Star Ocean: The Last Hope Official thread

One thing I will say, Star Ocean 4 does seem to have better cutscene animation. :P Tales of Vesperia had absolutely pathetic animation for all dialog scenes that really put a damper on everything they were trying to do. The game was so beautiful to behold, but animated like an old PS2 game (outside of battle).

It does have better character exposition in-game visuals. However, some of the later epic space battles looks absolutely terrible, but thankfully a some of them are done in CG and look great.

Posting this because it's pretty in-depth and I like user reviews more than mainstream sites reviews...

Pretty much echoes my sentiments, though I have a disagreement here or there.

Exactly what I thought when I played it. Nice HD cell visuals with pretty much PS2 era gameplay. I liked it though.

Yay, so excited!

I still haven't even finished Lost Odyssey. Got to the third disc and the game just didn't feel like it was really going anywhere, so I kinda went on hiatus with that and probably won't pick that up again until I finish the tons of junk I planned with this.

Think I'm going to fight the post-game bosses in SO3 again.

Every now and then when they happen to mention it, they've actually been hyping the Wii Tales to be a more innovative and progressive current gen game than ToV, both in gameplay and "finer details" like animation. Not that it's a bad thing if it happens (well, maybe for ToV depending on the person), but I thought it was interesting.

So is it just me or does this look like the most generic RPG ever ? a band of plucky teenagers lead by a guy called EDGE MAVERICK ? I mean really ? Seriously ?

What does it matter if the battle system and dungeon design are of decent quality when I could give a shit where the characters find themselves ?

Ah well. Not like I play this genre anymore.

damn.. user from gfaqs(dunno if he is lying) say the discs are stacked like Blue Dragon's box.

wtf? The japanese box was fine enough..

Called gamestop and they told me they don't know when they're getting it, but to call tomorrow at 1-2pm because that's when they get their next ups shipment.

I'd say Vesperia was very static in its animation, not a whole lot of movement. In Star Ocean everybody moves around a lot more but I think the animation is a bit awkward, lots of strange twitches and stuff.

I'm all for any spark in the series which breaks the mold. The foundation is solid and I wouldn't have it any other way but some elements could use overhauls.

Here's hoping for a new PS3 or 360 installment within a year or two.

Again? This is SE first 3 discs game. IU case was fine, don't know about TLR.

I'm blaming Microsoft, not SE.

This has been done with every multi-disc (beyond 2 discs) game that I'm aware of on the 360.

I hate 360 cases. :|

Not exactly towards you or anything, but I've always wondered why this genre is treated like the plot/characters are the single most important element, yet the genre is crapped on by the same comments saying this particular element is poorly done quite often...

Figured most would just give up expecting most JRPGs to have it really well-done or something.

I just want to sink my teeth into the gameplay. If the cast was all named Guy #1, Guy #2, Girl with big tits 1, and scary looking doll girl with the dumbest story in the history of gaming, I'd still get it. Gameplay is #1 for me.

The case in the Bioshock CE had three discs (not game discs, but still) and each one was on it's own hub. I'm definitely waiting on a price drop for this now.

That's a bit extreme isn't it? Waiting for a price drop simply because of the dvd case, wow.

I seem to recall the PAL/JPN versions of LO having good casing. The US version on the other hand:lol

is there a pic or something to confirm the disc stacking? i wanna be sure before i go ballistic again like i did back when blue dragon was released

It's rainking, he was never going to get it in the first place!

I bought and returned Blue Dragon several times because every copy I bought the discs were all scratched up because of the stupid fucking case. I'm not gonna pay full price for damaged goods this time.

Wut? Where did I ever say that? Even though I absolutely loathed SO3, this is probably one of my more anticipated games of the year.

The incredibly minor things that have irked people in this thread has been pretty amazing to me. I mean, the packaging is indeed something to be somewhat upset about, but there's been some pretty memorable rage going on, especially a few pages back. The anime vs. CGI portraits discussion was a lot of fun :)

In the case of the...case...I think if the packaging ends up making people worried about the safety of the discs, then it's a real problem. As much as the stacked case sucks, I don't think it'll affect the discs in most cases. Hell, if discs can survive in paper sleeves, they should be OK stacked.

Now, the annoyance factor is a different story...especially considering the possibility of swapping that third disc late in the game.

Yeah... I mean I'm not sure how many people actually play JRPGs for the story, but I've heard it thrown around before too. To me, all a good story does (in any genre) is separate games I can't put down and games I will take several voluntary breaks during. I can't remember the last time I played a game because I heard the story was anything special.

why the fuck couldn't they give us a case like this?

disc stacking is balls and you're lucky if you receive the game w/o scratches already on the fucking disc.

and even if you do get the game scratch free you have to get your own case if you want to properly take care of the discs.

I admit the case could be a problem if the discs are extremely scratched and the game refuses to play, however, I would assume in this case you could simply return it and get another. I won't be happy if the discs are scratched, but if it plays well then I'll live. Now, on to in-game issues, disc swapping in this game is very weird and stupid on their part, the game should be good enough to forgive its shortcomings in the end, though.

if i want scratched discs i'll buy the game USED. when i buy a game new i don't want to see a single fucking scratch on the disc.

since i'm buying this online it would be a real hassle if i want to return the game.

You know, I see where you're coming from, but I honestly prefer the simpler, canned animation in Vesperia to a lot of Japanese mo-cap stuff. When they do a good job, it's leagues better, no question, but a lot of the time the actors (particularly the women) always seem to be doing their best impression of a bobblehead in the middle of a car crash. I find that more distracting than noticing that they've reused the same "oh look she's shocked" animation a dozen times already.

True...

But if anyone had a convincing argument AGAINST SO4 in this thread, that would be enough to sway me.

But that won't happen :lol

Ha, I'd love to see the response to this question in the Killzone 2 thread.

Actually, that's about the last thing I want to see.

If you want an argument against SO4...Killzone 2 first because SO4 is going to be so life-consumingly awesome that you'll never get around to Killzone? ;)

I'm looking forward to both as well.

Oh shi... This comes out tomorrow.

Question: This or KZ2?

Silly question! Don't ask the same question in the KZ2 thread, you'll be branded a peon and not worthy of getting the game for even questioning another game over KZ2. I'm scared of entering that thread, people are crazy in there. Anyway, this week rocks, two great games in it.
