing a button and getting a cutscene?

You will be able to board other people's space ships and take it over if you succeed. A gunfight within a space ship that's flying around.

(I'm not kidding. This is what they are implementing.)

I noticed hints of 'AR' being used to sorta indicate where the gun is aiming, but you'd think AR would essentially render iron sights obsolete unless you want really precise aim, such as a sniper rifle. Of course, if you really wanted to go for realism, headshots would be entirely pointless, it would be more effective to just aim for the center of mass, which doesn't take as much precision.

Still, interesting to see what they'll do with this thing.

glad i backed this. Can't wait to play this. i really just wish they would fix the animations we have with the hangar modules...its freaking terrible. the jump makes no sense and there is a very janky feel to everything from the walking to the camera movement.

They're fixing that next year. The FPS module has it's own animations but Chris said they're redoing all the animations early next year.

Yeah. The main difference is that you don't have the weapon shouldered and properly in your grip if you aren't in "ironsight stance" so the recoil is much higher.

True, though a simulated laser pointer would do wonders for quick aim burst fire. Iron sights are for situations where the user isn't in a hurry and wants more precision and less recoil in the case of an enemy encounter, less ideal when you're not using them and want to get shots off immediately, as the time it takes to prepare iron sights instead of shooting might mean the difference between life and death.

What does AR mean?
'Augmented Reality', basically the visor doing stuff like the HUD or simulating a laser pointer, in this case.

It looks pretty (as expected) but the movement doesn't seem great to me =/ We'll see how it feels though. And if the Arena Commander module has shown anything it's that systems like that can get completely revised still.

Its really cool that they're picking up pace with the modules and honestly their visuals for interiors are awesome (including the planetside stuffs we saw not too long ago). The really like their artistic vision of the cities and interiors, reminds me of mass effect 2 corridors. But it always looks a bit... unstable everytime they showcase it, i know everyone will jump on the pre-alpha argument, but i mean, is it the right engine for the job? Is the code an unoptimized mess because of satellite studio contracts? They are probably running the demo on huge PC setups too but its laggy/stiff/tearing/sound glitches/texture loading problems/etc. I kinda fear that we'll end up with a Deux ex scenario where any big PC build struggled to run it smootly for years to come due to optimization.

FPS Mass effect and space wing commander rolled in one, i really hope they pull it all off and every module excels, like a reason to play fps in this game over other fps games out there.

One last thing if SC fans can clear something for me, the arena right now is on the more side of being epic sci-fi but really unrealistic like a cracked moon full of lava.. does someone know if they plan to sober things up for the persistant universe ?
