Starbound now available for preorder [Up: Stretch Goals]

So good.

So it seems the tentacle will also be the main enemy for the main storyline? The tentacle planet has been around for awhile, and it would be wacky to have it as the main antagonist.

Could possibly be race specific? I'm not sure how the storyline will function per race.

Maybe just for the humans. Or maybe every planet is a tentacle planet and they just haven't awakened yet. I don't want to know until I find out in the game.

That would be sick.

Imagine, all the races of the universe coming together to stop one force.

Cool.

That would be cool, but also kinda suck. After certain conditions are met, a planet becomes tentacle infested. In other words, tentacles are Starbound's "Terraria Corruption".

I never really was that thrilled about Corruption in Terraria.

Yeah, I'm not too favorable on "global threats" in games like these. They would become really old, really fast.

22nd June Progress
Ah, another daily update!

Today our coders have been hard at work fixing bugs, cleaning up code in places that needed it, and messing with DirectX stuff. They’re also still working on that “super advanced” fish A.I. and doing more with flying NPCs.

We have also been working on craftable furniture. Each “tier” will have it’s own unique theme with a unique look.

Here’s a sneak peak of one furniture set:

Hope you liked our little update and see you tomorrow!
Didn't even think about comparing corruption and tentacle planets. But yeah, I hope it's not like Terraria corruption too.

Since the furniture is based in tiers, and we know what the ores are, we can safely assume that's either the Kyrenite or Plutonium set. Since I think all of the materials in that specific column are fuels (Coal, Uranium, Plutonium and Solarium), I'm gonna have to say Kyrenite... or one of the ores we haven't seen yet.

I don't think I've gotten my head around the fact that there will be so much furniture to build with... Terraria was so limited in both brick and furniture and I managed to build a lot with that... with Starbound, I have so many options, I don't think I'll ever stop building.

I don't really trust that ore sheet. It seems so... seedy. Since Starbound is an indie game, how does something like that get leaked?

It's legit. Later in that thread, one of the testers takes responsibility for it; they were testing to make sure it's colorblind-friendly and he passed it along to someone who was unreliable. One of the artist later jumps in to comment on the names changing, but doesn't deny it outright (though she does say it is 'old', so...).

But yeah, it's legit.

That's pretty exciting to read. Can't wait to see the GAF server. :)

Wow. Leaking something from an indie game seems a) a really jerkish thing to do, and b) pretty stupid, considering he's the only one that could do it. I guess some people will do anything for their 5 minutes of attention.

Hi guys,

So Sunday is supposed to be our day off, which of course means we spend the time working on Starbound.

Everyone has ‘Secret sunday projects’ underway that I couldn’t describe to you if I wanted to, because I don’t know what they are.

It’s a fun way to end the stress of the week and have a break from the important stuff. Bartwe in particular is teasing me, referring to his project as [redacted].

Kyren has more or less completed Direct 3D support, which turned into a much bigger task than she’d hoped. But it’s almost done now and very worth the trouble.

Here’s a super heavily work in progress Avian intro, we’ve been working on adding additional sound effects to it today (though they’re not in this video).

Avian intro.

I think this might be the last one I show off, given the spoilery nature of it. Though they do appear in the first few seconds of the game.

Our web monster is also working on getting the new suggestions section of the site up and running today/tomorrow.

Oh man, I feel this game is SUPER close to beta. #believe.

The Avian intro is awesome. I hope they show the Hylotl one off, as I'll probably do my beta playthrough as one.

Pretty bummed that they did a whole crowdfunding thing, and the poor bastards are still crunching like they work for Activision or something. Hope they actually let themselves have some time off now and again

Yesterday's update. Sorry I couldn't post it:

Hi guys

Today we set about revamping the examination system. Where examining an object used to bring up a tool tip with a description of the object in it (still accessible when the object is obtained). Your character will now comment on the object directly. Not only that but each race will comment on objects differently. This leads to some vary interesting scenarios where, for example, you might ask your friend playing as an avian to examine an object you found in an Avian tomb because their knowledge might be greater than your own.

investigate.png

Of course this means I need to write 6 descriptions for everything you can investigate. Which is well over 6000+ descriptions. So you can guess what I spent the day doing.

I managed to complete over 800 so far. Quite a way to go on that then!

We’ve also been running a bunch of tests on D3D mode, completing the last of the ore based furniture, working on beds, finishing the next intro, adding a ton of new sounds and more.

Not so keen on the investigation idea...

Huh. Is this investigation thing just flavor text, or an element of possible puzzle aspects in dungeons? The latter could be cool if done right/sparingly, though it might be annoying for a solo player.

It kinda breaks the immersion for me. I don't really want my character talking and saying stuff, I want to figure it out on my own.

I like it. It reminds me a lot of point and click adventures, where examining something would result in your character musing aloud about it. When the comments were character-appropriate, I feel they added quite a bit of charm and personality. If done well, this could be the case here too.

It could work in a game like that because you're taking on the role of a certain character. In Starbound, my character is essentially en extension of me. It would be kinda weird and a bit jarring in my opinion. You also run the risk of having the character say something dumb and related to something like My Little Pony (which I seriously hope does not appear in the game in any way, shape, or form).

I guess I'm just used to MMOs where your charcter still has sound bits even though it is "an extension of the player".

That's, um... like the most random concern ever. O_o

I dunno dude. Some people that support this games are the ones that wear fedoras, tapout shirts, and fanny packs and go around thinking they're better than everyone because they have "class". At least that's what I've kind of observed on the official forums., and since it's an indie game, one of the devs could be a brony or something.

The investigation text is literally just a description of what you're looking at. Some races, when investigating objects relevant to their race, have a more detailed investigation description.

It is not making your character say anything goofy, unless it's some kind of pun or reference to the object. I doubt very much there will be anything annoying.

June 25:
Waz everyone! I guess it’s my turn to supply you with the daily update!

It’s a small-ish update today – Tiy continues his description marathon. So far all of the Apex objects are done and each have 7 different descriptions for every race, which we tested ingame today. It was actually pretty fun! A lot of the objects have descriptions that tie into each other – examining a cupboard as an Apex would reminisce about a past rebellion, but examining it as a Glitch would notice a hidden camera inside.

Even though D3D was implemented yesterday, it had a couple of bugs that needed to be combed over, so thanks to Kyren it’s totally completely in and working now. I tried it myself a few hours ago – the performance is very noticeable as a Windows user.

Furniture work continues – between George and I, we’ve completed all of the tier-based furniture bar the final tier, which we’re trying to find a theme suitably awesome enough to merit the highest tier. Each tier will have a basic set of craftable furniture, and we’ve tried to get as many themes as we can into it, ranging from antique cast-iron, to futuristic sci-fi, to spikes and eyeballs. The sets consist of: Chair, Table, Switch/Console, Bed, Light and Door. I also did a bit of work on the player ships, which are one away from being completely finished.

That’s all for today! Thank you, good night!

Hello guys.

A super busy day!

Direct 3d / Direct X support is now complete. It’s made a huge difference on cards that don’t support OpenGL all that well. A massive performance increase. So that’s great.

Legris is working on the Floran intro, which is suitably creepy.

Rho has completed the final tier of ore based objects.

George is starting on the last of the dungeon art.

I continue to write descriptions. I’m now at well over 2000 and completely entrenched in lore.

Bartwe worked on the way NPCs/Monsters are spawned in procedurally generated dungeons.

Kyren has moved onto some of the leveling/scaling mechanics after finishing D3D support.

Omni has completed a pose system for player characters.

Today I also heard Malukah’s first draft of her Starbound song. It’s absolutely wonderful!

So many things finishing up! I think they can easily fly through the descriptions. The only person who is really seeming to be under heavy workload is bartwe.

Tiy started an "Ask us anything" thread on the official forums that he's unlocking when he has time to answer questions and locking when he doesn't. I've pasted a few bits of info here, and there's more on the forums.

You posted a way cool picture of a space station awhile ago. Is there any chance we will see these implemented in-game, even if it's post launch?

Tiy said:
It's currently a weekend project. That means we sometimes work on it in our free time and it could well end up in the game.

well I will ask the most provocative question....why all the fluff? I know you guys are trying to make your game perfect, which I love....but why the extra instead of the actual ground work? I think if this was done, we would already have a beta...

Tiy said:
The ground work stuff is always being worked on. There's usually at least two programmers adding essential features at any one time. Given that they're major features however, we tend not to post about them daily. "We did a little bit more work on..." doesn't make for an interesting daily post.

We of course do also add things that aren't absolutely essential for the game to function. But calling them fluff understates their importance. A game with only the bare minimum of features is a game without a soul. The impression you get when you play the game for the first time can be driven just as much by small, unessential features as big, required groundwork.

Who decides what is and isn't required anyway?

We have an experience we want to deliver. The features we choose to add ARE essential to creating that experience. It's a question of tone, charm, atmosphere. These are the things that take a game to the next level.

Will the Novakids be ready come beta? Or should I be looking at an alternative to play on until the Live release is ready?

Tiy said:
The Novakids are going to be a release feature rather than a beta feature. I don't think we have time to get them into beta I'm afraid.

And here's the June 27th update:

Hey all,

One of those posts where we’re all continuing with larger tasks today I’m afraid.

I continue to finish up the description system. I’m almost done now (I skipped sleep last night to do it).

It’s adding so much life to the game, I’m excited to have it finished.

Kyren continues to work on how planets change at different levels. This is a large task because it ties into almost every part of the game. The kind of drops you find, the ore distributions, monsters and so on.

Bartwe finished some new consumable functionality that allows us to finish up the rest of the food items.

Omni is finishing up the sleep system, hopefully that will be in place tomorrow.

George is working on finishing up the final dungeons.

Legris is tearing through the intro content.

Rho is working on various animation work that’s needed finishing for a while.

Also I’ve set up a Q&A thread on the forums. Take a look at that here:

http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/ask-us-anything.24965/

I’m falling asleep as I type. So I’d better leave it here.

Goodnight!

I kind of feel bad for the insane hours they're pouring into this game (sleep skipping and so on). I know from experience time flies when you're in a project you're doing of your own volition (the only time I took a programming project in my spare time, an Android application for a friend's company, I did it all in a single, 9-hour sitting on a Sunday. I didn't even stop to eat). Still, you have to wonder what long-term effects that kind of dedication can have. I remember the creator of Dust: An Elysian Tail reporting how he fell into a near-depression when it was finally finished, after pouring his soul into it for three years.

I hope/guess this would be diminished in this case, since this is a project that can be improved/worked on/expanded in a myriad of ways (space stations is but an example). In fact, I wonder what kind of post-launch schedule they're considering (whether more, free work in order to keep moving copies, paid add-ons, straight sequels, or a completely new project). They probably aren't thinking of that now, and it seems they're throwing everything including the kitchen sink intot he project, barely leaving out anything they've thought of.

Hi Guys,

It’s been a tough/frustrating day in Chucklefish land.

My internet connection has been out most of the morning and Kyren’s car broke down whilst she was on the freeway, causing her to spend pretty much the entire day fixing her car by the side of the road.

That said, the day wasn’t a total wash.

I’m still on those descriptions. Just half of Glitch and human left to go. Molly pointed out to me today that Starbound contains as much text as a novel. Which is pretty cool.

Bartwe completed a bunch of additions to consumables to give them additional configurable affects. He’s moving onto a system for applying one item to another. This will give us things like dyes and repairing items.

Omni is making a quick drawables change to enable us to do special things our sleep system.

Rho put most of the new furniture in the game.

George is completing the Hylotl dungeons (once he’s finished the first one up, i’ll put up the Hylotl introduction post.)

Legris is still bumping the intro art along.

And here’s a random screenshot because it’s been a little while since I posted one

Is anyone else bothered by the June 28th screenshot having two different grass colors?

The foreground grass is brown while the background grass is vibrant green.

Doesn't bother me at all.

You should see the houses in my neighborhood. Half of the front lawns are brown, while the other half are vibrant green.

There's even some lawns that are both brown and green. :P

June 29th Update:
Hello again!

Today we’ve mostly worked on little things. A few members of the team are working on a secret project for Starbound that the other members do not know about (a weekened thing we sometimes do for fun). We’ve done eating animations and given consumables various visual properties. And there has been a lot of hard work done on the seemingly endless descriptions for the vast amount of objects in the game.

We’ve also been working on a Hylotl village which has been a lot tougher than we originally thought. With a style based on Japanese architecture it’s very hard to mimic those kinds of curves, shapes and details into our tile system. But we’re still on it! Hopefully we’ll have something to show there soon.

Anyways, that’s it for today. See you tomorrow!
