The amazing thing is that 40 million is in the same league as consoles, yet the number won't just reset every generation.

I don't think they've announced it since the end of 2009, when it was 2.2 million.

I'd guess it's somewhere between 3-4 million now.

2 Million was the record being broken when MW2 released. But they also said Halo Reach beat Halo 3 Record, I'm not sure what that means since MW2 had already broken Halo 3 record.

That's a point but I assumed that Steam support would help with that.

I'm curious as I've never known anyone to come back to Steam and make an entirely new account.

I did. I had an account with only HL2 on it. Didn't mess with HL2 for a couple years and Steam was still new to selling other games. Forgot the info completely. So I started a new one one day when Lost Planet 1 was on sale for $5.

CoD games go by a 24 hour period though no?

Don't know honestly but this was only a day or two after the game came out so as massive as that number was it didn't really surprise me.

Does this count people who have it on background? If so it's not that impressive.

But if it's 4 million playing something then that's impressive.

I've been using my handhelds more lately since my modem blew up for quite a few days.

I registered when it first came out but then for some reason it Steam wouldn't accept my Half-Life cd key so I gave up PC gaming until around 2006. That's when I wanted to start playing Counter Strike again.

Good times.

Oh, and:

fukken newb ^^

At least I have a beastly play time. I ended up giving Steam a try when I was in the mood to revist a few of my old favories (like Deus Ex and Max Payne) and I was blown away by the quality of the service. A year later I got my very first gaming PC and I haven't looked back!

Bah you've got me beat by 4.2 hours. I've slacked off a bit after I finished Deus Ex, but Dead Island will boost that by 15-20 hours or so probably on Tuesday.

I changed my Steam avatar yesterday to this. (From a cropped screenshot i took.)

I'm keeping my GAF avatar though (which is also a cropped screen shot i took of one of my Demon's Souls characters... with a camera no less). I know the only way people remember people around here is by their avatars.

I'm also logged into Steam whenever my PC is on which is 24/7.

That's weird. I thought I had a day 1 account. Were you in some sort of beta or something?

My original account is 2003. I don't use it anymore. 2003 steam account means you were playing CS 1.6, and you had a 4-6 digit steam id.

Is there an attach rate statistic for steam as well? I would imagine that would be interesting to see in comparison to consoles.

I love you steam, even your bad green UI back in the day.

Oh man, that UI was uglier than sin...

How many guys here registered in 2004? :p Steam has come a long way.
Haha, I have an account with one of the first numbers on it. In fact my steam ID was so low that most people believed it to be fake when I played in CS mixes.

September 12th 2003. (Sorry GhostRidah)

Anyway, 4 million users? It's only going to go up and DOTA 2 is going to be the next spike. If anything Steam is fast becoming more like a gaming social network as much as anything thanks to the ongoing community feature updates etc.

Same.

It's actually my main IM program!

While I'm not a big Steam fan, it makes a good IM client. Using it mostly to talk to old VFDC buddies.

Plenty of Steam-using folks will buy EA games on Origin though. There are some folks who say "Steam or no sale" (my guess is most of them are here), but there are folks like myself who will buy games several places.

That said, I won't buy EA games because I don't like EA. Only if they come out with a good Alpha Centauri 2 will I change my mind.

Dota 2 will be death of Steam for a day or so, methinks.
Or intermittently if the International is anything to go by, heh.
.

Total Steam babbeh in comparison to some.

And 67% or so of that is all in the Source SDK (what a blissful 1,487 hours that's been :p).

Well deserved.

Had an account at HL2's release, hated it, hardly ever used it (outside a few rounds of CS:S). Forgot my old account name and email, but here's my new one:

Steam Rating: 8.3

I'm sure the playing time will go up with Dead Island.

I was in the first 2000 people to sign up. My SteamID is around 13XX, been a while since I checked.

Registered March 26th 2004 and my rating is 7.7. Is that good?
Chinner said:
stema ratings are based on how much you play. it doesn't actually matter. unless ur trolling me.
Most notably, how much you play of games you own on Steam, not launch through Steam.

The_Inquisitor said:
What caused it to spike?
50% off on Call of Duty games and the Modern Warfare 3 pre-order is now up.

Black Ops also has a free weekend going on, which could be an even bigger driver.

I wanted to patch Counter-Strike to 1.6 and it required me to install Steam.
