Star Wars: Episode IX is now set for release on May 24, 2019

Don't worry, there will be "rewrites" and "reshoots" that will force Disney to begrudgingly push back their May blockbuster all the way back to December.

A shame for them, but sacrifices must be made to make the best possible movie.

I liked Jurassic World.

Also I'm fine with a new Indiana Jones movie, but doing it with Harrison Ford sounds terrible.

I guess they'll move Avengers 4 from May 4 2019 then. Wonder until when, as I can see Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 take the November spot.

Yeah it was delayed but immediately as a reaction to how well TFA did. When coupled with their other release date announcements today, it sounds like they are getting their ducks in a row for 2019 which is stacked as fack for them.

If TLJ also hits over 1.5-2B, I wouldn't be surprised to see them push to Dec as that slot seems to work magic

Who is Indy going to be fighting? Soviets again? Maoists probably won't fly with the potential to harm the Chinese box office.

Nooooooo, Indy 5 delayed by a year :(
I was afraid something like this was gonna happen.
Hopefully they start shooting next year still.

Han Solo is coming out in May 2018, LucasArts wants May back. No way it gets pushed back to December.

This being the last in the trilogy and already having to rework the script and having Trevorrow involved.. I could see them doing reshoots and spending that extra time to get this thing right.

So, Spielberg is doing "The Post" now for this fall, and then he'll start pre-prod for Indy 5 or is there another project he wants to squeeze in?

Any particular reason?

I was being facetious but December was like Star Wars event around the Christmas period, it was just a nice time the last two times and we all get together for it when people are back for the holidays and have free time.

I don't know dude, the last one was on some goofy-ass shit. I didn't even know they were making a new one. Is the fact that a sequel is coming what has your interest, or is it the concept for the sequel? Any idea what it's premise is?

It's not like a new Indiana Jones film could tarnish the series. That already happened. The end of the series can either stay the same (be terrible) or it can be fixed. They can't hurt it anymore.

There's always a chance they could have learned from their mistakes and this one will be great. Sylvester Stallone learned from Rocky V. It's a very good thing that they didn't quit after Rocky V and leave the series with that end. Indiana Jones shouldn't be left with Crystal Skull as the end. If the next film is shitty, that's too bad. They need to at least attempt it though.

They aren't releasing SW 3 weeks after Frozen 2.

That's true, I mean if they have the CHOICE to release in May and not compete with it, that would be the smarter one. However if the movie simply isn't finished and they need more time, it's getting delayed

I didn't realize Frozen 2 is opening then

Both share a significant overlap with the huge audience of children, so why let one cannibalize the other's box office when they can both make significant bank from that market?

It would cannibalize the family market both films would enjoy, independent of each other.

Frozen would own Thanksgiving, Star Wars would own Christmas, and we're not exactly talking a major time or money investment in either case. People can do both.

Weird that they would still schedule Episode IX for May when Avatar is confirmed not to release in December 2019. When you have the Christmas release slot wide open and Avengers 4 already opening in May, why put Star Wars in May?

He was originally going to shoot The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara this year with Oscar Isaac and Mark Rylance, but I guess put it on hold to do The Post first. With Indy 5 being pushed back a year, my guess is Spielberg is still going to squeeze Mortara in now.

Ready Player One, Robopocalypse. What happened to those.

Ready Player One is in post and releasing next March.

They've been working on story for a long while now, and they've got plenty of time still before they'd need to start shooting. Seems like they have more than enough time to hit a May 2019 date right now.

Frozen 2 is coming out in 2019 during the fall.

If that's the argument, three Marvel movies are scheduled for 2019 and one usually gets a May spot. December still seems far more likely.

It could be July instead. March-July-November.

Looking at the Disney release dates, I was wrong. Avengers so early in the month and Star Wars at the end is weird. I wonder how much Star Wars will cannibalize Avengers.

I thought they start shooting this summer?

May is the traditional month for Star Wars. TFA had to be pushed back due to rewrites and Ford's injury, and that threw the others off as well. They are getting back in order with Han Solo.

Sounds like they were really rushed on other stuff too though. Maz was supposed to be a puppet and they CGI'd her, etc

conveyor belt of movies. They had all the money into the world to make an original new star wars trilogy and they remade a new hope. Fully expecting parts 2 and 3 to be rehashes of something we've seen before.

kylo ren turning on snook to help the mary sue.

Yeah I just saw. I guess Disney must see Frozen 2 doing bigger business, and for longer, than Avengers 4, and are more comfortable with Star Wars opening just a few weeks after Avengers rather than a whole month after Frozen? That seems kinda crazy to me, but I also don't see the big deal about Frozen was in the first place. :lol

JJ actually wanted to release TFA in May 2016 while Disney wanted May 2015. The December release was a compromise between the two, and then Disney kept it for Rogue One and The Last Jedi after they saw that TFA money come in.

Frozen and Star Wars are different markets. Avengers and Star Wars are sort of the same demographic.

Episode 8 was supposed to come out in May but got pushed to December too.

Lame. Star Wars is now codified with Christmas.
Well shit, if that was able to happen so quickly it won't be hard to re-codify it at any other time of year.
Holy fuck. Just realized that 2020 will be 12 years removed from Crystal Skull. Christ...
Yeah. At the time when they seemed maybe interested in doing another, I wouldn't have guessed there would be another decade+ gap and it would still happen.

So what are they doing after IX, endless spinoffs? Another trilogy?

There were unofficial reports of them wanting to do EP10-12 after taking a break from the main films for a few years.

Though I have no doubt they'll release some version of a SW movie every year until we die

It's starting filming in July, right?

Han Solo and Episode IX are May titles, not sure why everyone expects a delay beyond the films doing great in December. The Star Wars movies will do great anywhere you put them.

It's not that, it's a terrible business decision for Disney to put out a Star Wars movie in the same month as an Avengers movie. Completely cuts off the legs of the latter, and when currently Deadpool 2 releases the weekend after Han Solo, that's why it's really hard to believe a summer release when both TFA and R1 prove that December is lucrative for Star Wars.

Guarantee you Rogue One wouldn't hit 500M+ if it had been a May 2016 release.
