Streets of Rage Remake is out

3 years in development, and now a complete version is out. It's not official (dur), but from what i hear it's far superior to Beats of Rage and is consistent with the SoR gameplay mechanics (selectable between 2 & 3). Enjoy guys -->

If you're seeing the beta version on the download page then clear your cache.

whats the point of a remake if the graphics arent overhauled? what exactly is being "remade"?

Why don't you, oh I don't know, try reading the link he posted.

i never liked the series until SoR2. I thought SoR1 was really bad and prefered Final Fight, even the butchered SNES version. but SoR2 kicked ASS.

I'm really liking it, but i'm getting problems with it. Whenever i pause the game, i can't exit the pause screen. Pressing esc does nothing and none of the action keys work. The only thing i can do is cycle between Continue and Exit.

Why do people keep saying this is a remake of SoR1? It looks like SoR2/3 to me. I don't see anything about 1's gameplay, backgrounds, bosses, special attacks...

edit:
Oh! I see Adam now. I hope they have the stages and bosses remade too!

There appears to be elements of all 3 streets of rage games, like the rir attack by the police and pepper bottle from part one, backgrounds look like part 2 mostly, this is pretty awesome was a bit skeptical at first.

Why haven't I heard about this before!? One of my favorite series gets a remake and I just find out about, I'm downloading this baby now! Sleep can wait.

As a fan I would have been interested, but they made a fatal mistake :

they changed the music. :\

Just out of curiosity, have you listened to the new music yet? Or are you just outright objecting to anybody remixing the tracks from the original game? (I haven't played it yet, though I downloaded it, so I can't comment one way or the other - I'm just curious where you're coming from here.)

No, I haven't listened to it, I admit. But even though I see the point of remaking the first one with some new features (I hope the new moves they added are from SoR2 and 3), I don't understand why they felt the urge to remix one of the best vg soundtracks ever.

Usually I hate remixes, not only vg music remixes btw.

So don't worry, maybe they are good remixes and you'll enjoy them. :)

Cool! Calling the police special (from SoR1) and better fire effects:

SoR1 version (left) remake version (right)... I don't like the shadows, and I miss the colored city lights, but the rest looks great:

Apparently, there are different modes of play too. Volleyball:

Seriously, the shadows are way weird. Many of the stages have the shadows as if there's a slightly reflective floor, or the walls behind are emanating light, when they obviously aren't. But yeah, it has 34+ songs in the soundtrack, and it looks like they added a LOT. Much more than they take credit for on the website. I'm impressed!

Nice post!

But it does leave me confused. I'm not a huge SoR fan so I can't pick everything out, so I don't really get this thread and remake. Is it newly touched-up and/or drawn graphics or is it like SoR1 with SoR3 graphics or what?

This is pretty freaking awesome, I've only played about 15 minutes so far but I'm really impressed with what these guys have done. I just wish they wouldn't of changed the music, that was one of my favorite video game soundtracks and the new music is not as good...

Has anyone tried the X360 pad with this? I'd rather use that then the keyboard. I'll try it later tonight I guess.

Downloading now. ****ing sad that Sega couldn't bring the series back themselves. But this sounds cool.

I guess a psp homebrew port would be asking too much.

Well, they combined all Streets of Rage games into one Super SoR. It looks like they wanted to make the ultimate SoR experience. They also made graphical improvements, and put in a lot of options to create the type of play you want (like SoR1 combos, or SoR3). The music remakes are actually decent quality. It kinda blew my mind, because that sort of thing is almost always bad, but it's still not near the originals. I just went into this expecting OC Remix stuff, much of which makes me physically ill.

By the way, I complained about the shadows in screenshots, but you can actually choose your shadow style in the options! SoR1, SoR2, or Remake version. They have two hidden characters as well. I never played through SoR3, because I felt like it was a piece of shit sequel just to get some extra cash. This remake has a motorcycle level that's kinda like a bonus stage, and it's fun for what it is. I don't know if that was just taken from 3 or what though. I'm on the 2nd stage, I think, but there are lots of sub-stages in each stage. I'm more impressed than ever. I just wish they had a vertical-sync option. I'm now into SoR like I haven't been since SoR2 was released.

Oh yeah, you can also use a music CD as a replacement soundtrack. I'd still like the original Genny tunes instead of the new arrangements. This thing is feature packed, and far exceeded my expectations from when I first read this thread. Usually, projects like this turn out to be such crap, and mostly unfinished crap at that. I commend these guys. Just please, give me some vertical sync!

I have a feeling this exceeds whatever Sega would bring out nowadays. I'd be thankful if this came out instead of a sequel.

Do you know if these are all new characters that they made or are they talking about Roo and Shiva?

I forget how to unlock Roo, but i know to get Shiva you had to hold down the B button right after beating him and keep it pressed until the next stage begun.

I bet you're right. I just know that in my browsing the forums, they were hush-hush about who the secret characters were (even though they showed screenshots with those characters you mentioned in them). They talked about how much of the secret character animation was completed, and withheld screenshots when mentioning them. Perhaps they meant how much was copied and pasted?

yeah, again, you're probably right. Ah well. I hated those characters. I hate SoR3 so much :(. Yet I love the first two immensely.

Let me just say this: WHOA

This is one of the best 'fan projects' I've ever played...it's seriously just like a real game, if Sega put this on the GBA and labeled it "Streets of Rage Generations" or "Streets of Rage: Anthology" I don't think I would have known the difference.

Here's the low down guys:

Basically it's Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3 remade with one graphical style (Streets of Rage 2/3) They take the gameplay elements of all three and mix them with the best of each game and really just made an awesome game.

It's Streets of Rage 1 - 2 - 3 so clever because they have all the levels combined with a *gasp* story that isn't tedious or distracting, it has alternate paths so you can play again and still find some levels you missed out on.

The music rocks too, they remixed it, and it sounds great...nothing cheesy, and the boss remix is hot as hell. Basically this game is seriously a free game of what Sega should have done on the GBA - I mean literally this feels like a polished Sega game...

I just listened to track 23, like a previous poster mentioned. :( I cannot agree that nothing is cheesy on this soundtrack.

It really does. I'd actually be IMPRESSED by Sega if they released this on GBA or DS. I'd certainly pay for it there. Sega should pay these guys to port a 360 version for Live Arcade.

If this were in Sega's hands to do for GBA, and this fan project didn't exist, it wouldn't have turned out this feature rich, and it wouldn't have been of this high quality.

Edit:
Whoa! I just found out what the AI selector is for! You can select the AI of your computer controlled co-op buddy. Haha the "materialistic" setting makes a lot more sense to me now. Agh, this totally needs to go on a handheld or console.

MMmm this is good stuff, but I'd advise against using a CPU AI buddy at all, as first I did, Zan decided to stay up at the top right walking into a wall and halt progress.

As for the guy having trouble with the Pause menu, to select anything you have to use whatever button you've got 'Start' assigned to.

Man, I sorta forgot how tough as nails SOR is without a buddy covering you XD. Just got my ass handed to me in the Park bit. I like that the remixes have kept that early 90's dance soundtrack style, complete with some old classic vocal samples "to another dimension!!" and so forth.

I've only seen one multiple path so far, that was in the bar. That was pretty nifty, but I want more now! Not a big fan of the cutscenes or some of the original artwork. The 'flash mx' style title screen is a bit naff and they've made Blaze look a tad too much ugly and hispanic in her new artwork.

But yeah, god damn. As a fan project this is amazing stuff, and almost a little scary considering the dedication involved in bringing it to fruition! Never doubt a fanatical fan community eh!

Also always got to enjoy the fact its the Sega fans these days making worthwhile Sega things, and not Sega themselves :lol

WTF?
SoR3(Actually Bare Knuckle 3 as that is the superior version) is the best SoR game in the series.

Downloading now of course, this remake sounds awesome.

Am I in another world or something, or is everyone wearing nostalgic headphones?

The reworked songs are MUCH improved. First of all, remixed shouldn't be used in this instance, as there is too many changes here for the most part. They took the original compositions and in most cases just played them note for note with updated sounds and instruments. I'd call it more of an "Enhanced" soundtrack. Listening to this would make it hard to go back to those old blips of the Genesis era SOR soundtrack.

As for the rest of the game, I wish online co-op was possible. The AI can be effective fighters but the basics like movement are dumb as hell. Also, I took off friendly damage, yet if I mistakenly grab my partner, I have to do an attack in order to let go, and they lose life!! Or the same happens to me!

Otherwise, besides wishing there were some more moves from SOR3 (like the individual weapon moves) this is pretty damn good. Now I gotta get a decent controller to play this with.

BAH, THIS IS FOR PC?

Well crap, I was hoping for some Xbox emulator goodness, now I have to hook up the crummy wired controllers.

Just got through playing the first level and a half or so. Awesome, awesome stuff. Probably the thing that impressed me the most was how well they managed to capture the feel of the originals, gameplay-wise - I've played I don't know how many commercial remakes of games that missed the mark on that, but these guys nailed it perfectly. The music remixes are actually pretty good - they did a nice job of preserving the feel of the original compositions while improving the fidelity. (And they're all a damn sight better than any of the tracks Yuzo tried to pass off as 'music' in SOR3. >_< )

If you liked the originals at all, this is a helluva New Year's present. You pretty much owe it to yourselves to try this.

Nope not liking it so far.

I played through the first couple stages on normal difficulty and eugh...frustrating.

Annoyances
-Jet pack guys are way more trouble than they're worth. They're hard to hit and they're missing their grab & drop throw.
-Timers don't reset after a set number of encounters. In the elevator section in stage 2 I ran out of time...I mean wtf?
-The super system from SoR3/BK3 isn't in. I kind of liked having the little charging meter that when full lets you use a super without using up life.
-No individual weapon moves, also weapons are unbreakable. Cmon that just throws off the balance.
-Enemies do way too much damage.
-The burning bar section in stage 1 is a mess. Too much fire everywhere and it doesn't help that the enemies walk through it with no trouble.
-When you grab an enemy if you do two grab hits then the third comes out automatically no matter what button you press. That means you can't do two hits, then flip over the guy and throw them, etc.
-One of the new enemies I noticed(looks sort of like Axel with a haircut) is overpowered. Breaks through combos, takes huge chunks of health away, might want to check into it.
-Still a number of bugs like the aforementioned pause screen one.
-Ripped sprites from other beatemups cheapens the experience(the jewels that some enemies drop, the blood effects from using the gun/knife/sword/???)

Don't get me wrong it's a good remake and it is polished as all hell, but hopefully the official release covers these issues.

Went through the forums and read about users experiencing similar issues.

Wow. For one, this is the official release. This is for FREE, buddy. People did this as a hobby. And yet you put a positive slant on Sonic 360 a month or so ago. I think youre nitpicking way to much on a fan project, seemingly expecting it to be the most balanced and incredible franchise revival in the history of all mankind.

Pretty good, but it can't replace SOR II for me. I dunno, it plays more like SOR3 which IMO is inferior gameplay wise.

Yeah I know it's free. Believe me I've tested another fan-made games where authors actually expected to be paid for the game, and they were much worse than this. I'm nitpicking because I'm a huge SoR nut and things like the bugs/grievances I mentioned in my last post grate on me much worse than you'd imagine.

It's a great remake and I'm just listing my annoyances. Sorry if that bothers you. Oh and if you want to troll my opinion properly I think I've listed tons of games I like that are better ammunition than Sonic 360.

Played the first level and all I can say is it kicks ass, takes me back to the good ol' days of gaming.

Any other sites with these classic remakes? anotherworld, flashback, golden axe 2.

Why can't I hit enemies behind me when playing as Max using the lead pipe? Some kind of setting I have to change?
That was one of the cool things with using Max in SoR2 I thought.

I can't seem to do back attacks in this, like blaze's leg sweep and axel's elbow etc, but I am realy liking it so far.

I lost on stage 4 against Nail, not bad imo for a first run, can't get my joypad to fully work though (360 usb pad)

*edit* Boss music is a great remix!

Wow, looks really impressive. Like what they've done with the graphics... but I'd need to hear the new music myself. Downloading.

Wow this is a pretty cool remake , I played through the first couple levels .. I didnt think i'd like the remade music but its actually impressive and its nice that they kept the original feel of the gameplay. A friend and I used to play the originals all the time, Big thumbs up here :)

I didnt encounter any bugs (yet) but the game doesnt like being alt-tabbed out , It wouldnt let me back in , Had to End Task.
