Steam Machines to launch during GDC 2015, Controller design finalized, SteamOS ready

I hope someone makes an inexpensive streaming box like a PS TV. Would be perfect so I can put them throughout the house on big screens.

How does the newest controller actually look?

Probably similar to this prototype but with an analog stick in place of the "d-pad," and different ridges on the left trackpad.

IIRC they made that decision based on feedback that the left trackpad worked surprisingly well for digital input, but didn't make a good analog stick replacement due to the amount of travel needed and lack of a recentering mechanism.

Freakin' finally! Been waiting for the damn controller to come out for ages.

I'm interested in how exactly it's going to be connected. Wireless USB dongle, Bluetooth, something else? I'd also love to know if it will work with devices other than the PC like phones or tablets like the Nvidia Shield.

I wouldn't be surprised if support eventually came for it through 3rd party programs, but if it came with that kind of support out of the box that would be awesome.

I'm waiting for the final Steam controller to just be this

What would be the point? Every PC gamer already has their Xinput pad of choice.

Because it started out as this crazy unique design with a touchscreen in the center and neat button placement, and then every revision has gotten further and further into bog standard territory. The latest revision even has a Thumbstick instead of a D-Pad!

I'm sorry I have to explain this, I was trying to be sad and sarcastic since I'm depressed at how normal the Steam controller looks now.

The touchpads actually work as phenomenal DPads apparently, makes a hardware one completely redundant.

I wish Valve would just make an Android client, there are a considerable amount of streaming devices capable of decoding their stream.

The Razer Forge TV was just announced at CES and suppose to come out in Q2. http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-systems/razer-forge-tv

It's suppose to include a program that works like the Nvidia Shield so that you can stream games at high resolution at low latency, but their solution is suppose to be platform agnostic, so AMD people can use it too.

There is no way they can launch this system without Half Life 3. Without a major ip, this will be forgotten about at release.

The "I want to walk into a store/press a button online to buy a single box that just works" market. I'm skeptical that Valve can actually make such a box, but I see a lot of people (Mostly outside of GAF) who want to play some PC games, but just don't know how or are unwilling to go through the learning process. All that being said if they don't get enough games running on Linux then this won't solve that problem.

I just don't think they'll care very much. That market is already buying PS4s and XB1s.

I dunno, it's a lot like the Android console problem in a different form. Is it attractive enough to compete with a 399 console that just gets cheapernfornthe same audience? That's where I'm skeptical.

Nice, I was hyped about that touchscreen, but they removed it because someone with virtual reality goggles wouldn't see it, so... I guess they know what they do. Can't wait for Steam Controller + Steam VR + Half-Life 3.

I'm kinda glad I haven't bought a controller yet. I didn't think the Steam controller was going to be finished for a while.

I'd love to see a $99 controller/steamstick bundle that I could just plug into my tv, and use as a steam streaming receiver.

Zero. You can already buy a Steam Machine.

Only thing missing is the controller. I dont see that making any difference.

And the thing is, I don't see anything coming out that's better than the Alpha.

The Alpha is a solid deal.

$550 gets you a decent little bit of kit. No, it's not an amazing system with kickass hardware. But with the OS license and the controller, it's about $450 then for a kick-ass little mini box with okay specs.

I'll bet we won't see any Steam Machines with similar power for less than $400, and I'd bet they won't look as good, either.

Give me the controller. I'm hoping that along with the launch of this it brings new features to the regular client like the controller api. If Valve makes their controller api support all mainstream controllers then I'd be extremely happy.

I guess I can't really judge because I've never used one, but I'm really skeptical of the touchpad controller. Just seems like it'd control very weirdly.

So do they know who they are making these Steam machines for? Everytime this pops up i gotta ask who is the target audience?

People who want to play PC games in their living room.
It's not trying to get a new batch of Steam users, it's for the people who already use it.

EDIT: Also, is that even a reputable source?

It lives!

Do you think the Rift will help sell Steam Machines to the mainstream? I mean it seems like it would be a great way to get the less tech savvy consumers into it.

The timing does seem quite convenient, yes. I expect many of them to be marketed as "rift machines".

I'm really interested in the steam controller. I'll probably use it for kbm games, and the XB1 controller for everything else.

Adding an analog stick instead of a D-Pad is kind of where they lost me. Combine that with the idea of the Steam Machine itself being flawed and being primarily for people with money to burn, and I think Valve has lost me on this entire endeavor. I kind of like the idea of the SteamOS as well, but again, it's kind of intrinsically linked to the idea of a Steam Machine and so that kind of fizzles for me too.

Only really care for the controller now, so I hope they at least sort the remaining issues out for that.

1. Is this source reliable? I have never heard of the site. Looking around the site it looks like an absurd joke. A few articles about guns, and somehow they land a major scoop? I call bullshit.

2. I still don't see a market for this. A quick look on the store showed 871 games vs 4330 for windows. What does Linux give a consumer outside of saving $50 on a Windows license?

I just think that Valve and its Steam Machines partners should consider something like the Razer Turret and Roccat Sova for these devices instead of the controller. Turret and Sova look like the best solution for easy Steam Machines/PC Couch gaming.

I hope they have a functional D-pad and buttons with the trackpads being a replacement for the analog sticks.

We really don't need 3 to 4 different 360° movement inputs and a crappy d-pad.

I've lost faith from most of what they've said or done since this idea was announced. Will be interesting to see how it goes but I certainly won't be there in its early life cycle.

I thought steam machines had been released anyway.

Honestly this is clearly what Valve should just stick in the box. I mean they should go for the original steam controller with some tweaks to the center buttons.

Rally don't need another controller with analog and dpad based movement controls.

I respect a controller without a dpad.
