i remember my filipino friend saying over there they treat lighter skin filipinos better because the lighter skin is seen as a sign of wealth and the darker skin is more for the poor/laborers

Go to 4chan, dude. /int/ is one of the more worthwhile boards, but every day you'll find edgy European kids saying how Greeks/Turks/Spaniards are "shitskins".

Also the majority of Hispanic Americans have some Amerindian heritage. But as this study shows, those with less are viewed more positively by Anglos. A Hispanic person of entirely European descent will have very different life experiences than somebody without.

Do you really think both of these Hispanic girls will be treated the same by Anglos?

The girl on the right isnt black tho.

This is true. Come to think of it, I can't remember when was the last time that Miss Philippines wasn't light-skinned.

That is silly. Spanish people are absolutely Hispanic, but sometimes people use the label to only mean Latin Americans.

Many white Hispanic people have probably experienced being told that they aren't really Hispanic by Anglos or by non-white Hispanic people.

are people from Catalan, Galicia and Basque country considered Hispanic too?

I find that kind of odd because the gist that i get is that Hispanic is an over-general term for native Spanish speakers.

If Catalan speakers are born in Catalunya, Spain.... are they Hispanic? i think not.

It's the same in Taiwan/China. Darker skin = tanned = working in the fields = poor/low class. That is why you see many asian women walking around in the summer with umbrellas. My mother nearly faints when she sees other Americans sun tanning and thinks they're crazy lol

I'd like to be able to say they got this from the Spaniards, because that was how they ran Central and South America via interbreeding, but it exists in other parts of Asia that had nothing to do with the Spaniards.

Isn't this a big issue in south and Central America? Like you won't see any darker skinned latinos on screen despite they make up a good bit of the population.

Yeah it's pretty apparent especially if you see City of God or City of Men its something you can pick up on if you pay attention.

Kids films not helping either

I don't think it's just white people that feel this way.

You know, I've been voluntarily self-identifying in all of my job applications.

What the hell have I been thinking? Better to let them guess, since I don't have an "ethnic" sounding name.
Hispanic last name, Hebrew first name. I sometimes wonder how fucked I might be.

My friend is half Catalan and he got a Hispanic scholarship, so I guess so.

Lots of Hispanic people look like this, although I agree that it's a little offensive to make the scientist very white. We need more darker Hispanic characters in roles like that.

whats wrong with this?

The same rationale that people have with the other Disney Princess recently.

People are right, there are plenty of lighter skinned Hispanics. The issue then comes in where intended demographics still can't connect. You can put forth a character intending it to be inclusive and still miss large groups of people. Hispanic demographic is as large and varied as any other, some people simply won't be able to connect to a light skinned individual. There's nothing wrong with that, it just is. Most likely why they added this one.

just to be clear, since there are divergences on the definition of the term.

is it based on mother tongue? native language spoken? ancestry?

it cannot be about race since it is a mosaic and melting pot of varieties across the Americas.

It even works among white people. We've been conditioned to think darker and/or more tanned skin is a part of unqualified people who worked in the fields. Couple that with deep seated racial prejudices and you got yourself a terrible coctail.

I heard this on game of thrones.

Any country in Central America, I bet not even 20% of the population look like that. Some Cameron Diaz thing going on.

Absolutely. But what percentage of Hispanic people are Central American? I doubt more than a quarter.

In Spain or even some former Spanish colonies, people who look like that aren't unheard-of.

Yep, its always funny when I tell white people where im from:
1. But your english is so good!
2. You dont act latino at all!
3. Do you know Shakira?
4. Do you have swimming pools overthere?

Lol no idea she was hispanic, so much bs.

I am curious about the lighter skin phenomena that's been happening for thousands of years even before the Western Caucasian bias came into play.

Wonder if their been like a reason for that. Why lighter=better

Cleopatra would bath in milk to bleach her skin, this trend has been going even in BC old timey times

Rich people don't work in the sun.

Haha my sister took a family photo with her husband's family who are from Italian descent, while my sister who's mexican descent had the most noticeable lightest skin in the picture, she really stood out.

I always thought that Hispanic people were people from Hispania, which is Spain. I've never understood why spanish-speaking people from the continent of America are considered Hispanic.

Because they speak Spanish and their European heritage was traditionally valued over their Amerindian heritage by the West.

It's the same reason that Americans, who are mostly not ethnically English, are considered Anglos.

Field workers, or those of a lower class, have historically had darker skin because they labored under the sun day in & day out. The upper class of course, had no reason to be working under those conditions for hours, so they maintained a lighter complexion. As a result, darker skin became synonymous with "lower class" or "peasant."

uh what? Americans' largest ancestral background is actually German

Yes but they are Anglicized.

more like Americanized since Anglicized means your are in cahoots with the Red Coats or a Loyalists

Exactly. Many Hispanic people are not mostly Spanish in ancestry, just as most Americans are not predominately English in ancestry.
true dat, many people from different parts of the world migrated to the Americas, one of Peru's former head of state was of Japanese decent, two Chilean heads of states were of French decent, in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina have lots of Italian and German decents. You got Mexicans of Lebanese decent
