I can dig it. A bunch of people I've never heard of, none of them are overly pretty, and mostly European. I just got cautiously excited.

This is like the last supper for nerds.

Let's be real, unless they're chris hemsworth, chris evans, or beyonce they're basically unknowns to the general public.

That's pretty much what I'm saying - it's not like Jesse Plemons is somehow OUTSIDE that definition because he played a shitheel on Breaking Bad for half a season.

I'm pretty stoked about Serkis and Von Sydow here, but really they all look good -- or at least seem promising.

I haven't been very hyped about this movie despite not having any reason to not look forward to it...but now I'm getting hyped.

All they pretty much have to do for a teaser is the Force theme/Binary Sunset, a green lightsaber in the dark, and a pan up to Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker for the first time in 32 years. Tickets will be sold.

And so are Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Domnhall Gleeson.

Well established ≠ well known
They were both well established and well known, from what I recall. They may all have nothing quite the size of Star Wars before it came along but they had sizeable roles in pretty big films before The Phantom Menace. Liam Neeson in particular (though I may be leaning too much on what I liked for McGregor).

Hype levels intensifying... Great cast

From one statement made Luke Skywalkers wife will be Mara Jadeish, but not named Mara Jade. Basically same personality, red hair, green eyes. Everything else is up in the air.

Makes you wonder why they can't go with Mara Jade unless they want it to be a surprise.

Even Lucas went with the name Courscant since it was that well known because of the EU.

Completely forgot about that.

von Sydow gives me a Jorus C'baoth vibe. Yes, yes I know the EU was scrapped and would never have made it into the new movies anyway. Just a simple nostalgia-fueled observation.

1) Serkis just ensured the CGI characters will be fucking awesome and blow away every other non-Gollum CGI ever
2) Hm, the girl sitting between Solo and Leia. I wonder if that's on purpose...
3) MAX VON FUCKING SYNDOW! God yes, PLEASE BE SITH...

Why? The Thrawn Trilogy is pretty much the best Star Wars trilogy out there, and was much more faithful to the OT than the PT ever was. It played a major role in reviving interest in Star Wars, I'd argue. Plus it has Mara Jade, one of the most well-written female protagonists in sci-fi.

Meh.

Mara Jade was one of the worst characters, IMO. Too much of a Mary Sue for me, and owes a lot of Shira Brie. Not to mention the whole fan service aspect of the character.

Thrawn was an interesting character, aside from both Thrawn and Jade going against what was previously established as the Emperor being biased against aliens and females.

I hated the Ysalamir because like the Yuuzhan Vong it felt like the author had no way to handle Luke, so he dropped in Anti-Force stuff..

It read too much like Tom Clancy Star Wars to me, but that's another thread altogether :)

All they pretty much have to do for a teaser is the Force theme/Binary Sunset, a green lightsaber in the dark, and a pan up to Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker for the first time in 32 years. Tickets will be sold.

Even easier: Vader breathing with a title card.

I don't care if he's in it or not (but I bet he will be...somehow).

Not really unusual for Star Wars, there's always been a heavy non-American (mostly British) element. For example, in TPM, we had:

Liam Neeson - Irish
Ewan McGregor - Scottish
Natalie Portman - American/Israeli
Jake Lloyd - American
Ian McDiarmid - Scottish
Ahmed Best - American
Pernilla August - Swedish
Ray Park - Scottish
Anthony Daniels - English
Kenny Baker - English
Samuel L. Jackson - American
Frank Oz - American (born in England)

Indeed, a lot of the original trilogy and the prequels were filmed in UK sound stages, so a lot of the cast outside of some of the main stars are from the UK/ England.

I'm sure she'll be incredibly well-developed and three dimsenional with wants and needs outside of that of a love interest!

You know, Princess Leia was pretty well fleshed out in that respect in the original trilogy and was never pegged into a generic love interest/ helpless maiden role. Even in a New Hope where she was mostly portrayed as damsel in distress, she was still anything but helpless. Then she made the transition in the two sequels to leader of the rebellion, where she really started to kick ass as a character. Especially in Jedi where she saved Solo quite a few times.
