Damn shagg, I'd get some!
Sadly, I would get some too!
The problem is, it is finding someone who can supply official faceplates in bulk. That was the only setback initially. I found someone who was willing to sell me minimum 1000 faceplates in various colors for $5 each + shipping from china, but it was not an official faceplate and I didn't want to get into legal issues (I personally would love to get the official faceplate in bulk!). I also didn't like the communication gap on what he was promising, so it added to the hesitation.
The plan was that instead of going around and asking approvals for artwork and then making batches of that artwork and see if folks will buy it, I'd ask folks to submit their own artwork in accordance to the size and I'll print to. That way, I don't worry about receiving some C&D, and folks providing me artwork would vouch that they own the rights or have approval to rights. Yadda yadda, check mark the terms and services, and let me print. The advantage of getting approval for artwork is clean business and faster/cheaper mass produced printing, while the artist gets royalty for it. The disadvantage is lack of personal touch to the design. I prefer custom designs as I wouldn't want someone to pick between Apple and Oranges if they prefer Watermelon.
The overall cost per custom faceplate was:
Faceplate: $5
Shipping from china: $1
Packaging material: $1
Printing cost: $10-$25 (depending on the printing company).
Total: $17-$32 + shipping.
At average of minimum 1000 faceplates, this looks around $17K to $32K investment that I personally don't have in my pocket. Hell, I don't even know if I could find 1000 gamers willing to buy it, and I am afraid of people confusing my intentions as solicitation (which is bannable offense at GAF, and thats scarier than the investment itself lol). Gofundme would've worked too but again, I couldn't start anything until I had a supplier for the faceplates itself.
I've seen folks provide "custom faceplates" online, but their work is genuine crap and are some predetermined tribal or dollar bill or hearts designs, or some shit like that. Not only that but they require you to ship them your faceplate, which doesn't sound feasible in case you're fed up with the design. You can buy skins for this price, but I hate skins. I could buy my own printer, but that was around $75K which, again, is a big investment.

R: Finding a genuine faceplate supplier is impossible, unless someone here knows how to.
Oh well, thanks for the trip down the memory lane!
