IT'S DANCING FOR JOY TIME!!!!!!

The prequels sucked but even still, I'm super excited that now it feels like it's definitely coming beyond any shadow of a doubt! I will be there day one like Mortal Kombat where I ran up the aisle doing fireballs.

Sheeeeesh!

That original cast isn't very impressive.

A bunch of C & D listers. The only actor on there with some major credence to his name is Max Von Sydow. Serkis is cool, but hardly a legendary actor.

The Prequels had a way more impressive cast,

What happened to all those names they were floating around like Benedict Cumbebatch? Gary Goldman? Lupita N'Yongo?

This cast is really bland. I am guessing one of two things occured:

1) Disney didn't want to be bothered expending the scatch for a better cast

OR

2) A lot of actors decided to pass because Star Wars' reputation has floundered since the Prequels.

Doesn't have to be the empire. Maybe he had a personal failure of some kind and has exhiled himself. Maybe after a lifetime of adventure he's had enough and wants to be left alone. A good writer can come up with a reason.

Luke's ultimately the student of the two most spiritual characters. I can see him setting up a new Jedi order and leaving to be on his own. It isn't that hard to write.

As a semi white guy, i dont. Hype down

oh well

... How do you feel about a woman lead?

Really like the casting....well done.

Now just give me a really good to great Star Wars movie again... please JJ.

So why not have Adam Driver be one of Han and Leia's kids, but still be the villain. Apprentice to the main Sith Baddie, anyone? Skywalkers do love them some dark side, after all. Trilogy becomes about attempting to redeem them.

"It's not you, it's your kids Marty! Something's got to be done about your kids!"

Well, here are the good things:

  • George Lucas relegated to just a "creative consultant." This story is apparently based on a treatment he penned for the "sequel trilogy." This was followed by a treatment Michael Arndt penned, as well.

  • Lawrence Kasdan is co-writing with J.J. Abrams.

  • A greater emphasis on practical effects.

  • Inspired casting choices all around.

  • John Williams will score.

  • Daniel Mindel will be the cinematographer.

  • Its narrative will propel the story forward into new worlds and characters AFTER the original trilogy; not stymy it with the preceding events that detract from several twists in the original trilogy.

Hey gta sa was my favourite gta game. Was there really salt? I need to see this

I don't think it exists on gaf anymore (it was a different forum software then), but I was a member for that era (since 2001 actually) and I remember a lot of "its too....orange.....or I can't relate, etc". It was all so transparent and hilariously salty.

There's not a single name in the new cast that I have a problem with (although I'm not familiar with Daisy Ridley), so I'm ready to go. Also, I'm kind of glad whats-his-face from Breaking Bad wasn't cast. Based off looks, there's no doubt he was after the same role as Domhnall Gleeson.

I just got an exclusive look at the script! Don't share on other sites!

KID SOLO (throws a tantrum on the floor): but MOOOOOM, I wanted to drive the Millineum Falcon to hang out with my friends!
LEIA (scratches nose with coke nail): I forbid it! You're a princess and a daughter of Republican Senator! Besides, you just want to hang out with the black kid...
KID: DAD!
HAN: Oh come on, your worshipness, Lando's Jedi kid ain't so bad...right...?
LEIA: He'll turn her to the power of the Dark Side! She'll never come back!
KID: UGH, I hate you both!
HAN (looks at Chewie): We should have said fuck the reward and turned ourselves in to Jabba...

You do realize that this exact same thing could apply to the original trilogy as well right? Fisher, Hamill, and Ford were nowhere near big names. Alec Guiness was the actor lending the film any credence. James Earl Jones at the time was semi known but not a legend yet.

I would kill to know what roles they're all playing. Just the titles so I can have an idea who is going to be the main trio/quad and who is secondary.

This Boyega guy is in the new season of 24, apparently.

Dude, when the original film came out Star Wars was NOTHING!

IT wasn't the established and legendary franchise it is today.

Totally different circumstances.

Reminds me of when I heard Ciarán Hinds was cast as Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones.

Why we gotta have Max Von Sydow in this? So sick of seeing the same character actors in everything.

Both Lucas' outline and Arndt's script were bounced last August. There might still be some of Lucas' original ideas still in there somewhere, but Kasdan & Abrams essentially rewrote the outline & the Episode VII script.

I would argue that he's a character actor. Also, the series always needs some older actors with acting chops and Syndow is one of the greatest actors of all time.

Someone who doesn't understand Star Wars

You want all nobodies for Star Wars...the story and talent of the actors is important not other movies they have been in.

Casting big names just because they're big names (see: Prequels) is also a bad thing.

Liam Neeson was wasted as a fairly stoic bland Qui Gon. Christopher Lee didn't get anywhere close to enough time as Dooku. Sam Jackson was probably told to be as un-Sam Jackson as humanly possible.

Lucas' ideas are usually good. It's how he executes them. (My film degree side speaking.)

LOL.

I think it was Saiorse Ronan (who also auditioned) who said that everyone in Hollywood was trying to get in. The prequels didn't flounder the reputation of Star Wars, not as much as some would believe.

I thought they were going with Lucas' general outline, but that Arndt's script wasn't what they wanted. Pretty sure George's outline is still a part of it.

I hope this is a good thing (I think it will be, judging from the prequels) if they cherry picked the good stuff and were like no thats stupid to the other stuff. Kind of like how Vince McMahon was able to take the 2 out of 100 ideas that weren't total shit from Vince Russo and turn them into money making gold for the WWF in the late 90s.

Absolutely perfect casting. Aside from Sirkis & Sedow, it's entirely unknown names - most of which with a proven track record of excellence.

Casting seems great to me, I'm pretty sure JJ and Disney knew from the start that some people would complain, but this was apparently the plan. I think under-the-radar actors is the way to go.

Andy Serkis in Star Wars is awesome too, didn't see that one happening.

That may have been the case when the original came out.

In today's movie market you want some A-listers to bolster and help anchor the film. Even if it is Star Wars.

Why would that influence the kinds of actors they're looking to hire?

I'd argue that because Star Wars is so prolific, you shouldn't stuff it with big A-list names. And it's not like the cast chosen here are any slouches, except for the two new kids I don't know.

Casting big names just because they're big names (see: Prequels) is also a bad thing.

Ummmmm dude that was because of Lucas' failure as a writer/director.

If a more competent director had been utilized with a script that allowed for the actors to inhabit characters with REAL depth and complexity it would have worked fine.

Everyone turned in lousy performances in the Prequels. Not just the big names.

Star Wars is one of the biggest and most recognized brands on the planet. It doesn't need any help.

Evil senator behind the scenes?
Max von Sydow

All of these archetypes/ideas are flat-out boring. I hope we see something truly fresh with this cast, not the same old sith lord/apprentice/evil senator, old jedi, etc etc.

Also, Lando better be in this. Billy Dee Williams already reprised the role just recently in a cameo (voice acted).
