Terraria better get back on the ball before it gets left in the dust. Starbound is looking to take the formula and add a nice deal of new things. Terraria was one of my favorite games, but I haven't touched the game in so long. It'll be nice to see the two sides in a friendly competition and see how the games morph because of it.
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that for the BETA they wanted most of the stuff done except save all the story stuff for the release. So if that's true (and not something I made up in my head) where does that leave your estimate for the BETA release?
Hi all,
Work continues on NPCs, weapons and so on.
Were a little entrenched in multi-day tasks at the moment, but therell be a lot to show off once those tasks are complete.
One of the things I did today was implement a bunch of new NPC projectiles. We had some fun doing it on stream and taking suggestions from stream chat.
You can watch the stream over at http://www.twitch.tv/tiyuri/b/413545532 Its around 3:30 hours long, recorded after midnight, so forgive my indiscretions.
Be warned though, this wasnt a planned affair, the stream is full of moments where Im working in another window for a good few minutes, bugs caused by reloading assets on the fly, my going to answer the door,
stream hiccups, that sort of thing. Id suggest skipping the first 10 minutes or so.
I think of all the new NPC projectiles the stream chat helped me add, icebreath was my fav

Oh and fish now scatter when startled. Were officially next gen!
There should be a Starbound update drinking game. Take a sip when something is described as boring, they worked on the website the whole day, the update mentions unrelated personal life, there's nothing to show because of multi-day projects.
Will there be a day/night cycle?
Will there be a day/night cycle?
Holy shit, this game has beautiful lighting. It even has pseudo-godrays, which I have a strange affinity for haha.
Hey guys,
Today a lot of work was done around ranged monster attacks. Tiy has a stream about it here: http://www.twitch.tv/tiyuri/b/414028486
Im still working on the 3d printer interface.
Kyren is pulling an all nighter and working furiously on something apparently. Im not sure exactly what.
Bartwe is neck deep in something. He was complaining about memory corruption and something, Im not sure I really want to know whats going on with that. Sounds messy. He did some minor bugfixes earlier in the day too.
Rho, George and legris and still hard at work making more art stuff! And Armagon is working on dungeons. All in all a pretty normal day.
Finally, were pleased to announce that weve made a trailer, you can find it here: trailer
Someone make sure Retro is ok! I think he may have exploded.
Oh please.
Retro already has FAR more intricate structures in Terraria. This is nothing. Except maybe for the stairs. He has a fetish for the stairs.
On the GAF server (if I'm running it), I'll probably have to give him a whole damn planet for him to build on. Preferably a huge planet. I don't want to keep giving him planets every couple of weeks.

I've noticed that they haven't had any mention of E3.
Many bricks would be shat if during E3, they announce a console/handheld/mobile version of Starbound.
In all likelyhood though, its not like they have the manpower/resources right now to even create a non-PC version.... but to be honest, nothing stopping them from at least making a deal with someone and have Starbound name dropped for a particular platform.
IIRC, there was some contest for indie devs to appear at E3. There was a wicked close tie between Starbound and another game, and I think the other game won.
Oh please.

Speaking of which. I wanted to see Retro's magnum opus, so I tried to connect to the Terraria GAF server (71.180.49.81, port 7777, right?) without any success, it just doesn't move past "connecting". I've even opened port 7777, still nada. I've not played Terraria online yet (indeed, nor offline for more than a few minutes), so it might be something I'm doing wrong.
Edit: OK, seems like I'm doing nothing wrong, because I was able to connect to a random server from terrariaonline-servers.com. Is the GAF server down or something? Thing is, it did return my pings...
Starbound was asked to bow out so that other smaller, less known devs would have a chance.
has Chucklefish actually released a game they have made before. I know they have published a few other games made by other people (such as wanderlust or stardew) but i can't seem to find a game they made before starbound.... which if they haven't made a game it would make it a little sad that they were asked to bow out because they were to well known and there isn't even a game of theirs to play yet lol.
b) a lot of big indie dev guys already acknowledge Starbound's existence, since they're allowing cameos of their characters in the game
This I did not know. Cool.
Its mentioned over in the original Starbound thread we had, but Tiy managed (or was in talks) to get the following cameos in:
Creepers from Minecraft
Monsters from Braid
Fluros from Vessel
Diggles from Dredmore
Note that these are actual cameos. Not some character sprite that looks like them. Tiyuri was going out of his way to get actual permission from those guys. I believe there may be more, but yeah, he got them cameos, you betcha.
Also note, this information is actually from nearly a year ago (last July). For all we know, he might have scrapped the cameo idea, but its still cool he actually got the permission.
This might make someone a nice wallpaper:

Hallo,
Today saw a couple of cool developments, particularly with some of our lovely contributors.
ArchVince has fixed the last few (known) bugsin his new terrain code, and has merged that in! This means that a couple of our terrain generators (mountain and canyon) look a lot better than they have been and are a lot more interesting and navigable. They look awesome, good job Arch!
Bartwe has been working on a very important change regarding status effects that will allow us to have lots of status effects defined by data rather than hard-coded, which will make working with status effects much easier. He’s now done with his change, but unfortunately not before losing about 12 hours and his sanity on a massive debugging session. It’s over though! I feel for ya man, good job.
Omni continues working on the 3d printer interface and associated non-interface code and is nearly done, as far as I know. Go omni! you can do it!
I continue to be embroiled in a multiple-day change for humanoid NPCs phase 1. I’ll have more to say about that once it’s in place, which hopefully will be late tomorrow. I’ve also made an update to our physics code that should allow other parts of the code to easily mod physics behavior temporarily, so that things like status effects can slow you or increase your mass or friction. It’s a pretty minor change, but hopefully it will go along well with the status effects stuff that bartwe is doing.
The artists continue their artisty work on things like ship improvements, legris continues his work on intro sequences, and Tiy has been experimenting with a cool new “ship design” that we’re not sure will make it in or not, but damn is it cool!
Aaaaand…. I’ve saved the most important for last. We have a new code contributor named “jordo” that has been helping us lately, and he’s super smart and capable, and has already being a huge help. He has been doing some monster AI work and, just recently, implemented the most advanced, most important feature in all of Starbound…
Are you ready???
The fishes swim away from you!!!

Speaking of which. I wanted to see Retro's magnum opus, so I tried to connect to the Terraria GAF server...
Sundays are relatively slow days at Chucklefish, we all work such silly long hours during the rest of the week, Sunday is our chance to get some chores done outside of the game.
That said we still put a bunch of hours in. Sunday is also our day in which we experiment with adding things to the game that might not be in the beta, or even the final game. Little side projects that arent on the todo list and can only be completed on following Sundays.
I took that opportunity today to experiment with space stations. The idea being that once you are pretty far into the game youll be able to register an organisation/guild that will get its own spacestation.
Think Guild Hall in an MMO.
![]()
I added our old Spacestation to the game as a test (we had spacestations early on and switched them out for personal/upgrade-able ships.)
Exploring this huge structure was massively atmospheric and made me pretty positive about the idea.
![]()
So that was my Sunday experiment.
The rest of the team continue to work on those big multiday tasks, so not a huge amount to report there. Though Kyren and Bartwe have made big progress on theirs and I might be able to show some stuff off from that tomorrow or the day after.
Hope you had a good weekend guys
For those who are curious, updated NeoGAF Terraria map pack:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/cdtwl1j25aed4qq/NeoGAFTerrariaServerMaps.zip
GAF003 is the more recent map. GAF001 is the more playful one, with the really evil Applejack demonspawn statue.
And I guess, I need to post this in the Terraria thread too...
As HaRyu mentioned, my best stuff is on my home server. I've never been able to get the port forwarding garbage to work since my router is some weird Verizon-specific modem/router combo. That, and I'm paranoid as shit when it comes to security and I don't like installing that sort of stuff.
Unfortunately, the world file is 11.1 MB, a tad too large to send casually. Maybe I should stick it up on Mediafire or something, I dunno.
For some reason 001 and 002 didn't want to load in TEdit, may have to just try them 'for real'. 003 loaded however and HOLY SHIT, I forgot how much I did on that map. I just remembered my floating castle. I completely forgot the desert bridge, jungle ruins (they're HUGE), the two jungle safe houses, the graveyard with snarky tombstones, Crater Lake lodge, the Arena (oh man, we had so much fun in there, but who changed it?), the Tutorial Town, all the bridges EVERYWHERE, little towers and castles all over the place, the Alchemy Tower, the HUGE underwater complex, the dungeon pyramid, the gold pyramid (somebody broke all my traps though)... so much crap in there.
Also, it's kind of painful to see the scars left by Final Kaoss. The giant hacked-dynamite pit to hell (that's when we knew he was bad news, but we let it slide), the single-brick platforms that just attach themselves to EVERYTHING, the drained oceans... he really was a selfish fuck.
I'm gonna have to t-edit some of this stuff into my Home World, I forgot how cool some of that stuff was. Makes the wait for 1.2 even harder... I think this time, I might just build online exclusively...
Edit: Holy crap, the apartment complex was huge... I forgot about the world map at the bottom too.
Well, if they make it in, GAF will definitely have one.
I really like how they're putting their heart and soul into this game... They seem like really competent devs and they really care about their game.
I'd love to have it! You could also upload it to Google Drive or whatever, that's what I do with the Guild Wars 2 gamepad stuff. I think free space there is on the gigabyte range.
Whoa, didn't notice all that, I have to explore a bit more. I loaded it up as an alternative to actually connecting to the GAF server (since I apparently can't), and checked out the tutorial area (which was AMAZING, orders of magnitude better than the non-tutorials of the game, and beautiful too!) and the huge GAF tower. Since I've not played Terraria for any measurable amount of time, though, I'm armed with the Copper Sword in one of the chests, so the first lowly earth worm killed me.I'll keep exploring for all that stuff, I'll use it as a checklist.
![]()
Damn, I had no idea. I was actually wondering if letting the server open to anyone wouldn't mean having it vulnerable to vandalism. :/
Yeah, I may have to upload it for you. Not sure what the bandwidth cap is... we'll see.
For what it's worth, there's tons of equipment you can pillage just lying around. GAF003 was sort of the 'best' server we had, and so a lot of stuff is sitting in there.
As for finding all of that stuff, all of my stuff is left of spawn. For whatever reason I didn't go to the right. I think it's because Kaoss drained the ocean and I didn't want to build anywhere near him.
The problem with Kaoss wasn't that he was vandalizing anything. It wasn't that he logged in loaded up with cheats and hacks so he could phase through things, teleport anywhere, produce any material or item he wanted (including dynamite). It wasn't even that he did obnoxious stuff like drain the oceans or blast giant holes to hell (both of which you can see in GAF003).
The problem with Final Kaoss was that you'd be building something and he'd suddenly appear next to you and start building RIGHT ON TOP OF YOU. You could be building a castle and he's start building a giant, empty box attached to it. He'd chop down trees you were purposely keeping for courtyards or decoration (he could generate wood!).
His buildings were all huge, empty boxes. No style, no decoration, barely any furniture.
If you see a house with nothing in it and no style at all, those are his. Anything that's just a single block wide platform, that's his. Anything just attached on to someone's house; that's his.
My big floating castle, he attached a giant platform that spans half the world. I tried to pretty up the parts of it near my base, but it's just a huge, lame platform.
Sorry if this post gets doubled or tripled, E3 critically hit GAF the instant the MS pre-show stated.
Short one today.
Jordo continues his awesome work on monster scripting, adding a few new attacks and behaviors to the small flying creatures we have currently. Good work
Bartwe has done some awesome work with damage, working out the specifics of how cooldowns work across different damage types, as well as adding a new damage database and doing a ton of great organizational work with how damage sources interact with things. Really cool!
Tiy has done some cool apex dungeon work! I cant wait to see it in action.
Aaaaaaaand .
*checks calendar*
I may have missed the 10th of June here.
More tomorrow (today).
(Edit) To make up for my lateness, heres a picture of what rhos been working on:

The days go by so fast.
So how about those E3 conferences?
I think were getting to the point now that hardware is starting not to matter anymore.
Sure the graphics might be a little bit better, but there seems to be very few nextgen games that couldnt have been produced on current gen systems.
It used to be that each time a new generation of console popped up it allowed for the creation of entirely new gameplay experiences. From what Ive seen so far the experiences seem to be exactly the same with slightly shinier paint.
Things have stagnated.
I dont know about you but Im tired of playing the same old games over and over again. I want new hardware to drive innovation in software.
That said, well done to Sony for allowing indies to self publish on the ps4. Its a good first step.
Anyway!
Bartwe completed a ton of work on status effects. We can now apply all sorts of awesome status effects to monsters. Its super easy to make new ones too.
I made burning and poison status effects this evening with the system, both with some nice visual FX
![]()
![]()
Burned creatures give off flames, and when the burning runs out, a puff of smoke.
Poisoned creatures produce little green bubbles.
Kyren has nude humanoid NPCs running around in the game, shell be clothing those really soon and giving them weapon support. Id like to do a video of a populated village once some more of their behaviors are done, if I can find a spare moment.
Omni has all but completed the 3D printer, which is a huge part of the game. Screenshots of that once I configure the interface for it. Which is a small task.
Legris has completed the human intro.
George and Rho continue to work on weaponry, but theyve almost finished the preset weaponry collection. And its huge! Our wonderful contributors are working with them on that.
Were also working on a new suggestion part of the site, where youll be able to upvote/downvote your fav suggestions Reddit style so we can see what everyone wants most.
Cheers guys
- edit -
Right after I posted this, the sun went down on the world I took the second screenshot in. That world also happened to have an aurora borealis. It was very pretty. So heres that:

Hey guys,
Today the pixel printer was finished for the most part. This was a big change with lots of moving parts so it’s nice to see it complete.
Well done Omni!
![]()
Weapon wise we’re at around 350/360 tiered (ore) weapons complete. I wish I could show them to you, they’re very cool. But this is exactly the kind of thing I shouldn’t spoil.
Here’s a little sample though:
![]()
Here’s a mockup of the new suggestion page you’ll see on the site some time soon.
![]()
Don’t worry, the people working on this aren’t the same lot working on the game. It won’t slow anything down.
I look forwards to seeing what everyone’s fav suggestions are though.
