Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is 15 years old today

this artist is great

Tekken 3 did the same thing with regards to a total roster shift the very same year as Street Fighter III New Generation, and became the most successful Tekken game ever, and best selling non-smash bros fighting game of all time.

Weak argument.

...what argument? Also, you have links for those? I'm a little shocked that Tekken 3 sold more than Tekken 2 or Tag.

Meh, 2nd impact had better hitboxes, less input lag that never changed randomly with the character, a better soundtrack instead of 5 second loops because of hardware limits, and faster. #S took too much time trying to look pretty and got hit for hit in too many areas.

I've gotten blasted at times for saying I enjoy 2nd impact more. I prefer the VAs, music and stages compared to 3rd strike. And OP sean is best sean.

Issue is too many characters got nerfed in third strike to the point where instead of trying to hit your opponent you had to take advantage of who could find the most glitched ht boxes the fastest.

Solid game. Good times. Not very good at it though! Might give it a bash over the weekend.

I really, really hope that Capcom could one day revisit this visual style in the future. SFIV has it's charms but it holds nothing compared to the SFIII line. Yes, yes, 2D is expensive but damn does it hold up well.

Still playing this game on PSN. I thought being "rank 0" would stick after the patch, but that seems to be bull because I'm now at rank 27. There are some rank 50 guys out there, that's a TON of matches.

Mains: Alex, Hugo, Q. Playing Ken recently cause all my mains have some horrible matchups.

And without the threat of parrying, those 3 would deep dick the slower, lower tier characters even harder. The game's too fast, close, and those 3-4 are way too broken without that threat.

I agree. Sure parrying makes the top tier scarier, but without parrying the low tier would have no chance. I can't imagine dealing with Chun without the ability to parry. Stop sign beats everything Alex has.

Whoever designed Chun's crouching hitbox deserves to be shot out of a cannon.

3S soundtrack was ahead of its time, I don't remember hearing liquid dnb and house in games.

3s hate mail is the best

Too bad capcom won't release this on steam and make it a compilation where you can pick which version of the char.

Too much effort

When I first played it, I didn't appreciate the cast as much. But now looking back, the cast is amazing in terms of design and gameplay.

I feel the same way.

The boredom that is SFIV made me look back to SFIII more fondly.

I can understand people preferring 2nd Impact over 3rd Strike (i do not agree absolutely but i understand it) but seriously? the VAs? Both New Generation and 2nd Impact have terribad VAs.

I sometimes fantasize about a 3rd Strike rebalancing patch. No frame data would be changed, nor hitboxes (as much as I would want to), because the game has been out for so long. Just damage values and meter building / super bar length. I'm not even sure I would change stun values, as really good players probably know if their combo into successful mixup will stun or not.

Get rid of Chun's super 2 extra stock, that goes without saying. She's most scary when she has super, so it'd be nice to remove the fear after she lands one. Doubling the size of Yun's super bar (while keeping its duration the same) would be priority #2.

Best presentation and soundtrack tied with ST imo.

Char select music gets me hype as fuck till this days. I love how the ken sprite dont have that '' quick flow '' because he's more old

What the hell is 3rd strike?

It's after a 2nd Impact. ;P

I think it's a weaker "SF game" due to parrying changing how the games are played a lot, but it's still one of my favorite games of all time and the presentation values/music/character cast are amazing.

Yeah, I'd only change the meter length; and really, the only ones that stand out are Chuns and Yuns. I'm pretty sure they still haven't patched Yun in re: to his command grab and no damage scaling.

In celebration...

Here are some "what if" HD sprites that pop up here from time to time

I loved 3rd Strike, was my favourite fighting game in the late 90's/early 2000's
(I prefer ST now)
. The art direction & sound direction is still top notch. Had lot's of fun times playing this game at Funland Arcade in downtown Toronto when I was a young teen, taught me a lot of fundamentals.

I dunno if it was already posted in here, but the announcer in 3rd Strike is actually a local rapper in Toronto named Infinite:

he's also rapping on the intro, character select & credits themes in 3rd Strike. he got quite a bit of play on Much Music back in the day, back when the channel actually showed music videos...

his music is pretty dope, check it out:

Agreed.

I'd want to do things like raise Chun's crouching hitbox, add recovery to Makoto's command grab, fix Q's EX slaps on crouching characters, give Hugo's anti-air super some invulnerability, but I wouldn't want to do anything to screw with people's 15 year old 3rd Strike memory.

Street Fighter not taking chances w/ its roster anymore? I can agree with that, but I don't see how you can say that for every other fighting game. In fact before SF3 I can't think of any fighter that completely changed its roster from one installment to the next.

The roster being mostly new people isn't what hurt SF3, it was a combination of many of the new chars not being the kind people expected, SFA2 and EX competing with it, and the fact it was a 2D fighter when 3D fighters were becoming the new hotness.

Dudley does stomp all over Balrog, tho.

Street Fighter II also did the whole cast reset thing, which is probably what inspired them to do it in SF3 also. Street Fighter 1 cast never gets any love ever since the SF2 cast replaced them =(

I'm glad a few of them got revived for SF Alpha & SF4

word

I was gonna make a thread for this! Honest! One of my fav. SFs, a little busy atm but I'll be back to do a quick write up on it if I don't get lazy.

rectify this immediately
Too hyped for Ultra at the moment :/ I might pick the recent-ish re-release on PS3, I guess.

I think what turned me off from the III series is the roster. Even in 3rd Strike, the roster simply doesn't click with me. I'd be willing to main Chun Li, but then I'm kind of a reverse tier-whore :P I'm ready to be shamed and discriminated for this statement, but I think even the EX series has more interesting rosters.

Everyone keeps posting that Ken vs. Chun match, but here's another quality match you scrubs need to appreciate:
EIN! ZWEI! DREI! ENDE!

While I wouldn't say it's the most balanced character gameplay wise it's still one of the fun fighting games I've played. Balancing it would make it even better.

I'm still sore about Sean's nerfing though =(

Second Impact while having stuff that 3S lacked...it still had the Chun, Yun and Kun trio.

I personally like all 3 SF3 games equally I guess they each have something I like be it gameplay or otherwise.

I used to be so into SF3 3S combo videos back in the day-
