What is this game?

This is a shmup. A top-down vertically scrolling shooter. It is the latest of Hudson's famed 'Soldier' series, including such VC marvels as Soldier Blade and Super Star Soldier.
You move your ship around, shoot things that then proceed to explode, and pick up weapon upgrades, like any shmup.

It's also five minutes long.

wat

The game comes with a Two Minute Mode and a Five Minute Mode to play, and that's it. It's two levels, 2MM has only the first, and 5MM has both.
This is based on Hudson's "Caravan" events that used to be held in Japan from 1985 to 1997, and have been reintroduced last year with SSR.

No! Wait! Don't go! It's actually a very deep game. It's all about the high score.

Think of Pacman CE, but with pew pew laser beams instead of wakka wakka.

Why would I spend eight bucks on this?

I don't know 'bout you, but I enjoy measuring my e-penis through the wonders of the internet. Odds are, since you're on GAF, you do too.

Bu-bu-bu-bu teh VC games are a full 200 points cheaper and those are full games!

They're also decade old fares. SSR's gameplay and scoring system has arguably been improved. But please, if you want to buy any of the Hudson shooters on the VC instead, go ahead.
You'll eventually get hooked, and then you'll really be screwed.

So how bout some screens

Gameplay

Shoot stuff, don't get hit, score big points. Sounds simple, right?
In Star Soldier R, there are lots of factors to consider.

· Firstly, the time. You're always on a timer. Extra seconds are converted into points after a succesful run (read: beating the boss), but sometimes spending a bit more time blasting enemies can be more rewarding.

· Then there's the combo counter. When you kill an enemy, a small timer appears in the form of a decreasing bar. Shoot another enemy to replenish it. Rinse, lather, repeat. Your max combo gets turned into points at the end, but you'll progressively receive bonuses when you hit certain landmarks.

· Then, there's point items. Namely, the yellow capsules. Each is worth 2,000 points, which doesn't seem much, until you realise they're all over the place. Good luck trying to get them all.

The finer points of scoring could fill an entire thread. Which is kinda the point.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I've been playing the game quite a bit since it came out on Monday for NA and I am hooked. After discovering that my paltry 600k netted me rank 10 in South America for 2MM, I didn't put the controller down until reaching 800k, earning pole position.
The very next day, I was down to 4th. So again I went, this time improving significantly in my play style, and made 895k, reclaiming the position.
I'm gonna try the 5MM next, and won't stop till I'm on top.

And that's what the game is all about.

So what's your top score?

If you want to know how to get a good rank in the 2-Minute mode, watch this video. (thanks jooey)

I must spread the word, get the game to compare your scores to that of Saitou :D . I haven't bought it myself yet - not enough space in the fridge and I still have tons of shooters I need to finish. Someday though, someday.

Im thinking about it...but I still havent beaten the second stage in Ikaruga HD without dying.

That and I still need to beat Gradius V, Lords of Thunder, R-Type Final, G. Darius, and alot of other shoot em ups. Gonna have to keep myself away from this one for abit.

I'll hold off saying anything about Star Soldier R. However, a certain part of the OP requires me to make one comment:

if you want to buy any of the Hudson shooters on the VC instead, go ahead.
Yes. Yes, please buy them, everybody. :D (Maybe not instead of Star Soldier R, but do buy them! For serious.) Super Star Soldier and Soldier Blade are two of my three favorite games on Wii that take place in space. Wonderful music, great action, nice visuals, almost infinite replayability, and changing the difficulty (requires a button code in SSS) has probably more significant impact than you might expect... Genuine awesome and win in those two games, if you like space shooters.

Oh, and if you're in Europe or Japan? You lucky people additionally have access to Final Soldier, another game in the series which was originally released after SSS and before SB, and also Star Parodier, the only CD game among this bunch, and basically a parody of Star Soldier that features a playable PC Engine and flying Bomberman (I think that's supposed to be Bomberman) alongside the usual Star Soldier ship. In NA we're still waiting, so I can't fully vouch for them, but if they're anything like SSS and SB, they're marvelous.

I've got Super Star Soldier...but I still like Lords of Thunder the most out of anything the TG16/CD side has brought to the VC. Crazy good soundtrack for a shooter, plus the bosses are cool/ have voices :lol

EDIT: Has SD data transfer of VC games become any faster with the previous updates? I remember it taking an abnormally long time earlier on.

EDIT: 2

Ah screw it, I usually support Hudson's stuff, and its not THAT much for a wii ware title with some decent production values. Maybe they'll make a full fledged Star Soldier game wiiware title after this one (Read: non-timed).

I'll snag it later today.

Question about this game: Some of the Caravan modes for earlier Star Soldier had variable level design, where what the game threw at you would be determined by how well you had been doing.

Does this game have variable design, or are the enemy patterns and such the same every time?

I approve of the OP, good job Saitou/Phife.

Think of Pacman CE, but with pew pew laser beams instead of wakka wakka.
:lol That does sound intriguing.

Wii not a "hardcore" gamer's system my ass. :D

Gimmie a break.

2mm and 5mm and 8bucks? Nope.

Tigerheart, Omaga 5, Assult Hereos and soon 1942. HD and Online.

XBLA > WiiWare anyday.

Some of the VC shooters are very nice.

But if it looks like an incomplete game, feels like an incomplete game, and plays like an incomplete game ...fellas, it is an incomplete game.

Yeah this game is hotness. At first I didn't enjoy the thought of 2 mins & 5 mins. Then it hit me its all about beating your score and hitting the boards. I suck and need more practice. Those just "5 mins" are going to turn into hours soon enough. So preferred method of controls? I figure I'll be using my hori stick more so than my classic controller.

If you don't like the game it's all fine and dandy, but I guess you only qualify if you actually played it.

Btw take your sorry and childish system wars elsewhere. This thread is not about what kind of games you can get on XBLA.

I salute the OP.

(And ah, Internet: There is a man whose name appears to be Saitou and whose location appears to be somewhere in South America, and he goes by the name of Phife Dawg.)

This game is super addictive. I downloaded it as something to kill time in and the 2 min mode really gets you hooked into trying to do better than your last score.

I like how you can update the Wifi rankings each time you score a new high score and then see how it only puts you at like #17 so you have to give it another round!

I can see some complaints about it being steep at 800pts for only 2 levels but after playing it for almost 2hrs straight on Monday its totally worth it.

And is it just me or do more enemies appear as you get better, I swear when I first played 2 min mode there was less stuff to kill and the more I killed/higher score I got more things started appearing on the screen.

Jesus. Get that shit out of here. Why does it always have to be either/or with fanboys. Anybody who buys Star Soldier R and has a 360 invariably already has Ikaruga, Triggerheart, Omega and all the other shooters available.

That said, I've put about five hours into SSR and have only been playing the 2mm mode. Ridiculously addictive and my favorite WiiWare title so far. My top score on 2mm is 894,500 but I can see lots of improvement areas.

Reviews seem to have been getting more and more useless these last couple of years, and Star Soldier R along with Lost Winds reconfirms this yet again.

Everyone who's bitching about this game being broken by only having a caravan mode and not a full on game are completely missing the point and should probably not even bother playing these kinds of games in the first place. IMO at least.

Besides I'm sure if this had been a regular Star Soldier game it would have scored about the same and the whining would have been about you being able to complete the game in less then half an hour like they seem to do with basically every shooter, besides Ikaruga for some reason, which is looked up to by even the most casual shooter fan as one of the most hardcore shooter ever.

Anyway enough bitching.

I love this game. Simple as that.
There's so many hidden techniques in there that pulling of a perfect run isn't going to be a feat that many will be able to pull of, myself included. ;P

I've mainly been playing the 2 minute mode, but I'm already in first place in local rankings on both modes.
Which only emphasizes how much Belgium once again sucks when it comes to videogames. :p

2min: 947.200
5min:1.762.700
Quickshot: 8.0

I really need to get a Wii arcade stick.

Awright bitches, le's git tha party started WOOOOOOO

This game is awesome. Awesome is this game.

I haven't had a chance to play it again since breaking my 895k, but I'll be abck tomorrow trying for 950k (meppi you're going down!).

Also, since people seem to be posting their Shots/second, mine is 10.3, but I'm pretty sure I can do better.

@Phife: I thought you said you wouldn't buy the game? :3 Looks like you're the first I converted.

One thing I need though, is a bit of advice... How the hell do I make it so the Psy burst with them critters and netting me 10k more points?
This guy

I still can't consistently do it :(

hehe. :)

As for those 2 enemies, I think it's random.
I've tried shooting them both at the same time and things like that, but it seems to be one of the few things that comes down to pure luck. Which seems a bit of strange actually when you look at all the other stuff, so there still might be a strategy behind it.

Even if there isn't though, it's still a nice thing to have something completely random like this in there.

I'm having trouble even hitting 8.0.
But I remember from back in the day on Track and Field in the arcades and even in Athlete Kings and Winter Heat that my friends always were quite a bit faster in whacking the buttons as fast as possible. So I don't think I'll get much better at that.
Might improve a bit when I get a stick though. ;)

From what I've noticed, the blue/red orbs (whatever those stuffs are..) you get always seem to target the one that gives you 10k/15k bonus points.

As for my records:

2-Minute Mode: 904.700
5-Minute Mode: 2.013.600
Quickshot: 6.8:lol

I'll try to reclaim the first place on local 2-Minute Mode when I am done with exams.

I've thought about that, but it's a 10k bonus, plus it spawns a bunch of small enemies that are worth 1k each. That hardly seems appropiate for a random effect. Oh well, whatcha gonna do.

Fake EDIT: Netto-Kun: Actually, that just might be it! I'll need to test that out.

That would be quite the find if that's the trick. :)

Reminds me about the dogs in Radiant Silvergun for some reason.

I didn't buy it. I updated the thread because today is a holiday here in Germany and my gf is away = lots of time for me :D . I try to keep the updates going depending on time etc.

Oh sweet, #41 2MM and #9 5 MM in Europe.:D

Wtf @ all the japanese rankings.:lol
The sad part is the half-mill difference between the top JPN 5MM score and the first non-JPN (now a Dutchman at #316, damn this moves fast).

Also wtf, the Frenchmen are gone :( JPN has the top300 2MM

Hmm, shouldnt the Quickshot list be the other way around?
Since I don't have the game I thought it was the time you need for a certain amount of button presses. I guess it's the actual button presses in a certain time then? Will adjust.

And that jp (ww) scoreboard sort of reminds me of MK Wii. Those Japanese dudes and dudettes kick some serious butt in time trial.

I bought the game recently and I've only gotten around to try the quickshot so far. I managed to get 12SPS. Gonna try the other modes later.

Seemed to have reached my limit for today as I'm only getting worse right now.

I got up to 955.000 on 2min mode. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.
A nice little trick is that you seem to be able to use the jets that shoot out of your ship when you change speed as a weapon.
Only been able to use it successfully on the boss so far though.

Been playing some 2 min mode now and I've managed to get 824.900 points. And I raised my SPS to 12.3.

This is my favourite Wiiware game so far. Haven't tried FFCC:MLaaK and Toki Tori yet though.

I was wondering when someone would start an official thread. I have a feeling a lot of people will overlook this game, which is a darn shame. It's really addicting.

High Scores

Is there some kinda bootleg XBLA I dont know about, because I dont think those games exist.

I love this game. Up to 909.500 now in 2 min mode, and I can definitely improve on several parts of the level.

Tip: If you wait at the main menu you will see a replay of your latest run. Might help you to see where you did mistakes etc.

if you, suckers, trick me into buying SSR i swear i'm gonna pown your bitch asses on the leaderboards. so watch it out with the hype!

*shakes fist and gets back to ika*

Indeed. I know of only one prior timed mode only game, though, and that's Naxat Soft's Summer Carnival '92: Alzadick for the Turbo CD, lesser known than their other game made for that event, Summer Carnival '92: Recca (NES). Alzadick's main oddity is that while the game has two different stages, you only play one of them in the main time and score modes. The other is just for the practice mode. Yeah... I don't know. It also only saves one high score (your best) per mode... Oh well. It's not particularly expensive for a Turbo CD shmup. Being timed only limited appeal, obviously... but the gameplay is great and the graphics are too, for the system. But yeah, timed modes can be great, and a well-designed one can carry a game, or, in these cases, be an entire game. Paying full price for it might be a bit harder to justify, but $8 for Star Soldier R? It's certainly worth that much, and probably a bit more.

You're also right, I'm sure, that the scores wouldn't be much if any higher if the game had a full main game too. They'd just find other things to complain about. Oh, and I do think that the game is worth trying, even for people who might think they might not like it... if you like the shmup genre, you likely will like it once you figure out the concept of actually playing for score and not just for completion. Once you get into it, it's really interesting...
