Star Ocean: The Last Hope Official thread

Checked out the stream, and I'm a little bit irritated about something character related. Spoil yourself at your leisure, I suppose. Probably massive spoilers for it, though.

Apparently, Faize leaves the party. God dammit.

The robot beat the game!

Luckily I have no idea what's going on as I went back into the stream too late, so some surprises are still left. As a Star Ocean plot, I actually kinda like it.

Some of these later fights took forever. Seems like things are going to drag if you don't make use of the game's stuff to increase your damage output. I don't think I saw him link a single skill into a another one in all the time I've watched this.

I bet this guy is going to sleep for a few days straight now. :lol

honest question: why do you watch it all?

I was just curious. I've never minded spoilers as much as some (most?) people, so I usually watch bits and pieces of things like this to see some things in the final version of games.

can someone with the game please tell me if there really is a black border around the screen during gameplay
I really hope not. That shit drove be bonkers in Penny Arcade Adventures :( Same with most widescreen Wii games (notably RE4 and Metroid Prime 3).

impressions after 2 hours:

i like the pacing so far, something which i usually don't like in jrpgs. not that i've played that many of them but in this one as opposed to many others you can move along pretty quickly if you choose to do so.

the graphics are pretty meh. too much bloom/light on the first planet. inside the ship looks really sterile. characters animate reasonably well but convey little emotion on their faces. the rez during battles, is as reported bad.

the story is interesting in it's overarching form. i like the idea of space travel, finding a new planet for the human race. in terms of writing though it's very average japanese fare. totally unrealistic characters (people working at the highest level of the government acting like 7 year old children, ughhh.. welch), stupid story elements (ship drops out of warp and literally plummets straight down, what about inertia or momentum?) and logic defying stuff in general (you shoot at the first alien you encounter and despite being a bug it's got some shield that stops ranged energy weapons but you can cut them up no probs with your witches hat looking sword).

it is fun though. i think it's the pacing and the general atmosphere combined with the quick and fun action focussed combat that makes me want to keep playing.

p.s the movement also lacks a certain degree of polish, can be a little bit hard to move exactly where you want to go especially in cramped spaces. camera is also pretty bad, i often end up disappearing coz i'm too close to the character or just plain rotate it around too much to see where i am going.

I'm sorry if it was mentioned before, but are you stuck with edge on the field or can you switch characters?

definitely no black borders around the screen in the overworld or in battle. japanese version.

this game is hard too, i might restart at the easy level.

Man, I wanted to pick it up today but all the shops I went to in my area were sold out. I'll just have to wait a week since I ordered from PLay-asia (Asian version). WAY cheaper than buying it actually. Saved 3500 yen or so which is a lot more money if converted from USD.

There so is a border.

I thought the Galaxy level is quite easy to be honest, are you taking advantage of the exp bonus on the bonus board ?

The game has crashed twice on me also right after a battle on both occasions.

Hard in what sense??...you where able to reach a part where ennemies where stronger too fast?...you avoided some battles to reach said area?...you can't equip buffs or whatever yet?...

I'm sure this depends upon the level of overscan on your display.

in the first area of the game i was dying on regular enemies quite frequently. might just be a case of me sucking but i like to go through games at my own pace and if i start to get stuck or have trouble i drop the difficulty.

@jinko, my game doesnt have the border. im playing on a 32 inch hdtv in 720p.

not sure about overscan..?

I won't be able to play this for at least three weeks now because my 360 RRoD'd. :(

Not that I'll have the time to with Ar Tonelico II & DQ5 to play.

131k first day Japan? That has to be up there with the best first day showings for 360.

Wheres the pics of the lines and stuff like we saw with Tales of Vesperia? This did twice the first day sales of that.

I'm pleased to be wrong about my earlier assertion that SO4 won't beat Blue Dragon. It still may not, but with the best first-day sales of any 360 title in Japan so far, it's well on its way.

Yes, Blimblim 60fps is a MUST for games with action based combat that require timing.

I'm glad they didn't fold and made the battles 30fps just so the resolution is 720p in battles. Watch a vid in 30fps and then watch another 60fps, you'll see a huge difference in the animations. Everything is much more smoothly and fluid. After SO3's 60fps battles, going to 30fps for SO4 would've been a HUGE disappointment.

60fps>resolution for me.

NOOoOoOooo

I want this but I haven't beaten any of the games I'm playing right now and I don't let myself play more than 2 or 3 games at a time, it's a waste of money in my eyes.

:(

Even more interesting will be seeing Xbox360 numbers for this week.

After seeing the first 10 minutes on gamersyde (not watching those streams), I don't know how the people can bitch about the resolution, looks so smooth and beautiful, it's the best JRPG looking game by far.
