SWD follows a smart, zeitgeisty recipe. Two parts Metroidvania, one part mining game, and a splash of roguelite platforming sensibilities. But rather than a cynical embracing of current trends, it then also manages to include something else: being brilliant.

About the Game
Described as an addictive hybrid of Super Metroid and Terraria, SteamWorld Dig is a platform mining adventure. Take the role of Rusty, a lone mining steambot, as he arrives at an old mining town in great need. Dig your way through the old earth, gaining riches while uncovering the ancient threat that lurks below...

After making a huge impact on the Nintendo 3DS eShop, we've decided to bring SteamWorld Dig to PC/Mac/Linux. Introducing HD graphics, achievements and more, the game has been optimized for Steam!

Key Features
A rich world of steam-driven robots, inspired by Steampunk and Western themes.
Explore an underground world full of secrets, treasure and terrors.
Uncover the remnants of human civilization, a degenerate race of dynamite-wielding troglodytes.
Randomized worlds with emergent gameplay.

Additions
Compared to the Nintendo 3DS version, this release has:
HD graphics: Beautiful, high-resolution (1080p) graphics.
Gamepad support: Keyboard, gamepad - play the game your way!
Achievements: Completionists rejoice!
Eye candy: Animated character portraits, bloom filter and more!
Trading cards: With a character set like this? Of course!

Excellent game! If you haven't played the 3DS version, buy it! With HD graphics, might just be worth it to double-dip.

I picked it up on 3DS but haven't had a chance to get to it yet. I might just double-dip and experience the definitive version day one.

Wow, thanks for putting up this thread! We're now two hours past launch on Steam, and we're typing away like crazy on Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and the Steam community page - plus we just uploaded a patched Windows version (didn't play to well with Windows XP). Look forward to what all have to say about our little game.

If you have technical issues, please post these in the Steam community forum rather than here on GAF, since there's so few of us. We'll stop by as often as we can to answer whatever we can here.

Now - game ON! Love y'all!

Whoa this game looks great. Never heard about it. May have to get it for my 3DS since I could use a game like this on there.

Please enjoy fellow gafferoonies, it's a cracker!

I'd get this now if it weren't for the Winter Sale >_< Unless it won't be discounted during then?

Gosh between this and FFVIII my bank account is not happy with me today. :c

I'd get this now if it weren't for the Winter Sale >_< Unless it won't be discounted during then?

Chances are it'll be the same percent off in the sale as it is now. Doesn't make any sense to drop your games price too much just two weeks after release.

Always wary of up-ports, you never how well the art will translate. This one looks nice, the HD makes everything pop nicely.

The trailer at 1080p did not look like it was upscaled at all. The visuals do look perfect, and you were correct to be wary.

Hats off to the dev team.

How long is the game?

How Long to Beat says 5-7 hours.

Any particular reason why this isn't on Vita?

Really small dev team.

It might actually even be too late to get your discount in to Valve. I know there was a deadline for submissions.

I've been sitting on a 3DS code forever and now I think I'd rather play on Steam, ha. Looks lovely.

Rock Paper Shotgun's WOT I think

Seems like John adored this title.

So in the end, when I look at it, the game really is about digging for jewels, selling them, then digging for more jewels. And yet it never, ever feels like that as IÂ’m playing. IÂ’ve finished the game twice now, once on 3DS, and now on PC, and both times IÂ’ve been absolutely hooked throughout. And itÂ’s thanks to the incredibly subtle cleverness behind the design. As the game goes on, even mining itself becomes a more elaborate task, requiring forethought and care to get to the tougher places, without cocking up your route. The layout isnÂ’t just blank sheets of rock to mine, but intricately crafted domains, as interesting as possible to explore.

Another design element that deserves celebration is how it very cleverly gets you to retrace earlier steps to pick up what you missed. You could do that at any time, but then the drive to keep moving forward is pretty strong. So when the game has you revisit a few specific challenge areas to reveal some surprises, along the way you re-explore places, now complete with a pile of extra skills. Everything is suddenly more accessible, and those places you messed up and couldnÂ’t climb back up are now reachable. This is a game that makes you wait an agonisingly long time for the precious double-jump, but once youÂ’ve got it, oh boy.

Great game! Recently picked it up for my 3DS and I've been loving the gameplay, aesthetic, and setting so far! Old West + Robots = GREAT!

Oh man, this just had to come after I've spent all my wallet monies! Welp, time to hit the 7 eleven around the corner. I don't think I want to wait til Christmas to see what's in my stocking. Looks like an awesome game, can't wait!

Looks like a solid port visually. How was the control migration for mouse/keyboard?

Controller is recommended, but M/KB controls are there and very solid apparently.

You cannot aim with the mouse to dig, game doesn't work like that, but they are completely rebindable.

Any particular reason why Spelunky isn't on 3DS? Come on man.

I don't know? This is the first time I heard of "SteamWorld Dig" and I think it looks pretty cool. I'm close to getting a Vita (again), specifically for indie games. So I thought I should ask before I buy it on Steam when I might as well wait for a Vita version. Lots of cool indie games are getting Vita ports these days.

One hour in and this game has a strangely soothing quality to it. Maybe it's just me diving straight into this coming off of Spelunky, but I've almost forgotten what it's like to fool around in caves without impending death lurking around every corner.

Thumbs up thus far, though I wish Steamworld Dig's resolution options weren't limited to full-screen and... not full-screen.

Here is an answer to the framebuffer questions

Keep the impressions coming.

Buy this game. The controls are some of the best and most responsive of the year. The game doesn't overstay its welcome and is really quite addictive.

In windowed mode you can drag the frame of the game window to whatever size you want and it scales accordingly.

This game was straight phenomenal, though I think the trailer reveals a lot more about the game than it should. But then again, if people think it's gonna be the same thing over and over then it may turn them off. Just saying as soon as I hit certain areas and the game kept going I had those small moments of "Oh snap!" when you see new stuff.

This game is a real treasure. Don't know if I'll double dip just yet, but it deserves a LOT of play and attention.

People who have played through the game will recognize areas that have already become embedded into their memory.
Someone like me will have forgotten those images as quickly as they passed as I have no context for them.

All of the potential spoilers of late-game areas and abilities I have already forgotten. I just remember the trailer being awesome.

I tried tweeting the devs, but I dont' think they're going to publicly answer -- does anyone know which storefront gives the devs a bigger cut of the sale?

I want to play this game and since it's essentially the same price on both, I'd like to try to give them as much as possible.

They aren't allowed to publicly discuss the agreement with Valve. Its been rumored to be around 30% cut for along time.

Assuredly, GMG gets a similar cut, but they throw most of theirs away in favor of competition and 20-25% coupons.

Can I ask what this game is then really? Seems intriguing and has some good word of mouth behind it, but what is it? =/

It's "Metroidvania" in the sense that you can upgrade your pick axe to dig faster, or break through tougher rocks. There's also other abilities.

That being said, unlike a proper Metroidvania, there's no real backtracking. You get the abilities to progress forward - you won't be using your stronger pick to break through rocks back at the start of the game.

It's not really like Terraria either - You're only digging blocks, not creating them.

It's a great game, though - very enjoyable on the 3DS. Here's Giant Bomb's quick look of it, although there's some more to it than what Brad shows.
