Star Fox: Assualt - Feb. 1 Rental Thread

Let's see, what else. On-foot missions are surprisingly fast-paced. The first time you start getting hit on-foot Slippy screams out "I don't like seeing Fox like this!"
:lol
She had a british accent in SF Adventures because Rare is, well, a british developer. Guess they chose to keep that accent.

THIS IS HOW I FEEL
-The control isn't as tight or intuitive as Starfox 64
-Instead of releasing A to shoot a charged shot you have to tap A again
-you have to hold down R and stop moving to aim with the landmaster
-The level design doesn't seem as good or as interesting
-Too much fluff, too. Too much dialogue between levels. No planet select screen to my knowledge.
-It just isnt satisfying like SF64 was. If both games were released with the same graphics, 64 would DESTROY this one.

Small budget EAD could have made this game much better than Namco in 1/4th the time.
I'm easy to please and I really don't like this game.

I haven't tried it yet. SF has always been SP only for me.

I think she had the same accent in SFA, but I can't remember, and I even beat the game.

So, how are the land missions? Fun? Tolerable? Tedious?
Tolerable.

First off, I don't dig the part where you're roaming around with a tank and you're supposed to shoot bogeys off your team mate's tails. I mean, seriously, I'm in a tank, they're in Arwings and I'm supposed to protect them?

Note: The following paragraph relates to DUAL STICK SETUP only...

The vertical sensitivity needs to be dumbed down. As it stands, right now I'll try to aim to the right and end up shooting far right sky. Still can't get used to the concept of using R to shoot and A to switch weapons, but that's due to my choice in control scheme (Type B). Speaking of control scheme, it'd sure be nice if I could change them mid-mission in order to discover the best one.

Type A puts camera and movement on the Analog Stick, with R switching between camera and movement, while A shoots.

Type B maps movement to the analog, camera to C-Stick and fire to R.

Type C throws camera control onto the analog stick, A as your main action button and R as movement. I imagine that holding down R moves you in the direction Fox is currently facing, but eh.

My initial impression is that on-foot is alright, but the rail shooter stuff is so much better.

Rented it! I'll post more impressions later... but a few things being 3 missions in..

DO NOT SET THE CONTROLL TO "DUEL STICK"! It's far too buttery and fast to be effective, the ground missions just plain aren't as fun with it too ... stick to Single Stick/Standard control, it's plenty fast enough to handle everything goin' on with all the jumping/siderolling abilities fox has... (it's obvious that the standard controlls are what they've spent these last years polishing)
Those that appreciate good arcade controlls will love the standard mode, the whole game controlls very nicely.

There *IS* banking/tilting, you just pull in the left button before clicking it into a roll ... and so far it helps to be able to bank on some missions to get to items and such.

I started the difficulty at 'silver' and the challenge seems appropriate for the first levels.. but I'm gonna go ahead and move it to 'gold' ... so for those looking for a good challenge do the same.

I'm really enjoying it so far (I didn't like the 64 version at all), especially after I switched my controlls back over to 'standard'...
The game's pretty, classically arcade, and buttery smooth I'll post more later.

Everything about 64 is just so much better, though. The levels are laid out better, the game is more straighforward and pick-up-and-play, the control is much tighter and much more intuitive, and the pacing is just leaps and bounds ahead.

I don't understand what it is people like about this Namco/Nintendo f' up.

I believe Olimario 100%. No, 200%.

That's exactly how I felt at E3. I guess Nintendo just doesn't care about the Star Fox franchise, they've called in scabs for two installments in a row now.

And Star Fox 64 was my favorite N64 title...

The other thing I forgot to mention is weight. It seems Nintendo EAD is the only company that knows that more realistic weight/momentum makes for better control. I feel like I'm controlling a cursor in SFA... In sf64 it felt more like I would imagine an arwing would.

Namco was a bad choice.

Considering Tedd is often times pessimistic, I'll take his comments with a grain of salt.

Oli's on the other hand kind of concern me, but since everyone else seems to really enjoy the game, I still have hope.

I mean, it at least looks like the N64 predecessor. Whether or not it plays that good is another matter.

Olimario always goes doom and gloom over a game when he's playing it only after a short time, metroid prime2, RE4 and now this.

He had similar impressions about RE4 and MP2?

Nevermind then.

RE4? Since when? I loved the demo and I loved the final game.
Mp2? Only the demo, and even then it wasn't play mechanics. I always held out hope for the final version.

Don't talk about things you have no clue about. Starfox Assault reeks of "we just don't get it".

I'm really diggin' the arcade feel of this game, it's traditionally arcade no new reinvention of the shooting genra, but great fun.

I've played the 2nd mission (tank) 3 times over for fun, before I move onto others ... I'll hold my judgement seeing as how I'm so early in...

but set the difficulty high, stick with the standard controls and go have fun, it all feels like starfox.

please discuss SFA in the context of Ace Combat 4/5, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Rez.

Eh, must have confused you for someone else in the RE4 thread then, i recall someone was always bitching about how MP2 sucked because he couldnt beat a certain boss, telling him the strategy to beat him over and over and still not getting it :p

sammy's right, standard controls are better than dual stick. It still doesn't feel "right" though.

This is why I HATE multiple control options in games... you dabble in each one and start to realize their respective strengths/weaknesses and realize there is no quentesential/optimal option....

It's like adjusting video-options on a PC-game ... between performance/quality you're never ever satisfied and keep quiting out of the game to 'tweak and tinker' with the settings completely losing any emmersiveness of the game...

I've always respected Capcom and Nintendo for avoiding this .... They find ONE option and polish it to the best of their abilities ... true it may not always be the best, but it keeps you from seeing the advantage of another option ... You accept it and stay in the game..

I just got back from picking it up. $7 for a game rental? Jesus, has it always been that much? If this is the cost of no late fees, no thanks Blockbuster. I'll take my due dates elsewhere.
It has been $6.99 for a very long long time now. If it was cheaper the last time you rented, then Blockbuster really doesn't care about losing yoiur business (since you don't rent that much).

$7 for what is essentially a 2-week rental is fine with me.

I blieve olimario. If there is one ninfan here who goes out of his way to really, really like a nintendo game, even overlooking some glaring deficiencies, its olimario.

If he says its not good, it simply isn't.

He also said that Kirby Air Ride was good. Take that as you will.

in contrast, here's where it all started ... the dawn of polygonal gameplay (nintendo was there...):

Elite, Firebird Software, 1985

Mercenary, 1985, Novagen

S.T.U.N. Runner, 1986, Atari

etc, etc, etc....

Starfox, Nintendo, 1993. Yep, Nintendo really leading the vanguard there...

Just to add to that list, Sega had Virtua Racing on the Genesis in 1992.

I really dislike just about everything this game offers.
Starfox 64 is leaps and bounds ahead of this on every level except graphics and audio.

So, are you saying that Assault is beyond suck? Because, you know I thought that 64 was a TURD compared to the original. Not as bad as Mario Kart 64 compared to Super Mario Kart, but still. Then again, all this talk about SF64 has made me purchase the game from eBay, so I can play it again before Assault arrives.

My mistake. They released it in the arcades in 1992 to debut their Model 1 Arcade Board. I mixed up the years.

Anyway, I just came back from playing SFA for 2 hours. I must say that it has blown me away. My expectations were low and it surpassed them completely. It takes a few minutes to get oriented to the flight especially if you have played SF 64. Everything feels a little bit more loose but once you get the feel for it, everything is perfect. The landmaster controsl are okay at best. You can't strafe sadly and I feel that it was really needed here, especially when there are several enemies near you. The ground combat is a little bit better especially if you are using the default single control stick setup. Holding L and then hitting the control stick either left or right will allow you to roll in the desired direction. Continue holding L and you can strafe. The weapon selection is rather odd as well because you use the C-stick to switch weapons so if you need a certain weapon in a pinch, you have to repeatedly slam the C-stick until you reach the desired weapon, all while taking damage. The best part of the game IMO is the levels where you have to multi-task many different objectives. I'll be fighting inside a base trying to take out the designated targets, while Falco and Krystal are out in space. One of them will call for help so I have to jump into my Arwing and fly out into open space and help them. There is also a unique aspect to the third level that takes what I just said to the next level but I feel no need to spoil it here. ;) Well, I am off to go play a little bit more. Even though the game has its flaws, and the VA is worse than Baten Kaitos, it still surpassed my expectations, which weren't all that high to begin with.

My local Blockbuster doesn't have it yet. :-/

*Is sad*

Hopefully they'll get it in soon. It sounds decent from most peoples' impressions.

If you can, check Hollywood Video instead. Blockbuster charged me $7.53 to rent the game. They jacked up the price. Anyway, the game really is a blast to play. It's not going to win any awards and I really wish they would have polished the ground and landmaster combat but it is a downright fun game to play. Especially the levels that have tons of things that are going on at the same time. I just wish the game had been more like SF 64.

I think they made Krystal's breasts larger this go round, but I really, really don't want confirmation on that.

Thanks, but I live in South Jersey. No Hollywood Videos around here that I know of.

It's inevitable now that you mentioned it. Someone's gonna post pics for comparison.

I finsihed the game at Bronze difficulty in roughly three hours.

The problems that Starfox Assault has are completely unrelated to the "no tilting" issue or the more retarded whining about physics/momentum ("It's not how I imagine it should move"? WTF?). Arwing controls much much smoother in the rail-shooting segments because the game runs at a very gorgeous 60 fps. In the 30 fps "battlefield" areas, it seems much more similar to Starfox 64 since those seem to be 30 fps.

My major complaint would be that there's only like 3 rail-shooting stages out of 10 total stages. All the rest are battlefields, and some of them are very-heavy on the ground-battling. This game needs to stay in the Arwing, but too often it has you doing less entertaining crap. There's probably a hundred and one things to unlock, but since you have to get good scores in every stage to do it then I doubt I will have much interest in repeating the lamer battlefields at a higher difficulty for a better score.

The game is a fine rental, but I can't see myself wanting to own it just for the handful of polished rail segments.

Wait, I thought that in amost all the tank missions, you can switch into your arwing?

I've got two images just waiting to be posted. Come one, you know you really do wanna compare the breasts of a cartoon animal.

just rented a copy from blockbuster. they didn't actually have it on the shelves; you might try asking a clerk if you don't see it. though hearing now that there are only three rail-shooting stages, i have no desire to play it. all this genre muddling is a natural continuation of starfox 64's thoroughly unnecessary free-flight segments, and i'd like to preemptively voice my disapproval.

I wonder: do you mean that there are only 3 stages that are nothing BUT rail shooting?

You know, after consideration, I realized...I don't need to rent Starfox Assault. Hell, I don't even need it period! PISS OFF I SAY

$20 or bust, baby!

I think you should complete the game on ultra hard first before giving a negative opinion about the game :|
