stuck in a loop of black screen, "unable to connect to update server", black screen, etc

i quit the game back to dashboard. and then it got to all the way to title screen when i tried it again. failed to log into game server. now i'm back at the black screen, update server error loop

Mine actually starts on Sunday so for me the surprise "wedding gift" of actually being in the EU beta turned out to be an empty box so far (with an admittedly very pretty piece of wrapping paper - what a fantastic logo!)
