Streaming PC games to handheld devices

I've been looking into ways to stream my PC games to a handheld device as I'd like to quickly pick up and play through short sessions anywhere in my house.

As I understand the general opinion seems to be that the following setup should be ideal:

  • A 802.11ac Wi-Fi network

  • An Nvidia GameStream compatible PC to be able to use the Moonlight streaming application

  • An iOS/Andorid tablet or phone which supports 802.11ac and has H.265 hardware decoding.

  • A Bluetooth controller with a clip or some means to attach to a phone/tablet

Then there's also Remotr and GPD Win as alternatives. Not to mention the possibility of something like using RAINWAY on the Switch in the near future.

At present, what experiences have people had with various combination of devices and applications? Is 802.11ac significantly better than 802.11n across obstructions and large distances? Do Bluetooth connected controllers introduce noticeable input delays? Which combination strikes the right balance between performance and price?

No suggestions from anyone? I would be happy to even just get a recommendation on which tablet + controller combo would be best.

What is your budget ?
Do you own a phone or a tablet already ?
I have an ipad 2 and iphone 5 (would prefer something with a larger screen size than the phone). As for the budget, as I'm only looking to stream I'm not interested in something like the GPD Win but am willing to spend a few hundred if needed.

If you have a vita with henkaku you can stream your PC via moonlight
Oh cool didn't know this was possible. Vita's form factor and current price certainly makes it appealing but seems like I need to find one with firmware version 3.60. Don't think it supports 802.11ac or H.265 (how crucial is this really?) though.

I have no idea about PC streaming in particular, but 5GHz is the most important part imho. It's a good thing that ac only comes in that. My PS4 streams to Vita, PC and mobile are way more stable on 5Ghz versus 2.4GHz.

Blutooth delay really isn't that noticeable. If you can't feel any delay with Blutooth controllers (eg DS4), then it's a non-issue.

I use Moonlight to stream from my PC to my Nexus 6p. I use a DS4 with the Nyko game clip and a short USB cable. I tried Bluetooth but the ds4 doesn't seem to like to pair with my phone. I went with this setup since I already had a ds4 and my phone so this was less than a 20 dollar investment. Didn't want to spend too much on something that's really just a novelty.

I have AC wireless, it works pretty well for me. But I don't really have a reference point for other wifi protocols, since I only recently started using it.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with how well it works really, but honestly not sure how often I'd actually use it. I always feel like having my games on handheld would be cool, but then when I start doing it I just end up thinking it would just be better to play on my actual tv.

So what are some reasonably priced tablets to support 802.11ac? Best I've managed to find so far is the FNF Ifive Mini 4S but I'm not sure what a 1080P stream would look like on its screen given its resolution.

I guess I'll try one last time...

I'm looking for and am having real trouble finding a phone mount for controllers which support a width greater than 80mm (as phones with a 6'' screen size but smaller than 80 mm width tend to be very expensive). Anyone have any suggestions?

Alternatively, I'm not sure what (good quality) telescopic controllers are out there besides the iPega PG-9023 which can latch on to tablets.

Yes but I'm looking for something which allows me to attach the tablet/phone onto a controller. The shield portable is pretty much what I'm looking for but it's no longer available.

Nyko did make an attachment for DS4 and XB1 pad for devices up to 8 inch.

Okay, so I've been doing this.

It's a hell of a lot better than you think! A lot of action games are playable - not all, but many, including things like project cars.

Phone mount I would recommend (don't buy ipega):

^ buy that. I highly recommend it. Very strong suction connection, nice and soft where it touches the DS4. Has space in the back to charge/connect.

It works great and looks really good:

And get a microusb to microusb cable. A short one. Bluetooth connection can cause interference when streaming with some phones.

Btw I upgraded a router I was using JUST for streaming (literally no other connections and separate from my internet) from an oldass 2.4GHz which was dropping connection often (I think it was dying) to a 5GHz router - and the connection was more stable but the latency didn't halve or anything, it was less significant than I imagined, and the 5GHz router I bought was quite a good one. I wouldn't say it's essential. The framerate is more consistent but that might be because I switched devices too (vita doesn't support 5GHz).

I used Vita moonlight for a while, and while that was decent for Snake Pass and Yookalaylee, there was a bit more input lag than I would have liked. Fine for RPGs like Skies of Arcadia, but not great for action. I used my Samsung Edge 6+ and the latency dropped a lot more. I think it's because of the faster CPU.

Also, h.265 vs 2.64 = meh

Don't forget to download retroarch too.

I have a Linx Vision 8 (yes, it looks horrendous) which I bought on a deal for around €105.

Never made too much use of it, Steam in-home streaming worked wonderfully on it. Dark Souls 3 and Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed worked perfectly.

But recently I moved into a new house with my girlfriend and I've been making a LOT of use with it while she watches TV. The streaming once again works perfectly but I actually installed Final Fantasy VII locally on it from Steam and it works 100% so I've been pouring hours into that while she watches TV.

The Linx Vision 8 isn't a liked item that much and is considered budget, but god damn. I'm falling in love with it's uses. It's essentially just a Windows 10 tablet with a controller cradle.

I'd say the GPD Win is the most broadly compatible and flexible option, simply because it's x86. But if you're not interested in that I can't really recommend anything since I don't use the phone-based options.

Oh wow that's perfect! The suction cup overcomes the width constraints of other mounts I was looking at.

Thanks for your help everyone.
