You really are a hoarder aren't you Retro?
At the current rate they can have Fossils funded within 7 days so it'll happen. Yay for new features!
FOSSILS!
Fossils have been in many Starbound mocks we've shared. But sadly they've been pushed back to a non-priority. They would add so much character to worlds. They'd tie into a lot of systems. I drew the penguins and really love 'em. But gimmie fossils!
Basically, theoretically (seriously this system is 0% built, just some art is done for it) you would use a tool to carefully extract fossils from the ground. There would be a lot of fossil types. Some really rare, others really common. They'd do a variety of things like add to the atmosphere, be used in crafting on all sorts of things like perhaps armor. They might help you obtain dna for a T-Rex pet. They might help you summon a boss. They could do a variety of things.
All these are my ideas and I don't know if they'd stick (they're off the top of my head, these ideas are NOT confirmations of anything). We'd have to see what we could do. But I can't be the only one as a kid who dreamed about finding a T-Rex fossil in the ground!

Here's a few examples of some things we've made. I'm sure that mammoth skull is recognizable. (Source)
So the only way to get in at the lowest price is to buy now and then wait indefinitely for a chance to play the game in beta? That... doesn't sound right. If they were even offering an alpha version or anything playable right now I'd get it but 'buy now and wait or pay more later' doesn't sit well with me.
That's how all pre-orders work, though. In this case, you even get access to Beta. With regular pre-orders, you might get a slight discount, but you'll get the game when everyone else gets it.
Why does this not sit well with you?
Hi guys,
A lot of people have been asking lately how we plan to support the game after release.
So I wanted to fill you in on what my plans are.
I know that now, more than ever, people are buying into games as an ongoing service. Players want a game that will evolve, improve and provide new experiences post release. And to many that ongoing service justifies the price of admission.
So, to respond to that demand. The Starbound team will continue to update the game for a *long* time after release. Not only that, but we'll be putting together a second team that will exclusively handle weekly, small scale, content updates whilst the original dev team works on bigger, more involved updates.
Eventually the original dev team will be ready to move on to a new project, whatever that may be - sequal, new IP, etc. When that happens, the secondary team will become the primary update team and I will personally continue to oversee and work on all updates to the game.
I will ensure there is *always* a team in place to continue updating the game for as long as people are playing it.
All of this is on top of us opening the game up massively for players to create their own content, both in game and via modding.
Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns I can answer.
Dat update cycle ffuuuuuuYeah, to be honest their current deal of $15, a Steam key, Beta, and OST is the best deal I've seen in indie gaming. Their plans to support the game post launch are well underway too. Modding alone is going to make this game explode beyond anything we can imagine right now.
i've never played terraria, and i'm mentioning that because this game's supposed to be quite similar to that?
anyway how's the online system going to be? do you only see other people who joined your game/lobby or it's something like an mmo?
so if i don't have any friends playing this, i will never see other people in this game?
well that kinda sucks![]()
i think they want to use steamworks for the steam version. They may have said but i think no drm for the other copy.Has there been any word on if the game will have any DRM?
That is correct, however, you can always play on a GAF server. I can guarantee you as we approach Beta or more importantly launch, someone will post an IP for all of GAF to play on. I wouldn't worry about the no friends thing.

Didnt they say that if You are playing online, You can meet other players on different planets too? Like if You would jump from server to server when You are landing on new planets.
PVP will be in the game, and there will most likely be pre-generated Arena Asteroids for organized game modes which will automatically keep score for you, etc.
The entire universe of experiences will be available in both Single player and Multi-player.
Servers will be able to hold as many players as they can based on thier power, and internet speed.
Character saves that are transferable from "local to server" and visa versa are planned and will be limited only by the choice of the server host. (New chars only, by item level etc.) "Think Neverwinter Nights" - Tiy
Servers can be launched from a dedicated server executable, but there may also be the option to launch the server from within the game client itself.
The games current net-code is already working, being called "smooth and seamless." - Rho
Server to Server portals to allow players to server hop mid-play are planned, but not set in stone.
Launching and joining LAN games will be relatively easy.
Players on a server are not required to be on the same planet at the same time, and may go off and explore different planets.
There are going to be various chat channels.
Party chat
Planet chat
Universe chat
"Maybe "Guild" or "Corp" chat, if we implement that by release." - Tiy
Server moderators will eventually (post release feature) be able to set up and control their own player created missions on the fly, possessing npcs and making them talk/behave/attack/etc, anything a player can do. So rather than dialogue choices, you can have a real dialogue.
A "Crafting Server" option where all items/tiles are available at start to just build with is being considered, but will only be available post release as to not reveal all things in the game to early to people who use it.
In terms of Server Protection Controls and Moderation, the following are mentioned on the Roadmap as being planned. "Multiple chat channels, muting, banning, group chatting, broadcast messages, identification and authentication by password and/or by user key, forced nick changing, klining, banning by IP or client fingerprint. User whitelists. User permissions in the form of Access Control Lists"
Anti-cheat functions are planned for moderation.
I'm sure we will have a server with 20+ people on it within an hour of the beta coming out if able.
Makes me remember the early Gaf Minecraft server tests, where we ended up spawning next to a cliff, so half the people fell into the ocean. Was so buggy too.
Our biggest frustration was probably the space station. It just wasn't working the way we wanted it to work in a multiplayer environment. Unless each player wasn't present 100% of the time the group played, they would miss the evolution of the space station. We ended up giving each player their own ship instead (though you can still invite other players to your ship). This turned out way better than what we originally had planned.
What will be player limit for GAF server? Will we be able to invite friends [trusted ones] from outside of GAF on it?![]()
Looking at the AMA, it sounds like the Space Station was scrapped.
Also, Planets are going to have one main Biome each, with sub-biome's (The example they give for sub-biome is an oasis on a desert planet)

Oh. That' sad.
I hope there's still some base building system. Then again, I guess we can just colonize planets and build huge structures like in Terraria anyway, so that's no big deal.![]()

When HaRyu was running the GAF server, GAFers and friends were welcome. We never had to boot anyone who was properly invited (there was an instance where a non-GAFer was banned, and in retaliation he posted the server's info publicly).
Server cap has been said to be whatever the hardware/connection can handle.

Hopefully the actual server side implementation is different from Terraria, but this is what my server was capable of:
Max # of players was somewhere around 17 to 20. Anything more than that, and the computer took a major hit in speed. Computer has had an upgrade or two since then, so in combination of a different server implementation, hopefully we can get more people online. My main concerns that I've always been vocal about is how much load does multiple planets (and when players are on different planets) cause on a computer. That will probably be the determining factor honestly, so no declared limit until we can do a stress test.
Server will be passworded (and IP hidden!). GAFfers obviously are welcome, and GAFfer friends are welcome too, although you do have to WARN ME when a friend is given access to the server. The crap that was happening in the waning days of the GAF Terraria server, has made me fairly paranoid, so the BANHAMMER will be used without provocation if I see unknown people on the server. Don't just let your friends on the server, you need to actually get my permission first. And friend of a friend? They have to still get an ok from me first before.
As for any other rules (griefing, PvP, dont touch these structures), I'll figure them out when we actually get the game.
I do have SOME ideas... we need to designate at least one planet as a battle/arena planet, and maybe a few planets as outlaw planets (planets where I don't give a damn what you do). But like I said, we'll wait for the game before I figure out what exactly we'll do with the server.
I wonder how small are they going to be, then? One biome per planet isn't very realistic, but better than having tundra-tropical-forest-desert all within a 600 tile area.
I hope one of the Stretch Goals is Star Trek style theme planets.
Like, an Ancient Rome planet. I don't know how that'd work... but I want it.
Oh. That' sad.

Also, I do wonder if planets are simulated while no one is on them. Asked on the AMA, but it being 16 hours after they first posted it, I have my doubts it will get answered.
Ps. That friend i'm talking about have already played DayZ long time ago with GAF'ers![]()
Wouldn't it be easier to just have all unknown planets be outlaw planets? Since there is technically an infinite amount.

I think it would be a better idea would be to declare a planet as an outlaw planet as we see fit. Its inherently easier to go from lawful to lawlessness, than lawlessness to lawful.
I'll worry about it when the game comes out, so we can have a discussion then.
Also needed to be pointed out, Retro will probably be the co-server admin again. And more than likely, he'll be on the server more than me, and then people will once again get confused and assume that it's Retro's server, not mine. *shakes fist*
I haven't heard a lot about Homeworlds in their production announcements. Are these the different planets the races are suppose to have originated at and each player is fleeing from or is it something else?
They've mentioned you can essentially colonize and reshape planets to your liking but if this is your homeworld, are you only allowed one?
Hopefully they can bring back the space station after launch. Though now I'm curious if these updates will be DLC or not.
Starbound IRC said:[10:15] <@Tiy> when you buy starbound
[10:15] <@Tiy> you get everything
[10:15] <@Tiy> fuck microtransactions
They have said that only planets that currently have players on them are simulated.
Hell, we all dug an underground highway from one end of the map to the other together. And not just a straight hallway through the terrain either; it used grey brick, red brick walls and had lighting at regular intervals. It was ridiculously well done, and all by hand. And it was everyone chipping in together. And I'll be damned if we didn't get a lot of use out of it too.
Unless something has changed, at some point in the game you can designate a planet as your "Home World" and it allows you much more customization, like terraforming or turning off monster spawning / events. For example, they've mentioned that some planets may be destroyed by disasters / meteor impacts; having a homeworld means that planet will never suffer such a fate, and you can build safely there. You can send NPCs to live there as well.
As far as the story goes, unless something has changed, the game begins with your character's planet being destroyed and you being one of the few survivors. You then crash land on an alien planet and have to find a way to refuel.
As far as DLC goes, they've said that they want to have weekly free updates while another team works on larger chunks of content. Whether those are free or not is up in the air, but the lead developer, Tiy, has mentioned several times how much he hates DLC;
The 'incident' we're referring to is a Non-GAFer (who was either waiting for approval or just found the thread) who started off okay, but got progressively worse as time went on. It started off with "Wait, how did Kaos get over there so fast?" (using a map hack), then he started draining oceans for fun, blowing peoples' stuff up, and using more and more hacks.
I personally was sick of him because you'd log in and start building, and he'd teleport to you and start adding onto your structure. Or building right next to it. Or chopping down trees you specifically planted or wanted to stay. Or just being in the way.
Anyways, after warning him multiple times, he was finally banned from the server. In retaliation, any time we posted the IP for the GAF server, he posted it on some public server agregate and we'd end up with 40 people jumping on and demolishing everything, triggering hard mode, griefing and looting... it was a mess.
Eh, dont get such a people, but i also dont get why would You cheat in MP FPS, ok it can be funny for 10-15 minutes, but people are playing on hacks for weeks/months ...
This time server IP should be passed via PM or in hash maybe?[/QUOTE]
One of the reasons I put in to do the Starbound OT is so we could keep the most up-to-date server info right at the top of the first post, in e-mail tags so it can only be seen by GAF members able to quote it.

After the incident, we started hiding it, but by then, I think the damage was done, and most of us stopped coming to the server.
In any case, hiding it for Starbound.

For those who missed that little venture on the GAF Terraria server, I was posting "jobs" on a signpost, and was offering rewards if you did/helped out in a job.
I don't actually recall giving any rewards for the highway though...
