I've re-watched this a few times now. Absolutely smitten with the design of just about everything they showed and the gunplay looks much improved over Fallout 4. Ship stuff all looks great and the creation, be it characters, ships or settlements looks great.

I wish I didn't have to wait but another half year of polish will only make what I just saw better.

Damn that borderline feels like a Call of Duty paced game. Love the ragdoll on the enemy after death. Good stuff.

Just rewatched the trailer in 4k and somehow it looks worse than it did on the stream. i think the 4k stream actually exposes some of the flaws in the visual fidelity. It's still a generational leap for Bethesda over Fallout 4, but some areas look really rough. I saw shadows entirely missing in one shot. The city doesn't really look that impressive. Foliage areas look really rough especially when compared to current gen games like HFW.

But then you get shots like this and im like wtf this is next gen. Very schizo game.

The problem is you are looking at promotional shots. I am not convinced that those shots will be indicative of the gameplay. They game is basically in the polishing stages right now since it's due less than a year from where we are.

They had the perfect opportunity to show the gameplay off in its best light today, and it basically looks last-gen. Better than Fallout 4, but there are countless last-gen games that look better. Those scenic shots look fine but it's not representative of what the game actually looks like from what we've seen thus far.

The NPCs and character models are all certainly last-gen, and the animation in true Bethesda fashion is very stilted and unconvincing.

The comparison to something like cyberpunk seems appropriate here. It's still a GOOD looking game overall, certainly great art direction. But technically it's unimpressive.

I re-watched a few times and this game is going to be incredible. I am way more hyped now than before. Just need GOW:R to round out 2022 and then MS showed that they have 2023 first half locked and ready.

The game itself is what I expected, fallout in space and if the story is good there no doubt it will be a game I enjoy.

The visuals are pretty varible.

We're a far cry from meadowlands like Skyrim and the Fallout destroyed look.

This game is going to be a massive time sink, I can already see spending hundreds of hours.

You are right when you say they had the perfect opportunity to show it off right now and they didn't. The way they presented it seemed rushed, especially the first minute of footage. The 2nd mistake was they likely demo'd it on maybe mid range specs which last I heard this was also coming out on PC?

They should have maxed it out and im sure it would have looked breath taking. I see tons of people posting screens of Cyberpunk 2077 for example and it looks nothing special, but if you turn off the DLSS and max out everything it really shows how good it looks. IMO they just aren't using it to its fullest potential. For once I wish these developers would give a big FU to hardware specs and go all out, for a game like this you better go all out or don't even try.

Looks solid visually, great in some ways even. But if it's only 30 FPS that's gonna be a bit disappointing. If it keeps the framepacing and jerkiness it seems to have on top of that, it's going to be really jarring and disruptive to my immersion. Some of the animations could be a bit smoother, too, such as on that companion robot; just because it's a robot doesn't mean it needs to be jerky on top of the general jerkiness of the game as it is right now.

But....the actual gameplay looks very ambitious. The things that stuck out the most to me are the outpost and ship-building features, and the fact you can hire people to help with them, gives some 4X strategy game influence in there. I didn't care as much for the gameplay, and the resource-gathering stuff (at least the way in which you do it) doesn't seem any different from games like No Man's Sky. They also talked about 1,000 planets to fully explore which is....a LOT of content.

TBH tho, breadth of content isn't necessarily what I care too much about with RPGs, it's a question if that content is genuinely good. It sounds like Bethesda are using some random content generator for a lot of those 1,000 planets most likely, random seed generation or whatever to populate them, so it's actually a crapshoot as to how fulfilling quality-wise it's going to be to explore those planets, or anything outside of the main content that you know is hand-crafted from scratch by the team. The story's also going to matter a lot as well, and how they do what they do with it, particularly with Bethesda's storytelling template which is more open-ended than most other RPGs.

If it turns out to be too ambitious, though, it could cause a strain on the engine. Which already looks like it's being pushed beyond its means with the framepacing issues. I hope it can deliver on those ambitions; it's still easily one of the games I'm most looking forward to in 2023.

Strongly doubt they demoed this on mid-spec PCs; why intentionally cripple your presentation when you can use high-end hardware (and that's assuming this was captured on PC; I was under the impression it was Series X footage).

These guys want to show their stuff off in the best light, so I'm guessing right now there are a lot of optimization issues with the engine to fix up because the framepacing gave it a very jerky presentation and that's completely aside it being 30 FPS (you can have a smooth framepacing even with 30 FPS).

Watched it again a few more times, keep picking out more details I missed. I think deep divers like me are going to eat sleep and breathe this game. I've never put less than 300 hours into a Bethesda game and in most it's over 500 hours. If mods take off for this game like they did for Fallout 4 I can see myself putting 5K hours into this over the years.

I seriously have a feeling this is going to be my GOAT.

Hopefully by the time this drops my next hardware upgrades will be installed.

I personally do not generally enjoy their games. I find them incredibly boring and tedious and very shallow. You basically need to get immersed in the world and that's the large selling point, but with all the wooden NPCs and uncanney valley it's very hard for me to get immersed.

But that being said, Starfield as a concept interests me a lot more than their other games so I will give it a shot.

lmao I wonder if gaf is full of kids or casual players??? Bethesda produce some of the best wrpgs ever and even Skyrim to this day has more immersion and replayability than a lot of modern open worlds, like Horizon 1&2 for example.

Graphic Modes. People dont get it. You can't have a jump from 1080p to 1440p-2160p AND double the Framerate WHILE looking better than last gen. 30-60 fps alone needs double the Power and thats all there is.

one x to series x is pretty much 2x Gpu Speed. So at same graphics series x can do 60 instead of 30 fps. thats it. But not everything at the same time. Youll need a 3080TI for that aka doubling once more.

So it will be 4k ish 30 fps mode and a performance mode probably 1080-1440p 60fps.

Most realistic scenario.
