Star Trek Online Free to Play |OT| Boldly freeloading where others have subbed before

Hey guys, apologies for the bump but I'm hoping someone can help.

I recently returned to the game after around a 6 month hiatus, always tricky with MMOs I know.

I picked up the "Empress Sela" mission. Now up to this point I have managed to get through all the story arcs, taking two attempts at most. This mission completely and utterly annihilates me.

*Possible spoilers for the mission*

I'm level 36. All goes well until the D'Deridex arrives. The two allied vessels with me get shredded, and I'm dead after maybe 30 seconds, doing around 2% damage to the enemy.
I respawn, get locked in place by something, and wiped out in around 10 seconds.

Repeat.

I don't want to skip the mission, so I figure I'll level and come back later. So what can I do?
A lot of the missions I have available are reliant on "fleet actions" for the first part, and NO-ONE is queueing for these things. So they can't be done.

A friend told me "Go to the Earth Starbase and talk to a mission giver. He'll give you a supply mission to DS9 and the contact there unlocks the DS9 missions".

I can't find the guy he's talking about, any ideas?

I really want to get back to the game, but right now I just seem to be running into brick walls. I don't really want to do the standard "scan this system" repeatables.

Thanks for any advice!

No mate, given I can only get on sporadically and at weird times I can't really justify it. Hence why I was trying to find solo stuff

You don't need to justify being in the fleet. It's just an easy way to communicate with people who play the game on neogaf

Trust me, when I was more active, the times I'm online is usually when there's no one else was online. Anyone can be in the fleet for any reason.

Ok, sounds good. I usually avoid clans etc because a lot of them get shitty when you don't have the best stuff or hours to grind.
My main would be Luelle@Dodger2112

Do I just wait for an invite in game?

Btw - level 36, and the only non-solo stuff I've ever done is the things like the Borg incursions. So I know literally *nothing*!

It would be good for someone to have a look at my ship and check if I've completely screwed it up somehow. I tried a UGC mission last night. Warped into a battle with a bunch of NPC allies. They got obliterated. I managed to take out one Negh'var (barely) leaving another Negh'var and 3-4 others.

I don't remember it being this crushingly hard. Either they've rebalanced it, or I have messed up insanely badly somewhere.

Just to reiterate for anyone who is thinking of joining, there are some benefits to paying for at least one month of a gold subscription. Most of the benefits will last you your entire time there, at least for any character you get to 50 (not sure if anything increases at 60 since I've been out of sub for a long time) such as bank and inventory slots, ship and bridge officer slots, and so on.

For cheap ways to get a single month of sub, there is the retail box:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002673XJA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Or you can also get a time card:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002X92W8E/?tag=neogaf0e-20

The retail box won't get you any of the exclusive items anymore I think, but using the code does give you one free month. There used to be a collector's edition which you could find pretty cheap, but those are increasingly rare and correspondingly more expensive now. At least as of a month ago, I was also still able to use the retail disc to install the game, though naturally I still had to download all the updates. This allows me to avoid using Arc (PWE's proprietary launcher) for the moment.

The time cards, if the reviews are to be believed, are still valid for 60 days of game time, but at the price of just one month if you were to sub through official channels.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you do take this route, you'd need to buy something called the Energy Credit Cap Increase. You'll have it for free while subbed, but it goes away if you don't buy it before your sub lapses. It increases your EC limit from 10M to 1B.

Sorry for the bump. My wife has just picked this up and is really enjoying it. I'd like to join her but I play with a controller through the TV. I can use a kb to but i prefer that just for typing. What's the controller support like? Full support or will i be reaching for a mouse & kb constantly?

Can anyone mail me one of the mirror escorts from the bank to my Delta Recruit alt? There's a whole bunch just sitting there gathering dust. They're higher access than what I got on my recruit of course. Vidar@wyndstryker

I've used it before running ground missions just fine. Space might be a different question though, depending on how many buttons you have. Do you use a 360 / XB1 pad? Because there's enough support there for interactions to come with the usual colour coded button press indicators on screen.

Wyndstryker - I'll send your way when I'm home from work unless someone else gets there first. Post if someone else sends it!

Just another screenshot I felt like posting from one of my Delta Recruits. They recently redid the Galaxy class model, so it's much improved, although that's not really the main subject of this shot.

It really is a big pain in the ass to try and get back into this game when I have to deal with constant disconnects on a daily basis. They really need to tune up the servers and focus less on any upcoming fluff content they might be working on.

Are they just better escorts? That's what they seem like (and escorts really didn't need to be better)

The barrel roll, heading lock and other BOFF powers just make them really fun to fly. Pilots get quite a few heals too, so they're tankier than escorts would otherwise be.

Still waiting on something to replace my Avenger with @_@

Edit: Not that it's feeling old and busted or anything, it's still amazing, I just want to hop on board the new and shiny train is all.

The pilot specialisation skill is fun, but the innate abilities on the pilot ships are another level.

If you're on the fence, go buy one!

So I just started playing again after a LOOOOONG time. I'm in the GAFleet with my Fed science officer but I'm over level 30 now on my delta recruit Romulan Fed person. What information do I need to get an invite for that character?

(Also: what the hell should I do with my Risan pearls? There's so much new stuff.)

Just post the char@handle and someone can invite. I'd do it but not at home right now.

But when I get home I'll be having my Romulan experimental array with crth waiting for me.

I'm at level 53 and have played all the episodes.

What's the next step in this game? I'm kind of confused the next step I should take toward endgame stuff.

There's still a bunch of missions for 54 to 60.

End game is in the PvE queues (try to beat the elite variants that open up at 60), and also user generated content through the Foundry and PvP.

I've noticed there are several missions that are replayable. Should I just level grind on those? It's strange they didn't carry me all the way to 60, I didn't skip any of them.

Hmm, there might be some of the older revamped episodes you can replay - the Borg and Romulan arcs for example. They're different now than at launch (with better rewards).

Alternatively you can play a couple of PvE queues such as Gateway to Grethor or The Cure etc. to get you enough XP to level up.

Oh, if you head to Defera in the Alpha Quadrant there's an Invasion Zone there with decent XP rewards.

How did you manage to do missions with a minimum rank of 58-60, at 53? o_O Unless I'm missing something.

Badassness?

I'm sort of shocked that I got that far without hitting 60. As I was playing, I was thinking that there would be more after I ground through those episodes.

I'm doing the Sela stuff now, but I'm breezing through it as well. I've beaten two episodes already and I haven't leveled a single level yet.

Missions are generally released level-less and then worked in to the mission progression at an appropriate level. Could be you did Dust to Dust when it was released.

I actually downloaded and played this over the weekend and was impressed....mostly with how fun the space combat was. Didn't care much for the ground combat or the character animations and the voice acting was pretty bad in some of the missions. Game definitely shows its age but I still had fun. I might pick up a retail copy off ebay or Amazon and spend some more time with it after I finish Witcher 3.

Got back into this (again) myself. Space is still fun. Ground is still a slog. The ZEN market for ships is still a fucking scam. It's still a poor simulation of the show, and it seems more cynical now, but it helps pass time. The DOFF missions are very mobile gamey, but at least they provide real bonuses and fit within the universe as opposed to the strangely less elegant garrison mission implementation over in WoW.

I am experiencing a weird bug where my settings won't stick. Things like monitor refresh rate, auto-loot, etc have to be reset every single time I log into the game. It's stupidly annoying. Not sure if this is a common issue.
