Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer

Do people just...not like anything about the prequels at all?

I like plenty of small pieces. The sense of intrigue and ominous mystery in the Kamino segments of AotC for instance.

But they are largely very badly made movies with a wonderful score and some occasionally great looking shots and not much more than that.

Rey pretends to be interested in the dark side so that Kylo will bring her to Snoke. She tries to kill Snoke and he sees through her ruse and tortures her. Luke arrives to save her and dies. Rey feels like shit for messing up so badly.

I think you've nailed it. And seeing Rey tortured will be the impetus for Ren's face turn in the 3rd movie.

Well...that character you just called "a thing" fought two of the greatest Jedis of all galaxy at the same time and killed one of them, damn that's a pretty bad ass "thing"

Stories are not sports competitions. What makes a character interesting is not the number or ferocity of enemies he's killed. Internal conflicts, desires, needs, motivation and humanity make a character interesting. Kylo Ren has all these things. Darth Maul has none of these things.

MSW spoiler: (possibly major)

So the rumours of Leia being badly wounded on a ship and spending much of the movie in a coma may be true?

Everyone's seeming to come at this in terms of selecting the most likely narrative tropes for each of the roles the characters were filling previously, but Rian Johnson doesn't write like that.

What about their motivations?

Rey wants to understand her power and her role in the world. She's not driven by a desire to defeat the final boss or restore peace to the galaxy, particularly. She doesn't have any vendettas. Kylo's been trying to capture her, and he killed Han which Rey isn't too keen on, but she's not afraid of Kylo anymore. She lit him up. More so she's looking for meaning, identity. That's not a clearly light or dark side motivation, now, is it?

Luke's cynical, isolated, broken by Kylo's turn, and seems scared shitless of Rey's power and extremely reluctant to be the one to cultivate it. Snoke, on the other hand...

Kylo killed his dad, but is he willing to kill his mom? Maybe not. Han wasn't necessarily much of a father figure. Leia, though, seemed to be there, and seemed to care about him all the way. Kylo's something of a wild card. He's certainly emotionally unstable, and has a lot of murdering under his belt, but he's still internally conflicted. If Kylo fails to pull the trigger, is he still on terms with Snoke? Does he still want to be?

Finn has a strong moral compass, bravery to spare, and cares for Rey. He looks to be knee-deep in bloody Resistance operations, and as a traitor to the First Order his war is clear. When he eventually crosses paths with Rey again, who has little vested interest in the the political situation and could have a more willing mentor in Snoke than Luke, will they still be on the same side? What would the implications be for both Rey and Finn to reunite under those circumstances? What if Rey's parentage is more Palpatine than Skywalker, and her identity has been suppressed by Luke, maybe ending up in exile on Jakku by his hand in the first place?

What's the darkest timeline, then? Rey being trained by Snoke, Kylo's allegiance falling into question after sparing Leia and then being tossed aside for the latest and greatest when Rey joins up, leaving Kylo salty as hell and potentially without a master. Finn wants Snoke defeated for the sake of the Resistance and the fall of the First Order, and wants Rey on Team Finn and breathing, but Rey wants to know the full extent of her RAW, ULTIMATE POWER and the truth about her heritage.

Finn can't confront Snoke and Rey alone. An unlikely equalizer, back on his prescription mood stabilizers and returning calls to his Space Therapist, however, shows up and extends his hand...

Yeah, it's honestly crazy how much is missing from this trailer. No Casino planet, no Rose, no Holdo (Laura Dern), no DJ (Benecio del Toro), no Domnhall Gleeson or Maz.

So much is rooted in Luke, Kylo & Rey, it makes me think that Johnson is holding a lot back.

If it's rooted in those characters... than can't one argue that him holding back on all those super minor characters just mean nothing?

I mean I wish we spend more time with Rey/Luke/Leia/Kylo/Snoke... instead we'll have to sit as Disney tries to redeem Phasma for some unknown reason.

Who do they think they're fooling with that "clever' editing at the end?

It's likely Finn or Poe that's Kylo's extended a hand towards, not Rey.

No way they'd spoil something that monumental in a trailer.

I mean, those minor characters are also there to play a role in the main characters’ journey. Even the redemption of Phasma will also play a role in the evolution of Finn, so...

Hayden got dealt a bad hand let's be honest. Freaking George Lucas managed to make Natalie Portman of all people look like a poor / terrible actress.

Definitely. Though I felt Natalie did a great job as the young queen in Menace. She seemed to be one of the only actors giving a damn lol.

All interesting. This bit, though. It isn't a matter of relative importance between father and mother. Leia indeed thought the father/son dynamic so important it might save Ben and encouraged Han to that effect. Leia and Ben having force connections, especially the shattering moment (for all) shared when Han died, might be the deciding factor for Leia.

"I wish I could just wish away my feelings."

I can't think of any actor that could make that line not seem forced and cringey.

Heck Samuel L. Jackson got literally nothing to work with in any of the three films and was reduced to being a walking prop for most of his screen time.

This trailer gave me a greater appreciation of Hamill as a voice actor. Listen to him talk in any interview (high-pitched, slightly nasally), and listen to him in this trailer. He's deep in that lower register, channeling a ton of bewilderment and frustration. He doesn't sound like himself, and he doesn't sound like OT Luke either. He sounds like someone who's wizened, hurting, and very tired.

Actually, there's many things to like about the PT. Hell, a couple of my favorite moments/scenes in the entire Saga are in the PT. There's just so many problems with the PT the good moments are bogged down like a anchor by them.

And honestly, at least speaking for myself, this is coming from a place of love. It's not like I WANTED the PT to suck. The contrary. I thought it had the PT a LOT of potential growing up. Take Anakin Skywalker. As annoying/disappointing as his character was in the PT, Kylo Ren is pretty much Anakin Skywalker done right. More like the kind of character they should have done in the PT to begin with.
