i remember my filipino friend saying over there they treat lighter skin filipinos better because the lighter skin is seen as a sign of wealth and the darker skin is more for the poor/laborers
Go to 4chan, dude. /int/ is one of the more worthwhile boards, but every day you'll find edgy European kids saying how Greeks/Turks/Spaniards are "shitskins".
Also the majority of Hispanic Americans have some Amerindian heritage. But as this study shows, those with less are viewed more positively by Anglos. A Hispanic person of entirely European descent will have very different life experiences than somebody without.
Do you really think both of these Hispanic girls will be treated the same by Anglos?
Yep. Literally every person of color already knows this and this "lighter = better" mentality isn't only present amongst Caucasians but also minorities as well all over the world (Hurray for internalized racism)!

makes me want to darken my skin even more!
That is silly. Spanish people are absolutely Hispanic, but sometimes people use the label to only mean Latin Americans.
Many white Hispanic people have probably experienced being told that they aren't really Hispanic by Anglos or by non-white Hispanic people.

It's the same in Taiwan/China. Darker skin = tanned = working in the fields = poor/low class. That is why you see many asian women walking around in the summer with umbrellas. My mother nearly faints when she sees other Americans sun tanning and thinks they're crazy loli remember my filipino friend saying over there they treat lighter skin filipinos better because the lighter skin is seen as a sign of wealth and the darker skin is more for the poor/laborers

Isn't this a big issue in south and Central America? Like you won't see any darker skinned latinos on screen despite they make up a good bit of the population.
Kids films not helping either

Hispanic last name, Hebrew first name. I sometimes wonder how fucked I might be.You know, I've been voluntarily self-identifying in all of my job applications.
What the hell have I been thinking? Better to let them guess, since I don't have an "ethnic" sounding name.
are people from Catalan, Galicia and Basque country considered Hispanic too?
I find that kind of odd because the gist that i get is that Hispanic is an over-general term for native Spanish speakers.
If Catalan speakers are born in Catalunya, Spain.... are they Hispanic? i think not.

whats wrong with this?
whats wrong with this?
Lots of Hispanic people look like this.
Who cares what white people think fuck white supremacy.
It even works among white people. We've been conditioned to think darker and/or more tanned skin is a part of unqualified people who worked in the fields. Couple that with deep seated racial prejudices and you got yourself a terrible coctail.
Any country in Central America, I bet not even 20% of the population look like that. Some Cameron Diaz thing going on.

I am curious about the lighter skin phenomena that's been happening for thousands of years even before the Western Caucasian bias came into play.
Wonder if their been like a reason for that. Why lighter=better
Don't think it matters really personally, but she doesn't look like a hispanic women to me.
Most of my family members from my dad's side of the family looks like that.

I suspect we humans have an underlying biological bias against darker skin. Wonder if there is any research into the matter...Rich people don't work in the sun.
I always thought that Hispanic people were people from Hispania, which is Spain. I've never understood why spanish-speaking people from the continent of America are considered Hispanic.

Because they speak Spanish and their European heritage was traditionally valued over their Amerindian heritage by the West.
It's the same reason that Americans, who are mostly not ethnically English, are considered Anglos.

Yes but they are Anglicized.
true dat, many people from different parts of the world migrated to the Americas, one of Peru's former head of state was of Japanese decent, two Chilean heads of states were of French decent, in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina have lots of Italian and German decents. You got Mexicans of Lebanese decentExactly. Many Hispanic people are not mostly Spanish in ancestry, just as most Americans are not predominately English in ancestry.
