Street Fighter 3 still worth picking up?

I play as Andore...

In fact, that I could select a character I liked, such as Hugo, and not be eventually turned off by their lack of balance, is quite rare. The parrying system really works to make the game a great deal more balanced than most fighters.

Some of the most intense (best) times I have had in a fighting game is when you have NO health left, and MUST parry everything coming at you. Those times are exciting.

I am somewhat changing my stance from previous arguments I've had.. but I dont think the balance necessarily comes from parrying. If you look, a lot of top players who use low tier wont even use parrying all that much. I think its just an over all balanced game to begin with. Most characters are just equipped with the tools to win a fight.

the more I play CVS2 the more I wish 3s didnt even really have parrying to begin with. I wish they had an alpha counter instead. Its just stupid sometimes to watch these parry fest fights where you know the players are just guessing willy nilly.

Pretty much. Parrying is just used when it's really obvious, like on the last hit of a blocked target combo, or when it's absolutely necessery, ie red parries.

Try it on MAME, if only for the online play. I think Xbox has an online one too, but the servers are empty

I don't know the legality of MAME though, though I think as long as you own an original copy it's fine.

That's like asking if Chrono Trigger or Super Mario Bros. is still worth picking up. 3rd Strike is easily one of the genre's best, if not the best.

I have both the DC and Xbox versions. Xbox version is great with the S controller and online was fun while people still played it. Plus it's a lot cheaper and easier to find than the DC version

My best Hugo comeback story was when I was playing online with someone from GAF, I forget. I'm Hugo, he's Dudley. Down a round and I'm down to my last 5% of health while he has a good 70%. He makes a mistake and I block a machine gun blow (5 quick punches followed by an uppercut). I red-parry the uppercut ONLINE and activate Gigas. Now he's down to 10-15%. He dashes into some hand claps, done. I win the next round. I wish I was recording it.

My addiction has faded, but 3rd Strike is still one of my favourite games of all time.

I'm fucking depressed and I don't know what to do. I want to play Third Strike so much, but I only have a (chipped) PS2 and I live in Europe... how do I play it, without actually buying an Xbox or a DC?

Get Street Fighter Anniversary Collection for XBOX 1. It has Street Fighter 3: 3rd strike with online play. I haven't been online for about a year now but I think there are still people going hard with it online. It was just added to the 360 backward compat list so I think that rekindled the interest in it.

what the hell when was this game made backwards compatible? i tried it like a week ago and it didnt work. time to play!

Its been BC for half a year now. But it has some bad slowdown problems so I usually just keep using my Xbox 1.
Yeah, Genei-Jin comboing is much harder thanks to the vertical scroll slowdowns.
My OG Xbox is running XBMC, so I don't have the luxury or playing it on that (lol XBL bans)

Chipped as in...you can play NTSC region games from either Japan or the US?

Import it! There are lots of copies floating around retail still.

Yeah I think I'll import it after all. What game contains Third Strike (US)? Is it the Anniversery edition?

Interesting--is Hugo a tough match-up, generally, for Dudley? I only ask because I always seem to do well against Dudley's online. My biggest comeback would be parrying Ken's flaming Shoryuken, one that was coming off his wake-up since I had knocked him down. I purposely baited it out by standing close to him and after that it was Gigas City. I think I was down to my last sliver IIRC and had to parry otherwise it was death.

Basically. I play in spurts now--I take time off to keep it fresh and it actually helps my game. Too much non-stop actually burns me out after a while and my timing starts slipping.

Why bother with the first two versions, 3S has almost all the same gameplay with more characters and tweaks.

+1. Absolutely NO point in playing the original or Second Impact with the existence of Third Strike. And no need for them, really.

The only arcade perfect or near arcade perfect ports of SF3 is the Japanese DC version, and the PS2 version. I'm not even entirely sure of the Japanese DC version.

What differences are there between the USA version of 3S and the Japanese version of 3S on Dreamcast? This is the first I've heard of this.

Also doesn't EVO use the PS2 version of 3S in the tournaments?

There's still plenty of people (relatively speaking) playing on the Xbox version though, mainly thanks to the excellent netcode.

Akuma is considered Hugo's toughest match up if the Akuma player is actually decent. He's always been good at runaway/keep away tactics and even though Hugo really just needs 7 mistakes to kill Akuma, getting in is the hard part. With Dudley, he needs to get in to do damage, which also works in Hugo's favor, so it's not that bad of a match up.

that looks way better than anything to do with SSF :HD

Animation > Resolution

See, while Third Strik is the infinitely better game, I do prefer New Generation or 2nd Impact in three key areas.

1. HUD

2. Backgrounds

Don't be fooled by all the wannabe fighter fans in this thread... especially Reno, everyone knows that Street Fighter 3 isn't worth anyones time.

I'm a huge Street Fighter fan and am yet to play SF III...

Is the DC version still competent? I'm a PAL user who doesn't have access to NTSC PS2 games or an Xbox, I don't mind it not being arcade perfect (Heck, I've spent more time on the Mega Drive/SNES versions of SF II' Turbo than the arcade version), I'm just very keen to try it out :)

It's perfectly fine. You won't notice any difference whatsoever.

Holy SHIT O_O

that was funnier than the Daigo one. It was just "GTFO"

YouTube's blocked at work, but can I take a guess, and assuming this is a vid of Hugo parrying Chun's first kick flurry of her SA, then immediately goes into Gigas?

Oh yeah, it's very balanced in all respects, but parrying is where the game really shines for me. With a huge character like Hugo, you are often at the mercy of the opponents fast attacks, or even a barrage of projectiles. With Hugo and parrying, it's relatively easy to move forwards, parrying everything that comes at you, and take no damage from it. His attacks and moves are still slow and cumbersome, but at least you don't have to worry about getting hit by EVERYTHING.

I also think when someone is down to no health but still fighting, the parry allows for much longer continued gameplay..... at it's most intense (playing as a character and staying alive for a time by only parrying and maybe even winning in that situation is a many times more enjoyable experience than the rest of the game for me.) It's this intensity that makes the Daigo video so awesome.

Playing with people that are good is how to play this though. The factoring of human reaction time and decision making compliments the fighting system REALLY well.
