I played for over 3 hours last night, so I have a better grasp of the game now.
First of all, Criterion flipping NAILED the ship-to-ship combat! I actually found myself playing and enjoying Starfighter Assault last night over the ground battle. Everything about it felt good. With the last game, I was virtually unstoppable in the air... Until they updated the mechanics and pretty much ruined the entire mode with an overheat on the lockdown and other removals/additions. And even then, it wasn't super fun. I could play a few battles and then I'd have to move on because it was all the same.
This mode is... wow! There's so much going on. Ship classes spice it upeven though I am wretched at the bomber classI tore it up with the interceptors. I just wish the Share button functioned when I wanted it to. Anyhoo, with the last game, they had those crappy tokens you'd have to find and collect in order to play as a hero/Falcon and over the many hours I played BF1, I was the Falcon a total of 2 times. Twice! Last night, I was the Falcon after 3 matches because of the new point system.
So, Criterion, you guys deserve a raise. Now... go make a new Burnout.
As for the ground assault... also way better. I recommend NOT doing what I did and pick the officer class to start with. While they may look fun with their turrets and fancy hats and stuff, they wear wet tissue paper as uniforms and a stiff breeze will inflict injury on you. Once I realized how fragile they were (and losing severely match after match after match), I went with the soldier and heavy class to try them out. MUCH better. And if you aren't completely inept at sniper rifles like I am, the specialist class could also be useful, but not when I'm controlling one.
Anyhoo, this game is seriously fun. I was worried that by making this more Battlefield-like that Ia filthy casualwould start to feel outclassed in every encounter, but once I found a class that clicked with me, I was able to hold my own. Unlike in Battlefield where I was just a human meat shield for the other, better players around me.
The game still needs to cook a little longer though. At one point, it just randomly decided to not count any of my progress. No leveling up, no rewards, no progression on my daily assignments, nothing until I restarted the game. And then it also froze in-between loading screens once as well. But that's what betas are for, right?
All-in-all, if you thought the first Battlefront was lackluster and vacant... this one, so far, has fixed every problem that I can see. Well... I still am missing the character appearance customization. But maybe that's just not present in this build.
