Star Ocean: The Last Hope Official thread

I've never played a Star Ocean game - how does it compare to Infinite Undiscovery? Loved the combat in UI, and the whole "huge party" thing. Anyone know how long SO is?

This is all second-hand since I haven't actually played SO4, but going on information that's out there plus an educated guess from playing SO3: If you liked Infinite Undiscovery's combat, think that except twice as fast and with much more depth, plus every character is playable instead of just the main dude. You don't get the ridiculous melees with 12 party members on the field, but you've got four people fighting at once from a party of eight, and you can swap your active four mid-battle, like a realtime FFX. The general consensus seems to be about 40-50 hours to complete the main game, which would put it at about twice as long as IU, except there's a lot more (and generally better) stuff to do after you've beaten the main game.

I am in the same boat, and all signs point to this being a much better game than IU. You probably can't even compare the combat between the two, other than the fact that they're both real-time.

i enjoyed iu, especially the combat. i think the combat in this is more fun though. overall i think this is a better game than iu also by a reasonable margin.

god the letterboxing is annoying as hell...

set the TV to overscan and it truncates a little bit off the top/bottom too...

So how bad is the disc switching?

It's not like you have to switch the discs about 10 times while trying to beat the game, what are you trying to get at? If you ignore the sidequests you'll probably only do two switches. Disc switching will only be bad if you're doing something like world quest > story(once you're at the 3rd disc) > hm back to questing > hm back to story > etc.

I wanted to know if it was just really the final dungeon + scenes on the last disc or if you'll need to switch repeatedly once you hit the final disc if you want to do more. How does it work after beating the game and if you want to do the secret dungeons and stuff?

Excellent question! I would like to know the answer to this as well.

Couple hours in...

Some quick thoughts

+ its Star Ocean! :D
+ upgrades to the battle system are awesome (blind side ftw).
+ 60 fps!!!!
+ first world seems big, Im sure its equivalent of the first world in SO3... but just feels bigger.
+ <3 Battle Trophies.
+ looking foward to BEAT system.

- i miss the map completion.
- as of now, I can't see enemies on the radar, just npc locations (which is nice).
- biggest complaint so far: the camera outside of battle feels wonky... not really liking it so far. Maybe I will get used to it the more I play.

Protip:
not missing the anime profiles

Could you confirm for me if there's a way to lower the volume for Voices, Music and Sound Effects?

Yes, can even lower volume for voices for CS and battle separately. All of this is in the settings options.

Nice, because I watched a cutscene from the beginning and the music was way too loud.

Wow, that's really cool. Going to have the battle voices at the lowest possible setting.

Can someone explain the how and why of the windowboxing in battles?

i guess it has to do with overscan

when i was watching the gamersyde videos i would get the black borders when using vga cables. i then tried watching the same video using component cables and didn't get the borders anymore.

kinda sucks cuz i don't want to switch out a component input every time i want to play this game

So when you've reached another disk you need to place that physical disk in, even though you've installed that disk to the HDD?

Watching the IGn video review makes this game seem really great.

The combat seems awesome, and there are diverse environments, which is a big plus.

Only big problem i see is changing discs to do sidequests? that seems like it could be ungodly annoying.

Could someone check if the game is compatible with PAL version?

Yeaah, it would be cool if someone cecked.

Edit: 3 guys on Game Faqs said that the game is region locked and won't work only on PAL consoles (seems to work on JAP one tho). Vesperia all over again so. Fuck region locking, two damn months for the EU version so, dammit. Well at least we get the game, we won't even see Vesperia. Luky us :(

Edit 2: My avatar quoting potential has gone to the star ocean :lol

Amazon is shipping soon. Will have it tomorrow or Thursday. This was more of an impulse buy, so hopefully I will like it. I loved Vesperia, never played a SO game before, so I am waiting for it to be as good.

For the guys that asked about disc swapping, it does become quite a pain for the end game stuff, but you just need to switch disc 2 and 3 depending on which planet you are on.

ENII and Baroque Dark are on disc 3 ther rest are on disc 2.

For those not doing end game stuff you just switch the discs 1, 2, 3

Same here, hopefully Gamefly will get it to me by Thursday/Friday.

The battles look really fun I can't wait to try them out. :D

This may get a little annoying. Seems cumbersome already to have to swap.
