Star vs. the Forces of Evil |OT| I'm From Another Dimension

Anyone have a gif of Star dancing from the start of the intro.

Gonna have a GOOD TIME!

Watched "Mewnipendance Day" and "The Banagic Incident". I said it before and I'll probably say it again: holy crap, we're actually getting an overall storyline! I wonder if Toffee may be intentionally trying to make Star sympathetic to monsters, since I don't otherwise know why he would set up that monster like that, unless he thought he would legitimately stir up trouble. As for the second story, it was fine.

I've only caught a few eps of this (usually reruns) but the recent ones seem to be hinting at some big things to come. Interesting.

Something to look forward to in September.

Seems to be making his move already.

Wow...kinda saw that angle coming with Toffee (especially after that cold stare at the end of Fortune Cookies as the other monsters flee)

Still, can only hope that the character will give deep, Dexter-esque inner dialogues soon enough...

I just think Toffee wants the wand for himself, but time will tell if he is a more hidden agenda.

Wow, the last two episodes were great. Their definitely building up to the endgame now that Toffee replaced Ludo. I really enjoyed some of the animations and art in the field trip episode. Looking forward the half hour special.

Don’t miss the special 22 minute Star vs the Forces of Evil season one finale!!!! Seriously, don’t miss it, its great!!!

Episode 13: Storm the Castle

Watch episode 13 of “Star vs. the Forces of Evil” monday September 21st, 830/730c on Disney XD!

Thank you Evon Freeman for all the wonderful season one show posters!

Daron Nefcy

Ludo was a prick and something of a dullard, but I still felt bad for him when he got usurped.

Field Trip might be the funniest the show's ever been.

And that girl that has a blatant crush on Marco...did they just turn her into a vampire and hide it in a 1-second gag?

Bravo if so.

Ok so:

-That was an epic episode

-Toffee is a badass villian

-Loved how Star went super saiyan at that part

-I'm guessing the wands power is cut in half now? Or does it just not work entirely?

-Confirmed Neogaf is the wand:

Yeah that finale was intense. Toffee is on a completely different playing field in terms of villainy than Ludo. It'll be interesting to see what repercussions this episode has.

I just marathoned the series, amazing finale.

Series is good, not Steven Universe or Gravity Falls tier, but still high tier.

The animation shift is very noticeable, it makes the characters look older, I can't decide which style I liked better.

Yeah, was really surprised how serious that finale got. Wonder if Toffee comes back stronger after that and where did Ludo go? What will he do without his castle.

Season 2 is going to be crazy.

Pretty good season finale. The fight scenes were pretty great and I loved that super attack transformation thingy Star used. Also the finale was surprisingly pretty dark at times, especially when Star "sacrificed" the wand.
Though i'm not quite sure over with how quickly they brought the wand back. Would have been nice to maybe see Star adjusting without a wand for a little bit similar to the previous episode, though i'm pretty curious to see what's different about the wand now.

the finale was really good, i kind of hoped they would have not brought the wand back so quickly and maybe have the first few eps of s2 have star sans wand

The season finale was OK. I suppose I was expecting the story to be more consistently serious from the reactions here, as opposed to having a serious scene then immediately having a gag repeatedly. It's kind of disappointing that we still don't know what the deal is with Toffee, but I did like when he suddenly made a crazy face. The drama of the wand being destroyed was also undermined by a tiny unicorn randomly appearing to power it up again. Still, it was a fun episode. I wonder if the wand will be completed and Ludo will bring the gang back together by the end of the second season premiere or if there will actually be a lasting change in that regard.

OK that season finale was a total mindfuck for me.
What is Toffee's goal? I know we'll find that out in later seasons but the mind screw in this finale takes it to another level with the friggin' italian unicorn.
Like really..WTF WAS THAT?!

Why was there a unicorn spirit in the wand? Is toffee some kind of evil demonic horse creature that just looks reptelian?
Also dat face

Oh yeah can't believe I forgot that @_@

Right then anyone read any interesting theories about Toffee?

The missus and I marathoned the series this week, after a couple recommendations in the Steven Universe thread. It does a lot of stuff right, and I was not surprised to learn today that it's created by a woman (yeah, "Daron" is not exactly a self-explanatory name). After this and the utterly incredible SU, it's hard not to wish a lot more women were in charge of creative projects of all kinds.

The finale was great, but it was advertised to me as "Stevenbomb 1 levels of epicness", which is admittedly a tough standard to meet. Really looking forward to know more about Toffee in season 2. What a tease with all those conspicuous shots of his missing finger and the implications that Mewni history as told by the winners is somewhat lacking in neutrality.

I don't know about anyone else but it seems like one of the dime a dozen "random lol" cartoons popping up, at least based on what I saw of it.

It's a fun episodic cartoon with good animation, a likable lead, and the novelty of having a woman creator. Some episodes are good, some are bad. There is some continuity and it gets serious at points, but it's something that fans are overstating to get people interested in the series (just like how My Little Pony fans used to go, "See, it has action!" and such during season 1), for now at least.

Grab Your Wands video promo.

And I got a feeling video comments got way out of hand,
since Marco apparently mentioned becaming "smooch buddies" with Star as the video shows.

Saw some comments myself before the Disney XD Youtube channel decided to disable comments of their videos.

I'm really not buying it being that true though.

10 more days for the Season 2 premiere. And more information is starting to trickle out.

Don’t miss the SEASON TWO PREMIERE of Star vs the Forces of Evil monday, July 11th, 1030am/930c on Disney XD!!!

Official S2 show posters by Becky Dreistadt.

Also episode descriptions of the first three episodes have been made available online. You can see them in this image link.

Gentle reminder that Season 2 premieres tomorrow morning @ 10:30 A.M. EST.
EDIT: though at this point it's already tomorrow for some people... whoops

Also here's a link to an interview with show creator Daron Nefcy on what awaits in S2:

She says that in many ways, this season is the fruition of what she wanted to do when she first created the character—while Nefcy was still a student at the California Institute for the Arts. “Star initially was a younger character. She was a girl who wanted, more than anything, to have magical powers. But through force of will she could make things happen, “whether it’s throwing glitter at a bully’s eye,” she said about the original version of the series. “But as it evolved, it was fun to age her up a little. Now she’s 14, she’s a freshman in high school, and the magical powers are real. And all of that stuff went together and led to these bigger magical plots, which I always wanted to do as well.”

Those larger magical plots are something that will feature heavily in season two as well: “It’s gotten more sequential, which is something I always wanted to do. It naturally keeps creeping in that direction.”

As to what else people can expect from the second season of the series, Nefcy promises that you’ll “learn more about Star’s parents and see more of [Star’s home world] Mewni,” and “find out what happened to Star at the end of last season.” (Spoiler alert: her magical wand changed … and it’s unclear whether or not that’s an entirely good thing.) Also in the cards: a new outfit for the highly “cosplay-able” Star (of which fans have already been making their own), and a host of amazing guest stars, including “Weird Al” Yankovic, Mayim Bialik, Melissa Rauch, and Patrick Stump, joining series regulars like Eden Sher, Adam McArthur, Alan Tudyk, and Jenny Slate.

Wasn't fond of the show initially, humor in first few episodes felt too forced and it seemed like too much of a knock off of CN's most popular shows. But it's really come into its own. Marathoned it yesterday, lioking forward to season two.

Hope this thread gains more popularity.

S2 Episode 1

A nice return to the series. The new wand is definitely messed up and it looks like that'll be a major plot point this season. Star being able to do magic without her wand is pretty fascinating too and it seems to be a family thing on her mother's side which might cone up again. Thqt being said the biggest takeaway of this episode is that Star is keeping a big secret about her feelings on Marco.

S2 Episode 3

This was really amazing. Didn't even need a lot of dialogue as was a masterpiece of visual storytelling everything from Ludo learning to adapt from the spider to him fighting it and taming the wild was marvelous. This was the kinda episode that Lydo needed, one where he's out of his element but still shows rhat he is capable of beong a threat. The animation really showed here and the twist at the end was surreal.

That was some good set-up pieces for future episodes. Did you notice that
the missing piece Ludo found was set within a skeletal hand... with a missing finger bone
? Chills. Anyone who was paying attention last season knows who that belonged to.

Also, altered OP:

Interesting contrast.

Yup, been wondering what
those bones
were. Oh god.

And yup, the episode was a pretty good start for the season. Looking forward to more as well. Also not sure if this was mentioned before, but season 2 will have 22 episodes, almost twice as long as season 1. Found at the 1:10 mark here.

Hey there folks. I've seen bits and pieces of this show around the internet. Do you guys mind telling me what its about and why people like it? Or if there is an episode I should watch to see if I would enjoy the show?

The theme song. The theme song just pulls you in... no one knew nor cared about this show until the song + OP was leaked on the web.

Nah, not just that but it definitely turned some heads.

Well, I can only speak for myself but... you know, under normal circumstances I probably wouldn't be interested in this show. Doesn't really do all that much to distance itself from other shows w/ similar ideas: super-energetic (and consequently, magical... because of course she is) teen girl goofball that gets her friend(s) mixed up in all kinds of zany mischief on a weekly basis. And at first that's seemingly all there is, with "villains" who are anything but villainous... Star is more a danger to herself and those around her than these punching bags.

Still, the show is charming enough and occasionally you get some background lore that suggests darker intentions but the show on the whole remains upbeat and positive. I guess the interactions between the two leads has a certain appeal too, they're played off as best buds after their initial rocky introduction but let me tell you, there's plenty of fans out there who would be nothing short of delighted for the show to take their relationship further. It's pretty clear they've developed a close bond despite both of them pining for someone else...

tumblr_oa89c68l4u1u858umo2_540.gif

Anyway, by the time a proper antagonist is introduced, SVTFOE has laid down a few plot points that, as of the season one finale, have not yet been fully answered and introduced certain characters that appear to have history and/or potential for more, so the desire to see where the show takes those threads is strong. It's not as laid thick as shows like Gravity Falls or Steven Universe... it's a lot more laid back. Still, if you can get past the quirkyness of the main character it can be quite enjoyable. And the fanbase is quite pronounced (just not on GAF) so for some people that's a plus: there's a community in place to bounce thoughts and theories around (and copious amounts of fan arts).

As for recommendations? If you don't mind skipping the first episode for general context, the Season 1 double feature Mewberty/Pixotopia gives you, in 22-minutes, the general idea of what the show is trying to accomplish: a bit of weirdness with some healthy doses of comedy.

I watched the whole season over the past two days and really enjoyed this show.

I like that this is a show that isn't as serious as an Adventure Time or Steven Universe or Gravity Falls. Don't get me wrong, the reason I love those two shows so much is because that they don't treat kids like idiots and get into some really heavy territory that can resonate with adults as well. But Star is just a...lighter show. As we've seen, it too can tap into the darker themes, and when it does it it is very good. If it continued this way I'd be very happy but if it also liked to stay very peppy and upbeat and hit more kid humor I also wouldn't mind too much. I am okay with the sometimes back and forth tone of the show.

Is it amazing? Nah, not really. But I enjoyed every episode I watched, some an enormous amount. So that's good for me.

Meanwhile yo, Toffee is the fucking realness. That entire last episode of S1 was great because of just how good a villain he is even with so little that we know. His machinations to get the one that is completely loyal to Ludo and competent kicked out, to undermine and make Ludo look bad, the way the monsters gain so much more competency when he's directing them. And just all the small things they do with his mannerisms. I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE calm and collected villains and he just took everything in stride. Arm gets blown off? I'll just lay here for a while. Marco throws a punch at me? Eat your sandwich. He doesn't fight anyone a single time in the show and that "Surprise!" was really chilling as was his smile when the wand exploded because it was exactly what he wanted to have happen.

I like the two theories I had also being thrown around a lot on the internet; that his missing finger is either because of magic inflicted wound he could not regenerate from or that he left it behind so when he was exploded he would grow back from it. That puts him on a really high pedestal of planning shit.

Also seen a number of foreshadowing theories about him being related to
Marco
somehow due to the
flash of the evil arm when Marco is offered the sandwich by Star and then Toffee offering him the same sandwich as well as him wiping off the coat stand mirror and seeing his own face reflected on Toffee's jacket
but there's a lot of mystery.

Anyways, good show. Glad the second season is starting up

The first two episodes of season 2 were..interesting very different in tone, surprised the show isn't talked about it more its not groundbreaking but has the potential to be something even better.

That 2nd episode was really REALLY strong.

That click from Day 90 to Day 1 was foreboding.

Also
the 2nd half of the wand being clutched in Toffee's skeletal hand
is some ominous shit

Cool to see lots of people are liking the new episodes, specifically the 2nd one considering how different it is.

A bit off-topic but has anyone else realized how amazing the soundtrack to this show is. I've been listening to it on Youtube and it's just perfect for what the show is.
